Star Wars Episode X is to be written by Simon Kinberg of X-Men: The Last Stand, Fan4stic and Dark Phoenix fame, and directed by Jon Watts.

I wonder what the George Lucas sequel trilogy would have looked like if chose to do that instead of his museum.

He has spoken on some of what his Sequel Trilogy would have entailed:

-A 14-year-old female was to be the lead character. Rey was the evolution of this idea. It would also have focused on the Skywalker grandchildren, who would be in their 20s.
-The New Republic tries to establish itself from the ashes of the Empire. The Empire's defeat left a vacuum - one that the crime syndicates are trying to fill. Remnants of the Empire would still exist as holdouts on certain planets but there would be no 'great rebirth' of it. George compared it to the aftermath of the Iraw War.
-The crime syndicates would have been led by an elderly Maul, who has taken an apprentice in Darth Talon.
-We were to learn of the Whills.
-Han and Leia's son would be enticed to the Dark Side by Darth Talon.
-Luke would exist in exile, having become bitter and in a dark state of mind. The female protagonist seeks him out and he eventually agrees to train her, slowly coming back to himself. He would also rebuild much of the Jedi Order by seeking out Order 66 surviviors, before dying in Episode IX. Some elements of this survived in Luke's arc in The Last Jedi.
-Leia would become Chancellor of the Republic by the end and would bring peace to the galaxy - this would also reveal that it was not Anakin who was the Chosen One, it was Leia.
