Requests / A Word About the Request Forum
April 16, 2010, 09:57:51 AM
Ok another annoucement. This is pretty much an extended description.

This is more or less a suggestion forum. Concepts and designs can be discussed and eventually be made (such as having cloud city hallways to connect to each other), but don't expect someone to always step up and make the map, especially if it requires a large amount of new assets to be created.

Furthermore, mods take a large amount of time to be created, tested, and refined to the best of the modder's ability. If a fellow modder is interested in your request, please give them your respect and allow them to work on their own schedule.

The request forum can also be used to request certain assets or certain maps/mods to be found. Remember to ALWAYS use the search function first.

I'll keep this topic unlocked for discussion.

Other Games / Hardest Game You've Ever Played?
April 10, 2010, 09:30:59 AM
Thought I might get an interesting discussion going on! What is the HARDEST game(s) you've EVER played. Does matter how old it is or what genre it is. If the game was hard to beat, feel free to tell us!

After giving it much thought, the hardest game I've ever played is Ninja Gaiden for the NES. That game was just punishing.

The title says it all. Right now I'm in the Apple Store getting it repaired. Meanwhile, this MacBook Pro's pretty sweet.

I won't be able to access MPC for the time being. Don't screw up around here while I'm gone. :P

SWBF1 Modding / Announcement: Read Me Before Posting
March 31, 2010, 07:27:48 PM
Due to an increase in activity in the SWBF modding forum, it is in need of organization. To help us help you, please follow these simple guidelines:

- Please add [HELP] to the beginning of the title of the topic that you need help in.
Once a question is resolved, pleased change [HELP] to [SOLVED].
A moderator or admin will lock the topic as well. If you have further questions about a locked topic, please make a new one.

- Please add [WIP] if you are posting about a topic about a Work In Progress mod.
Here's a recommended format to post in your release topic: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=2018.0

Documentation (mostly sourced from GameToast) will be stickied soon.
Frequently Asked Questions will be answered upon request for the time being.

It appears our modders are either inactive on the site or are not able to contribute at this time.
This forum right now is a complete mess with half-answered questions everywhere and it needs a little bit of organization.

With that said, I am helping as much as I can around the modding forum.
If you are a modder/know valuable information, it would be greatly appreciated if you can help out.
Just like any other place in SWBFGamers, we have the right to edit, delete, merge, lock, or do anything else to your topics with or without reason.

Tech Support / Need info?
March 29, 2010, 05:13:49 PM
Hello MPC Members,

If there is something that you want to know about...
GOOGLE IT FIRST.

Please do not waste our time with questions about the things you can learn yourself if you just search it up. It has become an issue because this section is called "Technical Support", not, "Computer Trivia".

If you want to know what a video card is, google it first.
If you want to know if there's going to be a mac version of a game, google it first.
If you want to know how good a video card is, google it first (that's what video card reviews are for).

If you want to know why you cannot connect your console to the internet, post in this forum.
If you want to know why ZeroEditor isn't working, post in this forum.
If you want to find out something and you can't seem to find it after searching, post it in this forum.

Update:
Use another search engine if google is "blocked".

Tech Support / Making batch commands in Terminal
March 14, 2010, 10:38:02 PM
For some reason, I shall post this quick tutorial for the people who are interested.

As most Windows users know, you can batch commands and save it as a batch file. It's as easy as writing them in notepad and then save it was the .bat extention. For Mac users, it's almost the same thing, however this is a bit more work involved in this process. Here's an example:

Ok so I use the Mac version of MAME. It's a multi-arcade emulator (it runs practically every arcade game known to man) that has been ported to OSX, however there has never been a working front-end (an interface) for me Only the bare minimum files. The only way I've been able to run it is if I go to Terminal and type in the following:
cd /Applications/mame/
*Press Enter*
./mame
*Press Enter*

I love simplicity so I don't want to manually type that in every single time. I'd rather double click something so that I go right into a game.

Here's how to I would make a "batch" command of that so that it will be easier.

Open up TextEdit, type in your commands. Keep different commands separated. So in text edit I would simply type it in:

cd /Applications/mame/
./mame

After that, save it without any file extention to the main directory (Macintosh HD). To do this, delete it from the Get Info Panel if you right click the file and open "Get Info"

From there, open up Terminal and type in:

chmod 777 /mame

This will convert it to something you can execute (double click to open). With that said, you're done! With the example shown here, I can now do two commands by opening this new file, like any other app. While this may be useless for most (most won't even get what I just did) it can be proven useful to others.

Other Games / Steam OSX Information Topic
March 08, 2010, 08:54:07 PM
To prevent clutter and frequently asked questions that has been confirmed, I will now sum up everything I know into one topic and I will continue to contribute to it until Steam gets an official release. mkay?

