Quote from: "The_Pi"woot found the problem! TGA compression breaks it.
RLE Compression - the leading cause of "why does my map crash when I edit a skin?"

It is mentioned a number of times in threads at GT, although to be fair it is not linked to in that specific thread above. It might be worth your (the collective "you" here) while to check out the Battlefront 2 "Everything you need" thread - the games are similar enough that many of the sections will carry over in their entirety (especially the model-related ones).

Quote from: "Hardcore"I honestly have always wondered, but mainy the reason their is more CW mods is because its newer to peoples minds, many who are playing now didn't really watch and grow up with the GCW era, that and they keep making clones, and the story is already their so people don't have to create, and well people take the easy road.

This is why people like it more, because frankly the Battlefront series of games attracts many younger players and they're familiar with the "newer" Star Wars. It's flashier and there are more "booms" to entertain with.

And yes, frankly it's easier to make clone trooper legion mods (it's worth mentioning that really only the clones get changed). All you do is slap a new set of colors and lines onto an easy template and "bam," new shinies.

I personally am not a fan of all the hoopla that goes with these mods (and to be frank - the attention that the mods get - any given legion mod will get twice as many downloads as an equally good GCW-based mod of the same quality level). As someone who's "dabbled" in larger mods, it is a source of frustration that many can make "big" mods with the "same" amount of content simply by coming up with a few different color templates (and of course the attention that they subsequently receive).

However, people make mods off based on whatever it is they like. While I'd like to accuse many mods of simply "selling out" to get more downloads, the truth is that there are a lot of people who just enjoy the glitz that goes along with gruff troopers and big guns moreso than they enjoy the "adventure-fantasy" represented by the GCW. At the end of the day you can only make what you like, and if you want more of it you just need to make it yourself.

Quote from: "The_Pi"Care to demonstrate? AFAIK TGA doesn't have an Alpha channel
TGA does support alpha channels/transparency; it's used a lot in Battlefront.

I'm sure you could find several models that use a different texture for the head than the body, and then you wouldn't even have to bother with anything more than a completely black alpha channel on one texture (and of course the mesh will need to support transparency).

Quote from: "breakdown"no offense if you see this Maveritchell, but I don't think an insta ban is reasonable
Rules...
Quote from: "breakdown"... however, it IS GT's rules..
...is rules. I didn't do it (the ban) but I support it - piracy is lame on many levels, as it makes costs to legitimate gamers rise both monetarily and extrinsically (in the form of "protection" like DRM). Also, if you advertise that you're breaking one of the few instaban rules we have that's just plain not smart.

Anyway this site is not Gametoast and that has no bearing here unless it is also in the rules here. Rules here is rules here and it is not my happy task to have any say in the rules here; I am just an interested observer.

That player isn't very good; he should die lots. Most of his kills seem to be easy AI. Just like SWBF1 (I would assume) anyone worth their salt in SWBF2 MP rolls and shoots on the run.

That was the most stressful* single week I think I've ever had.

SWBF1 Modding / Re: Getting BF2 Maps into BF1?
March 26, 2009, 07:18:15 PM
Quote from: "Napseeker"I'd be curious to know from any BF2 gamers how they'd rank the standard maps, I'd guess that Mustafar, Utapau, Tantive, and the Jedi Temple would rank near the top, while Kashyyyk, Polis, Kamino and possibly Dagobah would be near the bottom.
What's ranking? How impressive the map is? How much fun it is to play?
Coruscant and Mustafar are both pretty visually impressive and fun to play, but by the same token, Kamino and Polis Massa are both really well-designed maps, too. Coruscant and Mygeeto are two of the best-designed maps from I think both a visual and gameplay perspective. None of the maps are what I'd call "poor" from a design perspective*, although Dagobah is notably a bear to play.

*Space maps not included.

Quote from: "Dresh"geez, I cant believe they dropped staff already! They must not trust you guys! lol
That was one of the reasons this was (/is) such a pain in the rear. They probably could have saved themselves a lot of bandwidth (and saved us a lot of community confusion) by continuing staff privileges - we would have been able to redirect users from their sites to our own without a lot of confusion, and we could have just downloaded the contents of the site directly (granted it would be about a 47 GB download).

Quote from: "buckler"If anyone knows if it is possible to do an FTP of the entire directory structure,
please let me know.
Best,
Buck
The FTPs for the network sites have always been restricted to staff, and even staff was shut out of access on Tuesday.
