Title: SWBFGamers Christmas Modding Contest 2017
Post by: Anyder on November 29, 2017, 03:50:00 PM
Good night everyone!

I would like to announce the SWBFGamers Christmas Modding contest for 2017 . I would like as many people as possible to submit a christmas-related mod (if not, just a winter one), and to compete to win this contest.

(https://www.swbfgamers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thebowmine.com%2Fresources%2Fchristmas-garland%2520%25285%2529.png.opt836x192o0%252C0s836x192.png&hash=513fed57bf3b1c947f4cb5c786b70487709fcfd8)

The deadline to submit mods is the 28th of December. After that I will wait until the 30th to announce the winner. You have about a month to develop a great mod.

The winner will be picked by, either the SWBFSpy Learning Department or by a poll, if I there are at least 5 mods competing.

Participants can submit both SWBF1 and SWBF2 Mods. (Ignore the board name)

As for the rules, they're the following:
- They must be submitted before or on the day of the deadline.
- You can team up with someone to develop the mod. In that case, both players will be given the award.
- You can enter from 1 to 3 mods (but take into account that quality is always better than quantity).
- The size of the mod can't be larger than 64MB (or else you won't be able to upload the file here).
- You can't submit mods which have already been developed. However you may submit something that u're already developing, as long as it's related to the competition theme.
- If there are no better mods released, we may consider granting as well a second award: "Modder of the Month".
- An award will be given to the winner. If the mod is surprisingly good, we may consider granting the so-coveted "Master Modder" group, besides from the respect of winning one of our modding competitions.
- If only 1-2 mods are submited, there will be no competition.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me here, or post below!

Is this only for Battlefront 1 or would mods and maps for Battlefront 2 be considered?

Also, what constitutes a "Christmas" themed map? Could someone be able to make a Hoth map but with Christmas trees all over it? Or does the map have to be completely Christmassy in nature?

I just wrote it to the guys on the SWBFSpy Community Discord server, so that's a good question:
You can submit --> Shells.lvl, Commons.lvl, Modmaps, custom SIDE skins, modmap/vanilla map skins, ...
As long as it is related to christmas, u can submit anything.

Keep in mind u can submit up to 3 mods. So if u have several ideas and the time to convert them into mods, then feel free to send them!

Anyone need a reusable christmas light extrusion blender template? Think of all the custom lights you could hang from your building models!

Anywho, I've attached it. Edit the Beizer curve (add points, move em around, etc) and watch the light and wire populate automagically! I have basic uvs on both the wire and light models, no materials are applied because I rebuild mine in XSI anyways.

I'm going to be using a 1x256 3 color gradient texture for the lights, and add the scrolling effect to the light material. This will make the lights change color smoothly. I might try to offset the uvs of each light, making them all different colors.

I don't mean to double post, but I felt this needs a bump.

I think we need some kind of incentive to get people interested in modding.. Maybe the deadline is just to close for us?
I'm very interested in what everyone else builds, and I hope a bunch of people join in!

For anyone interested, I'm modeling a custom cloth banner that will include player names and a greeting.
You can PM me here or on discord @ RepComm#4638 to have your desired tag on it! This is for everyone, not just modders.
If you give me a color, I'll add a tent for you also in the camping area, with that color of material.

I have no problem with anyone double-posting after certain time has passed.

It's about a month. If the deadline is too close, I may consider postponing it, but only if I see people working on a Xmas-Related mod.... (For instance, like u're doing uploading ur mod pics)

forgive me if its a stupid question.

what if you upload it somwhere else like media fire of MEGA?
could you still enter it or does it have to be here?
you would have a post leading to it ovbiosly.

so is this 64MB just for SWBFGamers or is this litterly a rule for this compition?

I plan on making somthing to enter... like I did on Halloween.

well best of luck to you modders and you better work hard!... or santa won't get you anything... not even coal... I'd like some coal for Christmas.
Than i could burn it and stay nice and warm hyggeligt.

I would like mods to be uploaded here --> "Star Wars Battlefront Maps" or "Star Wars Battlefront Mods". If we have enough xmas/winter-related mods I will create a new Category and move them there.

Whenever files are uploaded let me know...  I check the downloads daily to see if any file has to be approved, but I'd rather be told in case I forget to check them.

I'm making a mini train for my tree, here's a re-purpose-able train track that follows a circle path in blender (attachment).
It has a basic plastic and metal texture and some basic uvs also. Edit the path to transform the track model instantly!

Is this competition still going ahead? How many potential entrants are working on something for the contest? I'm hoping to submit something but I wonder how many entries there will be in total.

Well my map is healthy (bug wise) and ready to roll out, though I had hoped to put a lot more animated fun stuff, but I'm a bit busy and may have to leave it as is. There is a good 13 days left, so there is obviously still room for entries.

Well, since I didn't get more than RepComm's mod, I guess it means... he's the winner of the contest!

Congratulations, RepComm!

To be honest, despite having nobody to compete with, your mod was really cool.
Thanks for keeping me updated in the Discord server about the progress of the mod

RepComm's mod was great - the new models fit right in with the Christmas Spirit.
My only issue was that it was snowing inside the buildings.  Nothing a few effect regions can't fix, and not a big deal.
Congratulations!

Congrats man! It was well deserved.

Talk about fierce competition though! :P

Wooo, thanks guys!
I must say, I think I barely made it against the competition this year..

Yeah, I haven't even attempted to use regions to do that before. This is actually only the second time I've even used particles at all (I didn't realize you could just copy paste code from other FX files, its really pretty modular).

I'll cough up an update where I fix the terrain rendering funky colors on certain terrain qualities, more animated things, etc. I am pretty busy right now, however..

In the end, I made what I wanted to play myself (I like to just chill out on maps instead of constantly raging war against endless AI), so that made it WAY worth it.
