As for getting the data back, if what Red posted doesn't work, there's probably a company wherever you live that could do it for you if it's really important.

If you do it in MP and one of you has a PC, you can use the dedicated server tools to set this up without having to do any modding whatsoever. Both sides will be limited to three units, though.

Have you tried putting it in a computer as a non-boot disk? Or perhaps a Linux system as an addon disk?

Yes, but only just barely. You technically don't meet the CPU speed requirement, but that may prove to be a nonissue. You will definitely have to run it on the lowest settings possible.

As a BioWare fan, this news excites me tremendously. They will be announcing a new game December 11th at the VGAs on Spike.

You can see some info and the trailer here. Rumors are going around that it is a Shattered Steel reboot, but my personal opinion is that it's just Mass Effect 3 (though "just" Mass Effect 3 would be awesome to so many levels).
