SWBF1 Modding / Re: More than one installed copy?
November 19, 2016, 06:36:09 PM
Right, you can have as many copies of the battlefront folder you can handle and run different mods in each, but you cannot register two different CD keys at the same time as it now.  All folders will use the same CD key in the registry.

General / Re: What do you think about Starship Troopers?
September 21, 2016, 11:00:31 AM
It has been so long.  I remember really liking the start of the movie, then as it drug on and on, I felt like the action scenes were all I was watching it for.  And it had the same feel of Total Recall, which I loved watching the first time, but then when I watched TR a 2nd and 3rd time, I began to feel like I had been duped; plenty of memorable scenes, but I'd much rather watch something else.  Darn it, I have forgotten so much of Starship Troopers I might have to watch again, this time with the kids.

Now, Galaxy Quest is a true classic.  I've also gotten back into watching the Buck Rogers series, and find I like it so much more now than when I was a kid and didn't really get it.  Wish I could find all the episodes.

Tech Support / Re: Best Networking Hardware Vendors?

The plus and click are not any industry standard terms, which I guess you may know now.

The advantages of the managed switch increase with the complexity of your network.  The lower end managed switches may let you verify speed and duplex settings; prevent accidental loops, and let you see how much traffic and errors you have on the ports.  This is very helpful if you have a problem; for instance, if one machine's speed test is slow, on an unmanaged switch you don't know if it is the switch port.  It could be the PC, the cable, the switch, or something else.  On a managed switch you have much better chance of getting it figured out.  They can include many other features such as separating vlans (for instance if you have a DMZ or a guest network) or combining ports together for more speed.  The more advanced you go, the more geek creds too.

If all you need is low bandwidth, maybe a few devices, generally an un-managed switch is usually adequate.

I was going to try that too, well I think it was Majesty PFE Leader Sam and Ganstar that was suggesting it, but I think it's a fine idea,  I just haven't had any freetime to look at GR yet.

Netgear has had some good and so-so products, best to check the reviews on Amazon or newegg.  I tend to buy things like that from Amazon, Newegg, or Tigerdirect but you might find a better place over there.  I have mostly Linksys and Cisco here, I have had some good TP link stuff, really just depends on the particular model so check the reviews.

My home network is rather complicated so I am using mostly managed switches but if you are staying small, something like that should be fine.  If you happen to want to get into doing some fancy things with your network, I am really impressed with the Cisco SG300 line of managed switches which will cost about 5 times as much but incredible functionality.  I am also a huge fan of Ubiquiti Networks, mostly rock solid products with lots of features but gonna be more money than the Netgear stuff.

I got most of it (missing some parts due to crash) on freecam.  c0c0beam might have recorded it in 1stP; I'll ask (he did not)

Public Square / Re: SWBFGamers Discord Server?

I tend to agree that it would be better that Overlord Led presides over the channel(s) or one of his appointed minions volunteers.  IDK how the thing really works but if anyone can create channels, IDK how else to keep track of it all.  So far I have 3 known channels in my list for BF2 but they are organized geographically which to me seems unintuitive since we are spread all around the planet and may be on at any time day or night.

Teamviewer is free for non-commercial use as an alternative to remote desktop.  With remote desktop (aka RDP) you should restrict failed login attempts to put a time out after a few failed attempts and change the standard port from 3389 to something less interesting. Otherwise, internet scans will detect 3389 open and run a dictionary attack against it.   Also, it is safer if you remote from the same IP all the time to restrict incoming RDP to the address you are remoting from, then internet scans will not see 3389 (or whatever port you choose) as open.

With Teamviewer you can set up a login and it works better (IMO) if you are using multiple platforms or locations to log into the server remotely,or if multiple people are remoting into the same session.

VNC is another alternative, I don't use it so I can't comment.

CDKey on BF1 multiplayer not recognized rev 3 Win64 disk version

http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1403

This is for Windows 64 bit disk version only.

First patch worked sometimes, but not all the time.  This is a quick revised patch that is an attempt to mitigate the problem (without time to figure out a full understanding of the exact problem).  Not fully tested, consider this a beta version 1 but may get you online and playing.  Please let me know if you have success or failure.
