Ive looking around on google and havent found anything that would help. Currently I connect to the internet through a 2wire modem/router w/ wireless. That sits in a room abover the basesment. My new computer (which is in the basement) isnt compatible with the usb adapter that came with so Ive been using a wireless usb adapter I picked up at Best Buy. It works for browsing the internet but for games like garry's mod it cant hold a stable connection. I was wondering if I could use the old router or modem I used to use to help me get a wired connection working.
yes, but if you wish to use your WLAN you can always get a proper NIC card for you computer. That may help with your connection.
As far as my experiences go, ethernet connections have always been faster than any other connect. If you switch modems I believe you need to contact your ISP.
I kind of figured the modem wouldn't do me any good but I mentioned that I had it just in case anyone knew a way I could use it to help.
Oops, sorry about that link. I didn't know you were asking about switching modems. If you are losing a connection for gaming it is likely your router is the issue, maybe a weak signal. I know it seems unlikely but signals could be interrupted by interference, even at short distances. Try and make sure microwaves, cordless phones, and other interference is out of the way of you and your router.
If it's at all possible, ethernet is the way to go for gaming connections. Just pick up a long cable and run it through the house if you can't drill to the computer.
If that's not an option, then you should pick up a PCI card. I use one for my gaming computer (some belkin pre-n one). I have the same router as you do. It's never dropped a connection and has pretty low latency (unnoticeable really), although I'm not in a basement so I don't know how well it would work through there.
If I could Id run that ethernet cable in a heartbeat but my mom has this thing about exposed wires. It seems like if you go below the router then the signal just gets owned. Ive been trying a few things. Really wish the usb adapter would have just worked.
