I have plenty of resolutions in my vidmode.ini file, but they don't show up.

Also, I would prefer if SWBF1 didn't use my SWBF2 vidmode.ini file every time I install it. Even when I delete everything involving SWBF2 off my computer, it still manages to use my exact SWBF2 vidmode.ini file. How?!?

I'll try the tool now.

Okay, let's start fresh now that I understand the issue more.

My issues:

  • No matter what I do, my vidmode.ini file is the exact same as my SWBF2 vidmode.ini. It has a bunch of the SWBF2 default resolutions and a bunch that I created for SWBF2, but none of them show up in the settings. Only the default 5 resolutions show up in the video settings.
  • Editing the vidmode.ini file has NO effect on the resolutions in-game. I could write a short story in my vidmode.ini file and nothing would happen. I'd still have the 5 default resolutions, no more, no less.

This is infuriating. Is it something wrong with my disc or what? Where is my game retrieving the resolutions from? I can delete all but one of the resolutions (If I delete them all, it will create a new file with all the SWBF2 default and custom resolutions all over agian), and all 5 default resolutions will still be there...

Another location is "C:\Users\<currentuser>\AppData\Local\" Make sure you enable "Show Hidden Files" on your file explorer otherwise AppData wont be there.
Okay, I found the vidmode.ini file at this directory: "C:\Users\Christopher\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront\GameData\Data\_LVL_PC," BUT for some reason, it's the exact same file as my SWBF2 vidmode.ini file. Somehow, it has all the custom resolutions I made for SWBF2 in it. Even the string at the top is the same as the one for SWBF2, which I'm pretty sure it shouldn't. And none of the resolutions showed up anyway, just the default ones. I even deleted the LucasArts folder within ...\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\... and reinstalled SWBF1, but it gave me the SWBF2 vidmode.ini file again.

My proplems:

  • For some reason, when I reinstall SWBF1, it gives me the vidmode.ini file from SWBF2 instead of creating a new one.
  • The game doesn't seem to use any of the resolutions in that file anyway. Probably because the string at the top is for SWBF2.

What do I do?

EDIT: Could someone give me their SWBF1 vidmode.ini file (or the text in it), so I could copy/paste it into my incorrect SWBF2 vidmode.ini file? Would that even work?

I just installed Battlefront I and wanted to create a custom resolution (1920x1440 4:3). I went to this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront\GameData\Data\_LVL_PC and it wasn't there. I tried searching the entire Battlefront folder, and no items matched my search. What do I do/where is it? I attached an image of my _LVL_PC folder to prove to you all that it's not there.

Quotetherefore I'd recommend u to contact them cause from what I can see its a routing point close to ur home (the 2nd one on the list).
I'll try, but I'm almost positive that the first person I talk to will have NO idea what I'm talking about.
QuoteIf u wanna edit the announcement u'd have to learn how to hexedit and find the lines u wanna edit
Oh. No thanks. lol You can have the credit.
QuoteIt's not Hz but TPS (Tick Pers Second), just wanted to let u know.
Oh. I said "Hz" because I think that's what BF4 denotes Tick Rate as. In the bottom left-hand corner when a server is loading, it'll either say 30 Hz or 60 Hz. Is that not the Tick Rate? I always thought "Hz" meant "updates per second."

@Led Okay, that makes sense. The game is adding about 30ms to my ping. I could've easily put the server in Atlanta and would've gotten a lot better ping, but doing that would mean people in the western U.S. would get significantly worse ping. I think I made the right decision because all of us playing had a similar ping of about 90ms. Therefore, the experience was very smooth, and no one had a connection advantage.

After installing Anyder's updated server manager, and bumping the Host Sim Rate from 20 Hz to 40 Hz, my in-game ping has dropped from 100ms-125ms to 90ms-100ms. I don't know if this improvement is because I restarted the server (not the VPS, just the Battlefront II server) or because I doubled the tick rate. Either way, the hit registry is better than it was before, and my average ping and jitter has been improved greatly.

Last night, my ping was rapidly fluctuating between 100ms and 125ms, but after playing for 2 hours today, my ping stayed LOCKED at about 93ms. Only occasionally did it spike to about 97ms-100ms.

I don't wish to be a burden, but I still have some more questions:

1. What is the recommended amount of CPU cores and RAM to sustain 64 players with no lag whatsoever? I know it's hard to imagine 64 players on one server on SWBFSpy, but if we could just get people off GameRanger and onto SWBFSpy, it could happen.

2. I heard somewhere that full-machines are a lot smoother for FPS games (i.e. better pings or something). Is this true? If the community ever moves from GR to SWBFSpy, and I need to get better specs, I might as well buy a full machine if the pings are better on full machines. I've seen the prices and I can do it if it's necessary.

@Anyder My WinMTR results are attached. I pinged my server IP. I don't really know how to interpret the data though.

