Title: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure
Post by: Breakdown on November 06, 2009, 06:55:24 AM
In a world of despair, and fantasy clichés...

RAKA'S ADVENTURE

In a land far away, an evil ruler has triumphed over the good kingdom, forcing the people to be his slaves, leaving the land barren, the places the good people left behind slowy becoming ancient relics.

Raka Teron was a young peasant who lived in  the southern fields behind the Great Castle, when the evil ruler Olos took control over the good people, Raka had hid away in a secret compartment in his basement, listening to the aweful sounds of his family being wrenched away from the home, screaming for mercy.

Raka lay in the compartment for 6 days. On the seventh day he emerged, to find that no people had escaped. The fields and the castle and mountains were unthouched, almost as if they all just simply dissapeared...

There was an old fairy tale that said in the Brown Mountains there was a sword that could kill any type of evil. However, the sword is not easy to find, there were pieces of a map scattered all across the land in small tombs, usually protected by a puzzle of sorts. When all the map pieces are put together properly, they revealed the location of the Sword of Slayers, deep inside it's mountain cave.

Raka decided he had no choice, if the fairy tale was really the truth, he mustn't take chances. And so, Raka began his grand adventure.

So here we go, Raka's Adventure! As you may see, this map is completley different from Raka's quest, actually, after this one, Raka's Quest will be considering obsolete, I didn't like it too much.

I made this one in it's own world so I could have more freedoms with my ideas. As you may remember from the screenshots topic, I had posted some early pics of this, it was originally supposed to be in Dantooine, but yeah that has all changed...

So, the point of this map to roam the land searching for these map pieces. Seems easy right? Nah. There's going to be a lot of thinking involved in this. I plan to  have each map piece guarded by a "Guardian of the Dark" or something, just to add that old video game flavour of having bosses at the end of each "level".

Check this topic often, I will be updating!

Awesome, Cull :)

Also, as for release dates, I'd expect maybe December, or possibly into the new year, or earlier. It all depends on my pace.

Progress so far:

Map: 55-60%
Sides: 20%

At least in my judgement.....

It would be nice if it was like Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess where you could teleport to sections of the map, assuming how big it will be.

I will be reskinning a Kaduu or a taunTaun maybe so you can have some sort of quicker transport around the map

Don't worry, I hate walking around the whole map, it bothers me. :P

I was thinking of using teleporters, but they don't work in SWBF1 :(

Maybe someone can create a custom vehicle!
I haven't done vehicle in XSI before. The only things I ever really worked on is weapons and props.

Or an easier thing to do is just reskin a speeder and place them on the CPs that are throughout the map. It'll give you a reason to get near them and ambush instead of taking a flyer and taking  them out the easy way.

Huh? lol

This Raka doesn't have any star warsy stuff in it, which includes flyers and speeders, did you not read the first post? xD

Title: Re: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure
Post by: Breakdown on November 07, 2009, 10:13:40 PM
It's a map based off a fictional idea Ithought of, where Raka is a character that searches around an area for peices of a map that lead to the one sword that can kill off the evil ruler person that's taken control over the land.

So what you do in the game is explore the map looking for these pieces of the map, in the order which I will present to you all. When the last map piece is found, you can go into the mountains and find the sword

Though you can fidn the map pieces in whicever order you want, you have to capture them all if you want to beat the game

A few reasons why the Raka series is possibly the best of SWBF:

1. Non-linear, exploration-based gameplay
2. Difficulty, Making the AI of Battlefront actually look good
3. Strategy to maintain health and ammo
4. Long gameplay
5. Replayability
6. It's MADE BY BREAKDOWN!!!

Aww shucks :P

This map will improve on most of those points, as in it will be better than the first one, the exploration value will be very high, seeing as you have to explore the entire map to search for the pieces of the map

The only thing else I would recommend is vehicles or at least a decent method of transportation. No one enjoys walking for 20 minutes doing nothing.

Yeah, as I said, I will add a reskinned taun taun or something just so it's somewhat faster

Except I don't think you can bring a taun taun through the tunnell system I have set up, well maybe, but we'll see

ow lets talk about multiplayer...

I plan for this to be 100% multiplayer compatible, seeing as I don't have any restricting MP such as the grappling hook, however I'm pretty sure there'd be tons of lag, maybe, I guess it depends on the host

So if everything works out, grab a buddy and give this a go with a little help when it's released

Anyways, I love the multiple environments. I am under the assumption there will be a ton of lag.

Hello, no updates this time, rather, I have a request for assistance...

If there is anybody here that could show me step by step how I could add AMBIENT music to play through the whole map, like just a clip of music on a loop that plays through the whole map, I would be VERY appreciative.

PM me back with some intructions if you want to help. Only PM me if you know exactly what to do, I don't want anybody responding back with "Uhh...I think you do this...and then add that..and...I'm PRETTY SURE you have to add this in too"

Remember to Personal Message me, I don't want this topic cluttered up

Thanks!

