Snow Leopard Upgrade from Tiger

Apple says that users of Tiger 10.4 would need to buy the $160 box set of Snow Leopard to upgrade to 10.6.

I read an article from August of 2009 saying that the $29 Snow Leopard 10.6 upgrade disc, for upgrading from Leopard 10.5,  will upgrade Tiger 10.4, saving $140.

Has anyone heard this or have tried this? I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and would like to save $140.

Basically from what i understand, it works 100% fine on installing from Tiger to Snow Leopard, you can ether wipe your drive and do a fresh install or simply install from tiger to snow leopard (however i've heard this can lead to problems of some applications not working with Snow Leopard possibly leading to troubles)

Also you must be using an intel based computer for this to work.

And I can't find it anywhere in writing by Apple but it is said to be illegal due to the fact that you are paying for an upgrade disk for leopard, not for Tiger, however i see no difference and no where on the OS about page does it say you can not upgrade to tiger with it, it just forgets to mention that you can.

If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, just purchase Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard and follow the simple installation instructions.

Upgrading from Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger.
If your Intel-based Mac is running Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger, purchase the Mac Box Set, which is a single, affordable package that includes Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard; iLife, with the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD; and iWork, Apple's productivity suite for home and office including Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.

All in All, the install may not work 100% smooth due to compatibility with some of your existing apps, but it will work fine, i know people who have installed Tiger to Snow Leopard and it worked for them without problems.

Thanks for the reply HC.

I do have an Intel Mac, albeit the first iMac with the core duo processor, but it should still work from what you said and what I have been reading.

Tell me how this works plz fishy :D I also have tiger on my intel mac (the one right before leopard came out).

Rexy — Here are the threads I have been reading. I don't want to tell you to go ahead and do it. Seems there is a statement in the License Agreement (you know the "agree" we always click and never read first when installing software) about having the 10.5 Leopard first. I will report back here after I try this. Back-up, back-up, back-up.

Lol its always too long to read... :(
Hope it works and doesn't blow up your computer :D
Time to read for me though  :'(

Ok question to hardcore. If you wont Let us post about illegal file links on some of the forums then why would u advise Rex to take the upgrade even though apple has clearly stated that this is illegal. I am not saying that it wouldn't theoretically work but I'd this upgrade does go wrong it wont be apple's fault.

This is a grey area. If you read the EULA's of most games they say that you are not allowed to alter game files, which technically makes all mods illegal. However, companies don't care about people making mods as everyone does it and it poses no harm.

Also, there are no actual links to illegal files. For example, you cannot post a link to a place where you can download snow leopard for free in a way that violates US copyright law. I haven't heard anything about apple prosecuting people who used the disc to upgrade from Tiger to Snow Leopard, so I doubt they care much.

However, I have heard people who were prosecuted for sharing and/or downloading illegal copies of software, as well as websites being shut down or sued because they were a hub for people to share illegal copies of software. We don't want that to happen to us (or for the site to just turn into a warez site) so our rules forbid it.
it doesnt really matter if apple has persecuted someone yet, all that matters is that it may be illegal and it may not work. It could be possible that this disc works only if upgrading from Leopard. I would suggest you go to the nearest Apple store and ask a specialist. APPLE ROCKS :P

Here's the deal, I don't have a copy of the ELUA for this Snow Leopard disk, i can only go by what is on the site and that only states that the Leopard users "can" use it, and that the Tiger users "can" use the larger pack, however NOTHING on the site says that they can not use the Leopard install on tiger, Apple has admitted it works without problem to use the Leopard install disk on Tiger.

I can promise that i know multiple people and have heard of 100s more who successfully installed Snow Leopard on Tiger using the Leopard install disk with no problem with that said.

*(EDIT)*

Finally got a write up of the ELUA, IT will work, it is breaking the ELUA in that you do not own a copy of 10.5 OS-X and have it installed on that computer, that is how it works, the disk is the exact same as the other version the (140$) and in no way would have a bad install, its illegal and its unethical but this is what you asked to be answered.

And to answer your earlier question Russell, when did i advise Rex to take the upgrade? I was talking to Schtick. And when did apple "clearly" say it was illegal? nothing on the site remotely says it is illegal or even stopped and i had to dig to find a copy of the ELUA (normally not possible before purchasing).

And the install would only go bad if you had some reason for it to, it works perfectly fine, it has no problem installing on tiger other then support for some apps you may have but this is 3rd party and not akin to anything of Apples app line up, most people can upgrade those apps aswell tho instantly for newer working versions. Its the same disk as the other installs, you don't even have to have Tiger installed. or any OS for that matter.

The thing is, they are giving you a discount if you have Leopard, are people going to exploit this fact? yes. are you? its up to you, Its a manner of your own ethics, most people in their lifetime have broken countless ELUA's, have you ever played a mod for a game? 99% of the time thats against the ELUA have you installed any Side Mod for SWBF? That is in the core files of the game and is editing the game, it is against the ELUA and you broke it likely, does this mean your a bad person? no. it means you wanted to do something the company let you. They gave you the tools, and you took that option, breaking the ELUA is not good, but its not always the end of the world most of the time.

Schtick, by whatever manner you choose to buy Snow Leopard, i hope you enjoy it.

it is more of an inference, if apple wanted to state that tiger users COULD use that 30$ upgrade then they would have said it. i am sure that Apple is smart enough to state that all Intel computers can upgrade with this upgrade. Also rex, alot of the features of this operating system uses 64-bit architecture so you may wanna check out your hardware specifications

No, its advertisement, if you walk into a store they can tell you that you should buy this more expensive computer because it will run better, this does not mean that it is the most powerful computer for the price, or anything like that, very few places will do that, just because it is said to be that. They are here to make money on the software and hardware the make, they put it out because its the choice they want you to buy not the choice you have too. (even tho in this case they do specify after you buy it. in the ELUA)

Apple did say it works.

The disk in the 30$ install and the 140? $ install are the EXACT same. the only difference is the manner in such the ELUA states you can use them.

Its the honor system that Apple has always used, you could always buy one OS disk and install it on as many computers in the world as you wanted, is this illegal? yes. the ELUA says you can only install it on one computer (or 5 if you buy the family pack) It has almost always been this way atleast anything in the past 10 years. Does this mean that people follow it? no. people install OS-X on custom/PC computers all the time, that is against the ELUA aswell.

Also, All intel computers (with 1 GB of memory, 5 GB's of hard drive space and a Disk drive for installation) can run Snow Leopard. You just won't see all the perks that Snow Leopard mainly offers.
