Title: N00bs
Post by: MacGenius on March 28, 2009, 10:35:41 AM
Many of you may think I am a n00b at this point since I am new here but I have played Star Wars: Battlefront for over 2 years. Today I go into a game on bespin Platforms. First of the host is an idiot and hosts Bespin platforms when there are 3 players, but then he goes on from there! He is on the ground and I kill him. He then says "I was Typing" and I shrug it off, I do it again and then he says do it again and I boot you. I say your a noob and then the other player kills him and he boots me.

This is the definition of a N00B!

;-)

...and when have we called you a n00b?

Any I can think of at least one player who has had SWBF for a while but is still a n00b (or nub, try to guess who :P )

I'll admit that I am a super n00b. I don't know why I try, but I do.

I'm afraid some ppl get power crazed. how were you to know he was typing?

Here is one of my noob stories:

I was called a noob on my own server then when i asked why i was a noob i got the (most popular) answer of 'cos you are'!  When quizzing more about being a noob I asked what a noob was to which the reply was 'You!'.  Upon even further investigation when I asked again I was told 'if you wern't a noob you would know'. Me, being me, of course kept up with my line of inquiry, receiving in retort a further 'only a noob wouldnt know what a noob was'.  I then started with the noobish act of calling the person that called me said name in the first place a noob!  Of course the reply I got was 'I'm not a noob, youre the noob'. Pushing the original perpetrator I told him that he couldnt answer me about what a noob was as he didnt know himself. As you can imagine this went on for quite a while! (i do feel a tiny pang of guilt at pushing what I assume was some young kid with a big mouth).

After badgering the kid to tell me what a noob was I was told I should go and ask the guy that runs the server and was reliably told that the website address was the same as the name of the server!  Without needing to leave the game and look up said website I said that the guy that runs the site and server wants to know what a noob was, and if he didnt say what it was he had given me 'special access' to the server and was allowed to boot him! I was told that 'the guy' would never give a noob the password to boot ppl (that bit made me actually laugh out loud).  I told him I would prove it, and when asked to do so I swiftly booted him! He logged back on claiming I was a 'noob h4ckR'!  Again I pushed for what a noob is and eventually was told:

'A noob is someone who is nubile!'

hahaha, I still laugh to this day! Especially when someone called Dresh was reported to Dresh on the thisiswar site for being a 'H4ckR'!

Remembering that has just cheered me up! And El Chupacabra why are you a super n00b?

Noob... ah, those were the good ole days. I miss being a noob. Old people yearn for the "noob days".
But now I'm just a plain old jedi pwnmaster.  :?
When does someone stop being a noob?
Is it when they start to pwn?
Is it time based, say, after a year of experience? Or when they reach adulthood?
Or maybe they stop being a noob when they make their first mod or map?
Can someone be a noob forever? Or is it destiny that someone stop being a noob one day? .. and does someone stop being a noob overnight.. noob one day, non-noob the next day?
Can I become a noob once again after losing my noobiness? .. or is it like virginity, once you lose it you'll never be a virgin again?
And come to think of it, is "noob" a rank, or a class status? ie., Born a noob, always a noob! Or you can elevate yourself out of noobiness by performing some task or ritual?
... Just something to contemplate  ;-)

hahaha, I was wondering more about the 'super' part!  Are you a noob with super powers?

I think you stop being a noob when you've got the sense not to use the word anymore! If you're still calling ppl noobs (and meaning it) you've still got a lot to learn!

Is there a difference between noob, newb and n00b? Or nøøß?

And for the record, super noobs are noobs who have the power to cause multiple people to hate on them all at once!
Title: Re: N00bs
Post by: Radical_Pi on March 28, 2009, 09:34:03 PM
to quote a famous signature:

"newb is a state of time
n00b is a state of mind"

Basically newb is new to the game and still does stupid stuff because they don't know better. a n00b knows better but doesn't care and likes to be complained at. n00b is also considered to be a little bit stronger than noob, but they are of the same vein

Post by: Dresh on March 29, 2009, 04:51:14 AM
No, they all originate from the same thing...newbie!

Some ppl put more meaning to them but in essence they are just someone who is new and uneducated in certain etiquette.

QuoteNoob is a slang term for a new person in a community, group, or video game, and especially on the internet (see internet slang). Noob is short for "newbie", another slang term that comes from the word "new". A noob usually means a bad player in a game, or someone who does not know the rules of a community. Being a noob is usually not a good thing.

ahh Wikipedia, the place where any n00b can change the definition so he doesn't look as bad. Isn't it great?

I think a noob would have made it say "A n00b is a person who despite his awesomeness is hated on by other players." Unless they have a thing for people not liking them.

You all know I'm a lot older than most here. I was using the internet before some of you guys could type...I remember back where ppl were newbies, the term noobs wasnt even invented yet!

This kinda thread shows that ppl still think that a noob holds some greater meaning other than a newbie.  Rest assured it does not!  A noob is someone who is new and for want of a better term 'doesnt know the ropes' and often looks foolish due to this!

Quote(top google listing for the search: what is a N00b?)

Definitions of N00b on the Web:

    * Newbie (also said as nooby or newby) is a slang term for a newcomer to online gaming or an Internet activity. ...
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N00b

    * A newbie, noob, newb. A new user of a game or activity with a lack of experience
      en.wiktionary.org/wiki/n00b

    * Newbie Leet speak term for amateur or beginner.
      http://www.game.co.uk/lowdown.aspx (http://www.game.co.uk/lowdown.aspx)

what gets me is who thought replacing the 'oo' with '00' was a good idea? most slang on the internet is aimed at ease/speed of typing, it's not as if it takes less keystrokes....someone must have thought it looks cool!  In case you didn't know replacing letters with numbers is very noobish, especially when it offers no significant advantage!

I think it may have to do with the n00bs using 1337 sp34k all the time thinking it's c00l

Also, while the official definitions may be equal to newb, if you look on UrbanDictionary most people consider a noob as not wanting to learn, but a newb willing and trying you learn from their mistakes. (Not that UrbanDictionary is in any way the most correct thing in the world, but it does symbolize what the people think)

Or what a select group of people think. They like awesome people like those rock guys from way back but don't like alot of modern music I notice. Isn't it funny how everyone on the TV loves the Jonas Brothers and everyone on the Interwebs hates them?

True, but that select group of people happens to be the people on the Interwebs. So, you get the people who use the term pitching in what they think the term means. I do agree with the basis of your argument though. Go look up teachers there, and after the first page you get tons of people who complain about their teachers. I bet not one teacher is on UrbanDictionary

The surefire way to determine noobness - frequency of the use of the word 'noob'.  The more a player calls others noob, the bigger noob they are.  That, and anyone who uses 'pwn' to mean own.  Skill players don't bother stating the obvious.  They just kill the noob.

Seriously though, people that shout at each other about being noobs, are noobs themselves. It's so annoying.

We were all "noobs" at some point. I'll use Star Wars Battlefront as an example.
We weren't born learning how to mine throw, sticky nade, no scope, long range pistol, pre-determine spawn area, etc. We learned from experience and getting killed over and over by the ones who mastered the game.
After practice and technique, you get better. Then you have more fun :D

Also, how old is this topic??