We have a lot of sound tutorials at GT:

QuoteSound
  • Custom ambient music tutorial (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=12236&st=0&sk=t&sd=a)
  • Adding custom sound effects and streams tutorial by Vyse (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=9541)
  • How to add custom sounds (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=6166)
  • How to add missing shipped sounds (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=3812)
  • How to add missing shipped sounds(expanded) (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=4750)
  • How to add missing sounds without creating a new .lvl (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=13809&p=241820#p241820)
  • SWBF2 (or 1) sounds overview (http://www.gametoast.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=18595)

You want the "custom ambient music" tutorial, and when I wrote it I was using the BF1 tools, so it'll obviously work with them. Any of those are applicable to either game, though, because the sounds work the same.

Yeah don't worry about those problems..

Progress report time! (Tomorrow i might have some screenshots)

- I think at this time, I estimate the gameplay to be maybe 30 minutes to an hour, don't worry though, the majority of that time WILL be spent doing useful things like killing, not walking

- I'm trying to limit the amount of walking you have to do to as minimum as possible, the only parts where you have to do a fair amount of it is probably going to be in the tunnell systems and the maze part

- Thanks to Mav, I'm working on making some custom music using my keyboard and guitar. What would you guys like the music to be like? Peaceful, creepy, fast and galloping? (Similar to old school NES) ??

I prefer fast and galloping over peaceful and creepy. 8-bit NES sounds would be pretty cool too.

Definitely in favour of some old-school NES goodness.
Title: Re: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure
Post by: Breakdown on November 20, 2009, 08:31:30 AM
Well I'm not saying the music will BE 8-bit, just similar to the style.

I think the Zelda theme music would be kind of a good basis for mine, it would fit the quests well, and would prevent boredom in a way, so yeah I'll work on that.

Also if I can, I'll try to give Raka some sort of secondary weapon that when "fired" it will play some vauge instructions for the map, this way I won't have to reply to twenty people complainging they don't know what to do
Title: Re: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure
Post by: Jon415 on November 20, 2009, 03:28:38 PM
I would prefer creepy music in the dark small areas like the tunnels, and maybe the city, but nowhere else.  The only problem i have with this is that in the previous raka, I only had to die once to loose (1 reinforcement) so every time i died i had to restart the map and wait for it to load again :(
Title: Re: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure
Post by: Breakdown on November 20, 2009, 09:35:22 PM
I can't make it so the music only plays in certain areas, sorry

But I have the soundtrack that will go on loop pretty much 80% done, I just need to record it, which won't be able to happen until later in the week, since tomorrow i need to study a lot and on Sunday I am busy

Also, Raka will be getting 2-3 "lives" this time, to make up for the fact this map is much larger

Yes you can, those are called "sound stream regions" and they are another type of sound you can do. For those particular types of sounds you should read Vyse's tutorial - however, any and all of the sound adding is going to be best done by simply copying the way stock maps have set up sound.
Title: Re: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure

I knew that there were things called sound regionss, but I just wasn't sure if it was SWBF1 compatible, thanks again Mav

EDIT:

So I've been messing around with sounds, can't get anything to work yet, but I'll keep trying!

ALSO!

I am very happy to announce that yet again I have YouJediJunkie on my team to do some great models for me, and a big thanks to AG, who said he can export it for us!
Title: Re: (W.I.P.) Raka's Adventure
Post by: Breakdown on November 29, 2009, 11:15:24 AM
Update time!

I just went through the whole map being timed, and it lasted about 30 minutes. And remember, this is me knowing completley what to do. I had to restart once and some parts of the map aren't ready yet so I had to kinda skip over them, or just wait an estimated time before moving on.

Remember, this is without any enemies yet, so it will likely be harder/more time with more enemies there

Overall map completness = 80%

I'm still working on music, I've followed Mavs tutorial but I still can't seem to get my .wav in game :(

Things still needed to be done:

- Some models (For the village, player models, transportation stuff, etc)

- AI (Will be probably working on this more this week)

- Certain map aesthetics/fixes needing to e finished (Adding more props to make it feel more alive, fixing floating objects, water edges etc)

- I need to find a way how to instruct people how to go through the level, I'd add it in a walkthrough notepad file with the release, but only about 2% of people every read any form of text that comes with a map. I was going to use sound regions, but I can't set those up either, yet.

- Weapons

I know this probably seems like a lot, but trust me, it's not. Compared to all the stuff I have done before this update.

Release time?

At this rate, and if I get sound working or not, I'd say Raka's Adventure could be an early/late Christmas present. For those who celebrate it, if not, well you still get a present yayy..

Also, YJJ's computer is currently broken, and I don't know how long it will take until he can get it fixed and have some models soo it all depends on certain things

Thanks for your time

Hint on sound problem:
Maybe copy the sound config from the assets? Maybe when the music (stream) compiled, it ignored SFX (effects) sounds.

Post by: Breakdown on November 30, 2009, 06:22:31 AM
I'll figure out all that jazz in the finishing touches stages of the map, which is still a bit away.

And now that I have sound regions working, I'm going to definitley add RPG elements to the map, if I can. Like, it might not be an RPG but there at least will still be "voiceovers"

Only problem with the sound regions, is that it always plays no matter if you are actually in the region or not, so any "voices" will probably be 30 second clips. I think I'd use voiceovers more to assist you on your journey rather than to just talk, because you can't talk back and forth here, and the main point of the map is the actual adventure.

But either way, this'll be really cool! :D (I'm happy)

Alright, so my weekly update this time is pretty short

-The map aesthetics are good and tweaked, I even added fish and birds to add more atmosphere

- I have started work on the AI

-No models still

- Sound is still going through the planning stages/making lots of progress though

- Reskinning is being worked on too

So I guess if YJJ can't get his PC fixed before the holidays, I won't be able to give you guys a Christmas present D:, that is, unless I get another modeller, because there's really a lot of stuff I need done still in that department...

Nothing new in screnshots, just some glamours to keep you busy

(Excuse the Xfire shot there :P)

Remember that those little melodies are NOT final, I just wanted to throw out a little tease...I whipped that up in like 20 minutes sooo

Just wanted to give you a gerneal direction as to how it will sound, the next audio samples will be when the actual map is released, and they wil be final, and awesome (I hope)

cool music breakdown. i know this one map that had a very cool heavy metal like music but it only came on at spawn and then stopped. how will this music play, throughout the game play?

I'm setting up sound regions, so certain peiecs of music will play at certain parts of the map

This is looking (and sounding) awesome BD. Maybe an electric guitar track with the organ?  W/E you do this will be a nice accomplishment, something original. Can't wait. Way to step up AG, thanks.

I was thinking of adding some guitar to the track, but I'm not sure how it can fit, in the end part I'm sure it could fit somewhere though

Thanks Schtick!

Hello all

Haven't worked that much on this lately, and just wanted to let you know I'll start work on it again after holidays are done, I want to try to work on other smaller projects I have.

Thanks

BD

OMG, I haven't had the time to do the recording. I'll try to do it on Monday :(

AG, I made about four different versions of the same recording for Breakdown. If it is ok with everyone can the recordings be exchanged between the people that submitted a recording? It is cool with me.

Hello guys

Raka's adventure is now off hiatus! The main core gameplay is pretty much done, same with the actual map aesthetics

The only things left now are these:

- enemy AI (I'll leave that to last)
- sound regions
- a seperate map for the boss battle( shouldn't take too long)

I might post some new screens in a bit

Update time

First off, some bad news.

I shared the map with Captain Rex, just to test if the MP would work, and to get another persons opinion on it. Sadly, it crashes upon loading in multiplayer

I have no idea why, possibly because the amount of objects in the map just won't settle with MP, because SP works fine.

I'll still try to see if I can sort this out, but I'm not sure if it's fixable...

maybe its because of the size of the map, if a maps to big mine allways says cannot connect to host.
And btw its still fun for SP :D

Holy poop BD, that is SO COOL!  :tu: But for the storyline: A human can only survive like 3 days without water, and a week without food.. other than that, nice!  :P

Did I mention that he didn't have any food or water? He had canteen of water and some munchies don't worry about the plot holes, I made that story up in 10 minutes xD

I can see how single player might be better for certain maps like a personal journey.

Well SP is mostly better then MP in my opinion. In MP i cant find the challenge anymore. Exept in those matches and tournaments, thats why i hate it that they are so late

Thank you all for the kind words..

Updates:

- Main gameplay is finished  :cheer:
- Sides are not completed, will be working on them in the weekend
- I'll be doing a beta test soon, so keep watch on this topic if you want to test...
- I decided to leave out custom music and voiceovers for this version, sorry for those that were looking forward to it
- The map now has way more platforming that I had originally planned, three of the 5 map pieces now require some "platform" jumping to get to

Overall, the release will be very soon. I think I may be able to get this and the boss battle out by the next weekend, unless some horrid tragedy rears upon the map or something else pops up.

I'll edit this post later tonight for some new screenshots

Hi BD,
If you need a tester, I can help. I have a little experience at testing maps. ;)
.. I can also test the map in both Mac and PC. I have BoPC with Windows7, as well as the mac version of SWBF, using Mac OSX 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard)

Just wait for him to do like he says, ok. There is no such thing as an auto beta tester unless you are involved in the actual map/munge making process.

I'll probably just skip beta testing phase, and instead just release a beta for all to play

Almost done, I believe this can be finished this weekend..

Also, the boss battle will not be released with this, instead it will be released in a couple of weeks. (And boy oh boy, it won't be easy)
