Title: Steam and Valve for Mac- Official Announcement
Post by: Jedikiller on March 08, 2010, 02:56:50 PM

Valve has announced Steam and all of their own games will be coming to the Mac platform in April! Everything they make will also be coming to the Mac as a day-one release.

Should you already own a game, you will be able to obtain a Mac version for free. Multiplayer is integrated. Everything is pretty much exactly the same.

Valve is also allowing publishers who partner with them to distribute Mac games through the service.

This is a huge day for Mac gaming. What do you think about it?

I think this is probably the best news I have ever heard when it comes to Mac gaming! The accessibility might give of CoD 4 and Valve forums a chance to get some activity. Also, bootcamp users don't need to boot into Windows as often :D

Also, the SDK is going to released to OSX!!!

ALL OF THEIR OWN GAMES O_O
Does this include things like Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat?

While I cannot confirm their older games, all Source Engine Games (CSS, DoDS, TF2, HL2 series, L4D, L4D2, Portal 1/2, etc etc) are natively ported to OSX.

Because of my extreme amount of spare time, I will be making a comparison video of the two versions of every Source game I own.

This is indeed a great thing.  Shame on them for not tapping it earlier....

I have some threads/posts on my site related to this.  One of them you all should appreciate.  :)

1st Announcement on L4D Blog

See post #5 of this thread:  http://www.flamesandash.com/showthread.php?t=2453

Fancy New Steam UI

Then General Steam News Item see post #12:  http://www.flamesandash.com/showthread.php?t=2391&page=2

Honestly, I believe it has been in the works for awhile and the hold up was the new Steam UI.

Feel free to join up with [FLASH] on some games.  Add me to Friends, same name as the username here.

Awareness though at least on your TF2 server...it is adult oriented.  There is cursing and sprays that would not be considered family friendly.  However, it is still managed under extreme respect guidelines.  We have moms and dads in our Clan and Community.  You can always use the ingame Mute function though.   :tu:

Some of you older SWBF players that know me.....know this.  ;)

Lastly, so far pretty much everything will be hosted by PC for MP games.  Nothing as of yet for MAC based servers.  I don't see the point to support another OS, quite frankly.  As evidenced with older games...it's just a client translation.   ::)

would anyone happen to know the status of the beta? it is already a week into april, if Steam wants to get this UI on the market they need to get this beta out now, if not a few weeks earlier.
Title: Re: Steam and Valve for Mac- Official Announcement

Russell, It is a closed beta, Valve chooses only the people of their criteria to test their beta software. It's not "hey sign up here and you get the download the beta!!!!" That would be called an open beta.

The chances of being accepted is very low. I haven't gotten any reply from Valve after all this time so I'm assuming they've already gotten the beta stage done with. If not, they're finishing it up for an official release.

i understand but i havent seen any news on the internet over the beta actually starting. Even if it is closed, the fact people are starting to get accepted will begin to leak. Steam could at least bother to send an email saying you didn't get accepted.

News most likely won't post on things unless it's a public beta. Practically every single game made went through closed beta stages, the news blogs didn't post it.

eh, ok.

ok so the new beta has been released to the public with a completely revamped UI. But the bad news is that it is only for windows. Now correctly if i am wrong, but wasnt the new UI supposed to be released simultaneously with mac. In the new UI description they didnt even mention the mac beta. *im sad*

It's going to be released to the Mac side sometime this month, we just have to wait patiently.

that revamped UI beta came out before they even announced the Mac version. aside from that, they likely won't even have a public Mac beta.

Considering Valve's Rep i'd say no it won't be a midnight release, its just an app....however i may be wrong they could want to try and make something big out of it. I'd expect it by 1 EST tomorrow

The timing is perfect for me.
Ive been using a QAM reciever in my TV to get all the cable channels from my provider while only paying the basic cost. It looks like the cable company finally caught on today because most the channels are now blue screen and researching isnt bringing up anything.
Damn. No more discounted cable. It was good while it lasted.

Looks like Ill have more time to play on Steam.

Aaaaand it's out! Surprisingly valve time doesn't apply here. The TF2 server I usually go on is listed in my signature; hope to have some fun times there!

Well, when they release it for mac, anyways.

if they dont release tf2, HL2, and LFD 1/2 within 2 weeks, I will ragequit life.

The new games this week suck...  Killing Floor looks pretty good, but who wants to pay for another game.  Why can't Valve get the games we already have in our library completed first.

i dont care about getting the games in our library. I WANT TF2 AND LEFT FOR DEAD!!!!!!

by getting the games in our, library he means getting TF2 and L4D2, he owns them already PC side.

Since TF2's in the beta, it's most likely the next game to be ported.

Post by: Soap Mactavish on May 19, 2010, 03:48:47 PM
lol oops, i thought he meant games that we have added to our library that arent compatible with steam.

if you already have the game then why do you care about getting it for mac?

Because he has a Mac :P
Once Valve fixes the performance issues and eventually ports their games, I will migrate to the Mac side once again.
