Where's my vidmode.ini file?

I just installed Battlefront I and wanted to create a custom resolution (1920x1440 4:3). I went to this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront\GameData\Data\_LVL_PC and it wasn't there. I tried searching the entire Battlefront folder, and no items matched my search. What do I do/where is it? I attached an image of my _LVL_PC folder to prove to you all that it's not there.

With windows 10, etc, be sure to look for those kinds of files in ProgramData.  Windows dumps most newly created files in there now instead of in the Program Files (x86) folders.

Another location is "C:\Users\<currentuser>\AppData\Local\" Make sure you enable "Show Hidden Files" on your file explorer otherwise AppData wont be there.

Okay, I found the vidmode.ini file at this directory: "C:\Users\Christopher\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront\GameData\Data\_LVL_PC," BUT for some reason, it's the exact same file as my SWBF2 vidmode.ini file. Somehow, it has all the custom resolutions I made for SWBF2 in it. Even the string at the top is the same as the one for SWBF2, which I'm pretty sure it shouldn't. And none of the resolutions showed up anyway, just the default ones. I even deleted the LucasArts folder within ...\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\... and reinstalled SWBF1, but it gave me the SWBF2 vidmode.ini file again.

My proplems:

  • For some reason, when I reinstall SWBF1, it gives me the vidmode.ini file from SWBF2 instead of creating a new one.
  • The game doesn't seem to use any of the resolutions in that file anyway. Probably because the string at the top is for SWBF2.

What do I do?

EDIT: Could someone give me their SWBF1 vidmode.ini file (or the text in it), so I could copy/paste it into my incorrect SWBF2 vidmode.ini file? Would that even work?

Try hiding the .ini file from the program. By this I mean, backup your .ini file in somewhere where programs wont look (like your documents) and the delete the .ini from SWBF 2's files. Then install SWBF 1 again and see what happens. If that doesn't work, I guess someone could possibly upload the file for you?

I will when I get on tomorrow if it doesn't work if you want.

Okay, let's start fresh now that I understand the issue more.

My issues:

  • No matter what I do, my vidmode.ini file is the exact same as my SWBF2 vidmode.ini. It has a bunch of the SWBF2 default resolutions and a bunch that I created for SWBF2, but none of them show up in the settings. Only the default 5 resolutions show up in the video settings.
  • Editing the vidmode.ini file has NO effect on the resolutions in-game. I could write a short story in my vidmode.ini file and nothing would happen. I'd still have the 5 default resolutions, no more, no less.

This is infuriating. Is it something wrong with my disc or what? Where is my game retrieving the resolutions from? I can delete all but one of the resolutions (If I delete them all, it will create a new file with all the SWBF2 default and custom resolutions all over agian), and all 5 default resolutions will still be there...

I don't know why you don't have more modes in your ini file, but for SWBF1 you would need to use BattleBelk's custom resolution launcher for modes other than available in the game.

edit:  you will also need to be aware that if you use this tool, the resolution won't change until you are actually playing on a map (server list will be at old resolution).

Make a shortcut for this game and put it on the desktop for convenience. Right click on the shortcut and select "Properties". Go under "shortcut" and then "target". Do /resolution "your resolution". For example, "/set resolution 1920 1080". This will override any resolution options in video settings. Hope this helps.

Edit by Led:   No.  This will not work for SWBF1.

Also, I would prefer if SWBF1 didn't use my SWBF2 vidmode.ini file every time I install it. Even when I delete everything involving SWBF2 off my computer, it still manages to use my exact SWBF2 vidmode.ini file. How?!?

I'll try the tool now.

vidmode.ini is created by SWBF.  It is the same as for SWBF2 because it is determined by your video card.

Why do none of the resolutions that it generated show up then?

As I have stated, the game only officially supports the resolutions that you can choose from in the game.  You will need to use the custom resolution launcher (a player made patch) to be able to use other resolutions for SWBF1.

Keep in mind that you are playing a game released in 2004, using technology from that was from 2002.  We are fortunate that we have the custom resolution launcher.

We can help you, but nothing about SWBF will be easy these days.

Ok sorry, that was a dumb question.

I placed both SWBF1 Launcher and SWBF1 Launcher.ini in my GameData folder. Then I opened SWBF1 Launcher.ini and put 1920 for "WIDTH" and 1440 for "HEIGHT." First, I launched the game normally, but my resolution wasn't there. Then I launched the game by double-clicking SWBF1 Launcher, and the resolution wasn't there either. What did I do wrong?

EDIT: I understand. I'm grateful to have a website dedicated to SWBF with such a helpful and knowledgeable community.
