SWBF2 Modding / the meaning of SFX

I tryed to open some files from BF2 with a hex editor because i can not use modtools,well when i read something like sfx_laser_red for example i don't understand what sfx stand for ,it mean special effect?Or sound effect?

I accidentally deleted the "common.bnk" file from the original "sound" folder of battlefont2. Is there anyone who could help me recover it?