Is it true?
YES, Steam is indeed confirmed for Mac OSX by Valve themselves.

Will all games/tools that are currently in Steam supported?
NO, Games that are confirmed at launch are all major Source-based games by Valve, their SDK, and Dedicated Server software. 3rd party games are confirmed to be distributed through steam at launch however ONLY WORLD OF GOO only Tripwire's Killing Floor and Red Orchestra is confirmed at this time.

UPDATE: Only Portal was playable in the beta. In the video he added a non-steam shortcut so that he can use the the steam in-game overlay.

Which games are Source games?

The only games that are confirmed as of right now are:

  • Counter Strike Source
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Portal series
  • Half Life 2 series
  • Left 4 Dead series

Games that should make it but NOT confirmed are:

  • Day of Defeat: Source
  • 3rd Party Mods and Source Games

Valves Games that weren't mentioned AT ALL were:

  • All GoldSrc Games (Half Life, Counter-Strike 1.6, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress Classic, etc)

Is this a Wine Port/an Emulator or is this a native port of their games?
No, Valve went to do a native port of their games. Seeing how its origins are in the Quake Engine which is also natively ported, I'm not surprised.

When will it be available?
Sometime in April. That is all we know. Valve has specified May 12th. Hopefully Valve Time won't go into effect here. (Seriously AG; you had time to post that reply but none to update this? -Red) (Shaddup, this is mah topic. :P --AG)

Will we have to buy our games again?
Only the confirmed Source Games are confirmed to be available if previously purchased.

How's the performance? The visual quality? The stability? The system specs?
NONE of that information is released yet so don't ask.
The only information we can get is by studying this leaked video showing off the beta version of Mac Steam:
Steam for Mac is leaked !

UPDATE: I've tried out the Mac beta myself (No, I will not provide a download link for anyone. Don't bother asking.) From what I've tested, it looks and functions exactly like the PC version of Steam, which is also usable in Crossover Games BETA 9. The only difference I've found so far is obviously the top bar. Overall it's very stable.

The only game I found available in the beta is the Mac version of Portal. Everything seems to function fine, however I did get a performance drop that I wouldn't usually get if I cranked up the video settings. It most likely has to do with the crappiness of OpenGL/the over 9000 background apps running but overall, this is an above average port that would definitely satisfy Mac owners.

Is there cross-platform play?

Only Source games are confirmed at this time to have cross-platform play.
Steam has named this Steam Play.

Does Steam Cloud correspond to the Mac versions of Source Games?
Yes.

Are you sure this Topic is 100% Accurate?

No. This is a topic upon software which has not been released yet. We are simply compiling all the information that we know about it right now. Therefore, facts change and new information comes overtime.

Tech Support / Mac and PC Screen Recording
March 02, 2010, 04:42:37 PM
Note: This is a WIP. Compared to my other WIPs, this is one that I will actually bother to finish.

Now that I have announced that I will be uploading anyone's videos into the MPCGamers account (after screening, of course) I think it's a good time to add some documentation on the site regarding screen recording software.

------------------
Basic Stuff:
LIEK OMG WATS DAT?!?!??!!?
Screen recording software is exactly what it sounds. It allows you to record the actions on your screen, allowing you to save it as a movie format. From there you can show it to your friends, upload it, do whatever you want.

OMG DAT'S SOOOOO COOOL!!!!11!1!! IS IT LIKE FREEE????
Yes and No.
Most screen recording software is shareware, meaning that you would have to buy it from the developer in order to fully use it. Most free/less restricted software usually sucks, giving you a terrible capture and terrible performance. Despite this, there are some alternatives that do work! I'll will go over them in this topic.

------------------

For PC Users:
The BEST screen recording application currently is Fraps. It allows you to capture your gaming videos with small memory consumption and excellent quality.
Example here:
The downside is that it isn't free, and the demo contains a 30 second limit and an annoying watermark.

Now if you can't fork out the extra cash, I'd suggest that you use the built-in video recorder in xfire. While the quality isn't as great as Fraps, the performance in games doesn't drop as much so it's still usable. A nice feature is to upload videos directly into your xfire account.
Example here: *Coming Soon*
This is a free alternative that you should definitely use if you can't get a copy of Fraps.

------------------

For Mac Users:
The BEST screen recording application for Mac is Screenflow. It gives you excellent capture quality and takes up a small amount of memory. The downside is that it isn't free, or anywhere near free. Screenflow is $100, but it comes with a built-in video editor and plenty of exporting options. More on that later.
Example here:

As of now, there is no free alternative that I am aware of that's capable of capturing gameplay.
------------------

To-Do List:
- Finish up parts in both the Mac and PC setion
- Download Links
- Comparisons of File types
- Choosing the correct quality options
- HD video information
- Other stuff I forgot/haven't done

Other Games / Steam OSX References
February 23, 2010, 10:42:40 PM
This is 100% no BS, the new UI for steam (see new blog post) currently has icons and other files that are referenced for OSX. This is a huge hint towards native Mac Support of Steam!

