I may be stupid for this.. But I just need some clarification on the process of how you change Unit and Weapon names (as they show up on the spawn screen). Either an explanation of a link to a tutorial would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This tool is capable of rebuilding core.lvl http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=307 (http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=307) Then a nice tutorial to help you on your way http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=908.0 (http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=908.0).
Is it possible by side.lvl modification?

No. The names are stored in core.lvl . The reason is that different languages use different spellings/names, and this way the game is language neutral, and the language changes are stored in core.lvl only (this is called language localization).
Isnt there a way by editing ODF?

Not really the most you could do is call on another weapon predefined in the core localization
Unfortunately there are no 100% complete core.lvl builders yet but I'm working on one with complete loc

lol yeah i tried looking for something to do in ODF, but with no luck.
Thanks for the clarification though guys.
Well, I guess you sort of could do it using ODF,
When you don't localize (or have something wrong with core.lvl)
Pretend your gun's ODF is named Awesome Handgun.odf
Ingame, my weapon is called whatever the ODF is (when it is not localized).
So in a way, you could do it with ODF files.
(But who would want to miss out on the opportunity to learn Core.lvl modding, right?)
Ya i tried and it doesnt change.
Works for me...

No, the name would end up being 0x or something like that, not the ODF name.
see the second screen shot here, the first unit on the spawn select screen:
