Title: swbfgamers.com mappack idea?
Post by: Kit Fisto on December 24, 2012, 03:15:54 PM
So I had this idea, and it was that we make a swbfgamers.com mappack. Filled with the greatest/coolest SWBFI maps made. We could "market" it by having someone take a bunch of cool screenshots of the different maps and maybe a vid ( someone who likes editing? ) and then upload the file to any SWBF friendly place. Modb, filefront etc. even if the site is unreliable I would be more than happy to re-upload it to any site that looses the file. What do ya guys say? Cool? Bad? I think I tried to do something like this before but it didn't work out so well. But this time I have it more organized in my head.
So I would like to know what maps to do maybe?
I was thinking some conversions along with custom maps?

Great! So it's on then!
Here is my plan:
1: select mods/maps to put in the mappack
2: get permissions
3: create a video for YouTube showcasing the maps ( I would need someone else to make it but I will upload to YouTube )
4: Create a README including individual maps readme's & an "intro" telling about swbfgamers. AND how to still play online. :)
5: Upload/release mappack to multiple SWBF friendly sites

Sounds good to me! So what maps to do, and how many? I say 7 maps is a good amount. Oh and how about we put in an "exclusive mod" like SK's legion changer! I think that will make it get lots of downloads! :cheer:

Here are my suggestions, please post yours! :)

1) Nar Shaddaa: Vertical City
2) Tantive IV: Interior ( sk's with my patch )
3) Dagobah: Swamps ( Sereja's )
4) Geonosis: Dust Plains
5) Snakes Modern Map ( sorry I forgot what it was called :P )
6) Coruscant: Jedi Temple ( sk's )
7) Sereja's SWBFII Kamino conversion*
AND
SleepKiller's Legion Changer Mod

* = the reason I have that is because that Kamino conversion requires a new common.lvl, but SK's legion changer only works if you have the common.lvl for his mod. Now I really like both the mod and the map and I think others would like it too, so is there a way that someone could some how make a common.lvl that has whatever Sereja's Kamino needs and then make it also compatible with the legion changer?  OR Sereja could release his scripts for that map and someone could make it call upon the custom common.lvl via mission.lvl... I think that would be better. Do you guys get what I'm saying?

Who would want to do that?

I like this an I hope we get it completed!

Not a bad idea, and yeah CCSC is an obvious choice.

Make sure the video has lots of brostep, otherwise I won't watch

If you want you can make the vid! That would be great!

Well I think we should include the BESPIN Skin Changer because, yes that is pretty cool. But I also think we could maybe include the legion changer because from a single player point of view, I think people would enjoy the legion changer a bit more because it is for all maps. But don't get me wrong I love the Bespin Skin changer mod.

So Phobos would you be willing to make a new common.lvl that would include the legion changer and the AT-RT animation? I don't know what Sereja calls upon. If you would that would be AWESOME and I would be sure to give you massive credits in the final README product. You can use this I think to include the legion changer in it: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=414
You would have to contact Sereja and ask him what he uses for his custom common.lvl for Kamino.

What to call it? I think "swbfgamers.com official mappack #1"
Title: Re: swbfgamers.com mappack idea?
Post by: SleepKiller on December 24, 2012, 10:30:36 PM
I will not grant you permission to redistribute Tantive Iv with your patch. Sorry. You may redistribute unmodified versions of my ports in this map pack.

As for uploading it to other places. Don't bother with SWBFFiles it gets the most views and downloads by far. But it doesn't get files up anymore. Besides us MODDB is basically the only other place I know of that is worth bothering with. And we may even have over taken them now.

Also keep to maps not mods. Maps are easy to install and remove mods can become more complex. No legion changer, no CCSC not anything that modifies a file. Keep things simple! Simple means more people can use and it means they will be more likely to investigate where these maps came from.
Title: Re: swbfgamers.com mappack idea?
Post by: Kit Fisto on December 24, 2012, 11:09:54 PM
So not Tantive with a patch you were eventually going to make anyway?  ok I guess.
So no mods, and no maps that replace common.lvls etc.
Well, this is a stumbling block...
Title: Re: swbfgamers.com mappack idea?
Post by: Phobos on December 25, 2012, 12:09:06 AM
If it's labeled mappack, I would advise sticking to mod maps and maybe skins for stock maps.

But a modpack, you could include skin changers and other files which are more complex to install.

And I would need SK's permission to combine legion changer and CCSC scripts into a new common.lvl which is quite a bit of work to do, though feasible.
Title: Re: swbfgamers.com mappack idea?
Post by: Kit Fisto on December 25, 2012, 12:52:36 AM
Well how about we first try just a mappack. Then if it is relatively susscessful then we can do a mod pack! Sound good? :)

So any suggestions for maps? Requirements: it has to function without changing any files in the lvl pc folder. :) Maybe someone can try to get Sereja's Kamino to work by changing the mission to call upon the custom common? Would you like to do that Phobos? ( only if you want to of course )

And you should PM Sereja about the scripts.
Thanks for doing this Phobos!  :cheer:

If this to encourage new people to download mods I would just do maps that go straight in the addon folder, nothing complicated. Then if people enjoy those they can come here and see all the different mods available. I've just realised I have 137 mod maps on my P.C. so I'll have a look and pick out my favourites.

Well for starters i'd love to make it somewhat more democratic....i'd pick all the 5 star maps from Rhynos map rating thing (or whichever you think are the best)
Then make a poll...a big poll....(i hope it's possible)...with around 40/50 maps. Then you click on multiple options...so we can vote for more then one map. (make it a ranking system...and the mapmaker with the most votes gets a tag (or whatever)).
The 10 (or 7/8/14/whatever) maps with the most votes are put in the map pack...then you get the permission.

Then somebody makes the video (can also be a contest for best video), you can also discuss the music...with three polls or what (first poll...what music genre, second poll...what artist...thirth poll...what song)
At the same time you make a map for all the screenshots (around 10 total). Make the screenshot making some sort of contest...the best screenshot will be put in the map (along with 5 other ones)...and the winner gets a tag or whatever

BTW THIS IS ONLY SPECULATION...it's only a way to make it even more fun then it already is....your the one who decides if you do it ;)

I love democracy XD

Two things.
1. How about only putting maps in it that were made and released by the author on SWBFGamers? Meaning ones that were made after January 2011. Else it isn't really a SWBFGamers Mappack.

2. Or each of the modders here makes a completely new map to put in a mappack.

My suggestion is for our great modders (you know if that's you  ;) ) to work together on this. I can only imagine this awesomeness that our mappers could develop if they were all working together. Sure, most of our modders tend to work solo, but all I ask is for some cooperation for something like this.

Perhaps we could convince our mappers to come together and create 3 maps? That isn't asking for too much, especially if they work together. (The only reason I say this is because most modders tend to be specifically good at one thing, like skinning, modeling, ect.) The rest of the maps should be voted on.

If we want an easy download, why not make one of those "self-downloadable" things? All the downloader would have to do is press "Run" or whatever, then it downloads the files in the correct place. I've seen it done before.

Sha-Zam, isn't that exactly how Unit's massive CC project was being built? A group effort? It still hasn't been completed even (I don't think). I love the idea too, and sorry if I sound a tad rash, but perhaps the process of making 3 maps with a combined effort would take longer? Then again, Rome wasn't built in a day, neither are great mod maps. Perhaps at least a more efficient way or a faster manner to finish maps? I don't mean to bang the idea, but I am simply making a reasonable statement.

That sounds good, but the thing is I have had a the modders you speak of say that they "work best alone." So this probably won't happen. It would be awesome if it did though.  :'(

And no self run stuff. The reason being, I'm a Mac, and there might be others out there, and a self run thing would make it so that Mac's can't play any of the maps. Sorry.

The main reason I wanted this was to see what "the best of the best" on SWBFgamers could make. It would probably be epic. So what if I takes longer? We could take this step-by-step, I'm not expecting this to come out any time too soon.

Maybe the ones that are willing to work together could. I'm sure once (or if) this idea gets rolling the other modders might want in.

And no offence to the Mac players out there, but most of the people that play SWBF now are on PC. We could do the self-download thing and make a second version in .zip or something for the Macs. :)

Well that all sounds lovely. But multiple people working on the same map won't really work, each person will have different ideas and concepts. And staying organized is a mission as well.

Quote from: Kit Fistofor 2: that would be quite troublesome and I think that if we had a "contest" the maps would be rushed. I want to stick with already developed maps.
You definitely are not the right guy to be organizing a map pack. Did I say contest? No I did not. By doing thid kind of map pack every single mapper could say they would like to contribute a map to it. They would make it and then send it to the person who was putting it together for integration.

I think I still have the side assets if you don't have them. I'd be happy to help, but I can't make maps. (BFBuilder problems)

I don't think SK wanted to take over this project. It was your idea Kit, so I would either do it yourself or find someone who would steer this into the right direction.

Ok. Well MY plan was to have maps released here on swbfgamers and Lu them into a mappack. No mods, only maps. So the ONLY instillation people have to do is place things into their addon folder. Plus promotional screenshots & possibly a vid.

Now is that all agreed on? I'd like to get this of the planning stage. :)

I still think a self extractor would be better. People that haven't modded or installed mods before might be cautious or get confused if they have to do it manually.

BUT, this is your little project. I'm just here to make suggestions.

Since no one has said anything about this for a while, I am going to make a list of maps that I think should be in the pack.

-Mustafar: Refinery
-Earth: Egypt and Russia
-Utapau: Sinkhole
-Abridon (Not sure if that is spelled correctly)
-Dantooine: Dust
-Hoth: Caves
-Coruscant: Streets and City
-Mygeeto: War-Torn City
More will be added later

I know there are different versions/ports for these maps, I'll leave it up to Kit Fisto to choose the best. (I have only played one version for most of these maps.)

I tried to list maps that would be exciting in MP as well as SP.

What is the limit to how many maps can be added?

I would suggest a maximum of 4-6 maps.  Also, if this is to be a real SWBFgamers map pack, then authors of these maps should be active members of this website.  Otherwise, you can just make a post providing the various links.

Alright, I'll do some research and edit this post with maps made by SWBFgamers members. :)

Feel free to correct me if these maps were made by someone else.

I'm just gonna post all of the stable ports made by active SWBF members so we have a good list to choose from. :panic:

-edit:  Oh, do you think it would be more "fair" if we only had one map for each member? (I'm finding a lot from a couple people)

I agree with Buckler, it would be easier to have maps included by active members of this site. Like SK and Sereja. We MUST have Nar Shaddaa and some of SK's conversions.  :)

EDIT: use this thread for the conversions: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=4591.0

OK, I edited my previous post with stable ports made by active SWBFgamers members. Feel free to correct me.

What other maps come to mind? Those are just ports from SWBF2, what about custom maps?

-edit:  Do we want space maps? Most of them take forever to finish.

Agreeing with Kit Fisto here, Sereja's Nar Shadda! And perhaps SK's Bespin: Zombie City (that map was friggin' awesome). Unless it's more so maps that don't have a custom mission.lvl, then I would say Abridon and Earth maps as well.

OK, I'll add Nar Shadda to the list.

In all fairness, if we were to choose holiday-themed maps they should be the winning maps.

Abridon and Earth weren't made by SWBFgamers members. (Well, not active ones.)

Keep in mind, we will need to get permission from the map makers before we can use any of these.

-edit:  I am having trouble finding who won the Christmas mod map competition. I thought Sereja won, but I wasn't sure.

That would explain why I haven't found it.

@SleepKiller, Sereja, Snake, Phobos, and anyone else that has released maps on SWBFgamers:  I need your permission before I can add any of your maps into a map pack. Don't feel that you have to, but it would be appreciated if we could have your maps as an option for the map pack. You don't have to give us permission to all of your maps if you don't want, you can just let us use the ones you want. :)

Please let us know as soon as you can. Thanks!

I'll send PM's if I have to!  :whip:

Why not make a mashup of different types of music.

The choice is yours, I really have not utilized the maximum potential I have to make outstanding mod maps yet, all in good time though. Currently I'm much more focused on other aspects of modding.

Feel free to correct me if any need to be added/changed.

Still waiting for approval from a few members.

I know this is a big list, so we will have to sift through these and narrow down our choices. Once we get permission accepted/declined from a couple more individuals, I am going to make a poll where the community can decide which maps they like best for a map pack. Before we can do that we will still need to narrow down this list.

Also, do you think space maps should be considered into this? They take too long for MP, in my opinon.

*BTW, I have not added the maps that are similar edits of stock maps. (IE: SK's CC tourney map.) Let me know if you think that needs to be changed.

--

I have bolded the maps that I am going to put in the poll. I chose 3 maps from each of the (current) 4 map makers that I think would be most fun in a MP map pack.

Don't be afriad to make suggestions! I want to hear them!

The only reason I didn't add your custom maps to the list is because the permission specifically said "unmodified versions of my ports".

I assume you don't mind us using your other maps, then. I'll add them to the list. Thanks, SK!

Personally, I think it all depends on the quality of the video. Some videos get the point across within a minute or less, while others may take longer to get their message to the viewer. I don't think it matters too much, as long as it's not insanely long or really short. Just use your own judegment.

I don't mind SP making a video, but if others send in videos then we will probably have a quick vote. (With that said, good luck SirPimped.)

Still waiting from Snake.

I have bolded the maps that I am going to put in the poll. I chose 4 maps from each of the (current)  map makers that I think would be most fun in a MP map pack. Those maps will be put into a poll for voting.

Don't be afriad to make suggestions! I want to hear them!

Ok, by each authors:

Phobos maps: sorry I've never played any of those

Sereja: All of his maps are GOLD! PURE GOLD!!!!!!!! :cheer: Oh that's a little over reacting. No its not!
Ok I think that the ones to include in the pack are: Nar Shaddaa and Dagobah. I think that the port is awesome! It is super fun. My opinion.

SleepKiller: Geonosis and Coruscant. Both of those maps are super fun.

EDIT: think, singleplayer maps...

I've decided to do 4 for each. I can't bring myself to choose, all of these maps are great.  :nervous:

My personal favorites are Utapau, Tantive IV, Death Star, and Rancorland. Come to think of it... I think those are my favorite SWBF1 maps.

I would avoid having too many SWBF2 conversions, maybe they could have a pack of their own though, and instead concentrate on original maps. I would also add Miranda to the pack. http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=696

Which ones would you recommend? In my opinion I think Phobos has made some very good maps but most of them have features that I wouldn't have expected in battlefront which new users who download this pack might not appreciate as much as people who always use mod maps.

I would like to see in the pack;
Nar shadaa-Sereja
Coruscant - Sleepkiller
Miranda - Unit33
Rancorland - Phobos

Rancorland and Mars Siege are my favorite by far.

A pack of own conversions could present problems. Like who's Dagobah to we include? How about Kamino? And some maps we can't redisturibute because the authors are gone. ( scum/strike and others ) It's a good idea but the pack would realisticly only include half of the SWBFII maps.

We need to have 4 maps from each author, make a poll for each authors maps. Make the poll last a couple weeks then use the top voted maps. :train:

I'm sorry, but i was wondering, don't the Napseeker maps belong here as well?
The maps/mods he made were originally made for MXG (if you dont count the one before that), after that it was MPC and after MPC came SWBFGamers...so i believe you could say that the maps Napseeker made were sort of the SWBFGamer community

If they are, then i'd suppose you absolutely need to have those maps in the map pack

We would need his permission. If you can somehow get that that would be great!

OK, here is the list of maps going into the poll:

Feel free to correct me if any need to be added/changed.

I took all SWBF2 conversions out and chose 3 maps from each member (if they had 3 maps). Remember that only 6 maps are going to be in the pack.

Maps by Phobos:
- Elevator Beta
- Kaadu 4.0 Beta
- Mars Siege 3.0
- MC Training Facility Unfinished Beta
- Naboo: Forest Outpost
- Naboo: Grassy Plains 0.2 Beta
- Octogon of Death
- Slaughterhouse 2.0
- Zombie Survival 0.1 Beta

I suggest you remove Elevator, Kaadu 0.4, and Zombie Survival from the poll. These maps are just unfinished beta concepts and not in the proper condition to be considered for a map pack IMO.

Mars Siege, RancorLand, Octo Of Death, Slaughterhouse, and the Naboo maps are probably the best options for listing in the poll. I can change the mission scrips for some of these maps if requested.

Of the 3 I chose, can you please change the mission scripts? I would like the reinforcements to be 200 or less for each team.

Thanks.

-edit:  Oh, by the way, can someone please get ahold of Snake for me? All I need is his permission then I can make the poll.

Hmm. I'm a little disappointed that almost no conversions are going into this. I think that is what people would enjoy most! Maybe if I get time I'll create a mappack with just a couple conversions...

I'll make another pack with conversions. I agree with the majority of the people who commented, only custom maps should be put into this.

BTW, did I leave any conversions on the list? I took out all of the ones that I recognized.

Polis Massa and Geonosis.
I will have more time when we finish this mappack and start on the conversion one.

And filefront just updated their site so they still accept files. It just takes a long time for them to get in the system.

I love the idea of having a conversion or two in the pack, but I don't think it's quite fair to pick our personal favorites without seeing which conversions everyone else likes.

I still say that we should make this pack without conversions, and maybe make a conversion pack later.

I'm fine with either idea, conversion(s) in this pack or a pack with just conversions. What ever is easier for you since you are the main organizer.  :)

I got Snake's permission recently, so I will make the poll ASAP.

Final list for the poll:
Maps by Phobos:
- Mars Siege 3.0
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=581
- Naboo: Forest Outpost
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=581

Maps by Sereja:

- Jabba Goes Party Hall
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=287

Maps by Snake:
- Snake's Paintball Camp 2.0
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=530
- Korriban: City Ruins
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=615
- Utapau: Island Assault
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=784
I'll make the poll here shortly.

My final decision was to leave conversions out of this map pack. We may make a conversion pack later. :)

@Phobos:  Unless there is a fix to the game crash for Rancorland, I don't think it would be a very wise choice to put in a map pack. Also, if any of your maps get chosen for the map pack, could you reupload them with the smaller reinforcement count like we discussed earlier?

Ok well the other maps are already low. Mars siege v3.0 by default has 1000 reinforcements with 64 AI spawned at once for GCW.

Here is a mission.lvl with 300 reinforcements and 32 AI spawned at once. I'm releasing the LUA for it soon too if you anyone wants to mod it further.