In fact, there's a lot of speculation already on the Steam forums. Now all you Mac users may hopefully get the chance to enjoy Team Fortress 2!

Steam Thread:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1157656

Discuss. What are your opinions on Steam for OSX?

Now this is an interesting one! What we have ourselves here is Star Wars: Battlefront Online. Seeing how SWBFIII is pretty much dead, this could be the reboot that the series needs (Rebellion needs to die).
Quote
According to Kotaku's sources, LucasArts is currently working with Slant Six Games (SOCOM Confrontation, the upcoming SOCOM Fire Team Bravo 3) on a Battlefront Online title. Reported to be in pre-production, the title would online only, and would hit shelves in 2011.

While it's still a rumor (and still in pre-production), this is very great news. A SWBF game that DEVELOPED for online play. Let's hope this becomes a reality.

EDIT:

and also, please move this topic to the SWBF section, I accidentally posted it in the Tourney section.

Tech Support / BSOD D:
January 18, 2010, 11:47:35 AM
Windows XP decided to give me the BSOD on startup and I really need to recover some homework there. I lack experience in these fatal error messages so I'm asking MPC what should I do.

- Reformat and do 3 hrs of typing all over again
OR
- Spend the whole day trying to find why I have a registry error

The plus side to reformating is a chance to finally install Win7 but then again I really need to access my HD partition to recover HW.

Can anyone help? :'(

Tech Support / Regarding Mac DVD Emulation
January 04, 2010, 08:28:39 PM
Jazz asked Red if he can play games without the DVD in the drive. Red says it is illegal and locks the topic. I'm too lazy to quote the topic so I'll just link to it.
http://www.mpcgamers.com/smf/index.php?topic=1511.msg17927#msg17927

I'd like to correct Red, playing the game without the disk legally is possible. However, he is correct that it is illegal to send any images of games to anyone else and that you are entitled to make a backup copy for your own purposes.

Now you ask, how is this possible? With Toast Titanium (it's pretty cheap now, buy a copy ASAP), it's very easy!
A while back I posted a VERY easy to follow tutorial here: http://www.mpcgamers.com/smf/index.php?topic=662.0

Once you've made a backup copy of all of the games you have desired, all you have to do to right click them and click on the words "Mount It". Once that is done, the computer will think the DMG file you have is an actual DVD in your drive. The game won't know the difference so you'll be able to enjoy it without having to fumble with all of your disks.

The only disadvantage of DVD emulation is that it's Hard Drive Space consuming. If you have the space to spare, you should be fine.

SWBF1 Modding / Mac SWBF Modding Information
November 23, 2009, 05:21:10 AM
Another information post to the rescue! Why was this made? People ask the same questions over and over! Ok, let's get to it.

Modding on OSX is possible, however limited. You see, the original Software Development Kit was for Windows ONLY. It's complete with a map editor and original assets used to make the original maps and factions.

Despite this, you could still edit factions (it's called SIDES in SWBF) on your Mac!

Now you ask yourself, "If these tools were for Windows, how is that possible?" Fear not! Download the SDK right now. They were kind enough to make it a .zip file instead of an installer.

Look at the screenshot:
http://img136.imageshack.us/i/mst1.png

We're not going to use most of the stuff there. Go to BFBuilder/Assests/Sides. You will see this:
http://img4.imageshack.us/i/mst2.png

Imageshack killed my images. Too bad...
Here's a rundown which side is which (Taken from Gametoast):

ALL = Rebel Allience
CIS = Separatists
DES = Desert Creatures (Like Jawas and Tuskins)
EWK = Ewoks
GAR = Jabba's Pigs (Garmelions or something like that, not sure how it is spelt)
GEO = Geonosions
GUN = Gungans
IMP = Imperial Empire
REP = Republic
SNW = something snow I think not sure what though
WOK = Wookies

Tutorials for editing factions are all over Gametoast and MPCGamers. I wrote (an incomplete) one on ODF Files. Pi made one about LUA files. Ask around for help! You'll see how certain files work.

Now you ask, how am I going to get these files to .lvl files so I play them? Well, unfortunately, it's currently impossible to compile (SWBF calls it munge) files directly in OSX. You have the following options:

- Use x86 (Windows) emulator such as VMware or Parallels
- For PPC users, use Virtual PC (I'm not linking it because it is incredibly old)
- Use the closest PC available
- Upload the whole ALL folder (or at least the files you edited) for a PC modder to munge for you. There are several people including myself who will gladly do that for you.

That's pretty much the basic rundown of Mac Modding. Feel free to ask any questions you have in this forum.