I assume the last line is the server, and the ping (or latency or whatever) is 66 ms Avg which what I got when I test pinged Chicago (premium) before buying the VPS?

1. Are these results good or bad? If bad, how to I fix it?

2. Why is my in-game ping so much higher than when I ping Chicago (premium) on NFO's website?

3. How do I replace the announcement? Where do I edit it? I couldn't find it when I pressed the "Edit Announcements" button in the SM.

I just bought a VPS through NFOServers.com and got the dedicated server software up and running. The server is called, "SWBF Community Server." I saw that there was a lack of good public servers, so I decided to create one and have it set up in Chicago so that most people in the continental U.S. can have good pings. I just got done playing a 4 player match (I know, it's not a lot but still!), and I can already tell that SWBFSpy is leaps and bounds better than GameRanger. The hit detection is way better (but still not perfect), and there is no FPS lag. I just have a few questions and minor issues with my server.

First let me give you the specs of my server:
Company: NFO
CPU: 2 core
RAM: 2 GB

  • Are these specs good to host a full 64 player server (even though it will likely never go that high), or should I think about upgrading? I want no lag whatsoever, even at 64 players.
  • My ping to my server in the server browser ranges from 60ms to 110ms, but in-game, my ping ranges from 100ms to 120ms. Also, on NFO's website I checked my ping to Chicago (premium), and it was 60 ms consistantly. What's up with all these vastly different pings?
  • I keep getting this announcement: "This server is managed by SWBF2SM from blackbagops.com" even though I never set this. How can I get rid of it?
  • What happens if I turn the Host Sim Rate up to 30? I want the best hit detection possible, but I heard that this might cause other problems. Is this true?

In my opinion, Battlefront I is an overall better game than Battlefront II, so I've been thinking about buying it. Before I do, I want to know if the community is larger or smaller than Battlefront II's. What can I expect?

EDIT: Thanks for the info! I just ordered it.
#55
I got it to work! That was actually really easy apart from the tedious port forwarding process which I wouldn't have to do anyway on a VPS. Thanks!
#56
I want to try to set up a SWBF2 server on SWBFSpy using the dedicated server software, so I actually know how to do it before buying the VPS. I need a step-by-step tutorial (as detailed as possible) that covers everything from getting the SWBF2 dedicated server software to portforwarding. I'm not very server savvy, so after looking around the forums for how to do it, I got really confused about what dedicated server software I need that will work with SWBFSpy, how to set up the server, and how/where to portforward for Battlefront II. Please don't just link me to other forum posts. If you can, compile (copy/paste) all the steps, information, and download links into 1 reply.

So far, all I have is SWBFSpy installed.

All I could find on this forum was the SWBF1 dedicated server software on a post from 2009, so I had to find the SWBF2 dedicated server software on some website (does the original dedicated server software made for GameSpy work for SWBFSpy?). I installed it and started it in DSManager without any configuration but didn't see it in the server browser on Battlefront II SWBFSpy. I thought I might just need to port forward but where do I do it? Do I port forward in Windows, or in my router, or both? And what are the ports I need to open for Battlefront II multiplayer? I want to start from scratch though, so I deleted everything.

In short, this seems very complicated to me, so please be very thorough in your tutorial.

edit:  Okay, I figured out how to portforward on my router and on my firewall. All I need to know is just what ports to open. I'm sure that saves a lot of explaining.

https://www.nfoservers.com/ is a very good option that works with both.
I saw this hosting service mentioned on a post here earlier, but when I went to their website, Battlefront 2 was not listed under "select server type." Do I have to contact them directly and tell them that I want Battlefront 2 through GR/SWBFSpy?

By the way, I'm not in any hurry to buy the server. Maybe in the coming weeks. I just wanted to know if it was possible and how to achieve it.

Thanks!

NOTE: I know SWBFSpy is much better and more seamless experience that Game Ranger, but I never see anyone online. I would love to host a SWBFSpy server if people started playing it more.

Hi. I would like to host a high bandwidth, low ping SWBF2 server, but my internet connection is definitely not fast enough to host one that wouldn't be laggy as hell.

So my questions are:

1. Are there any game hosting companies that would host a SWBF2 server through Game Ranger (which currently has the largest SWBF2 community)? If not, can I rent a dedicated server from a hosting company and host a Game Ranger server on it?

2. Are there any game hosting companies that would host a SWBF2 server through your SWBFSpy dedicated hosting software? I would much rather host a Game Ranger server because every time I check the SWBFSpy servers, they're always empty. But if no company will host SWBF2 through GR, SWBFSpy would be a Plan B.

3. I found a game hosting company called Branzone.com which lists "Star Wars: Battlefront 2" as one of the games they'll host. I was wondering how they actually host for it? Do they do it through Game Ranger? Do they do it through SWBFSpy? How do they host SWBF2 if the GameSpy servers shut down a while ago?
