Title: Question about PCI-E 1.0 and 2.0
Post by: Jedikiller on August 19, 2009, 03:45:39 PM
Hey tech peoples-

If I were to go pick up a PCI-E 2.0 graphics card (let's say this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814129113)), would it work in my PCI-E 1.0 motherboard? And if so, what would I be sacrificing in terms of performance, or anything else really?

Thanks!

It should work, but the bandwidth to the card will be cut in half. However, if you plan on keeping that card next time you plan on upgrading the motherboard it would be a good idea to have the 2.0 card.

What do you mean by bandwidth to the card? Do you mean that it won't look as good as if it were on a 2.0 slot?

It just means that the max speed of data transfer to the card is cut in half. There is no change in capabilities of the card itself

btw, by upgrade mobo I meant just upgrading to a new computer
