While Tunngle has been working, there's two flaws to the program.
- First is that it's a Windows only program, leaving the mac minority (which was the origin of this forum in the first place) in the dust.
- Second, people are having random connection issues to the point of not using Tunngle.
My suggestion: Find/create (why not make one if we can't find a decent free one) a multiplatform VPN solution so that players can connect via the lan function.
Mac and PC players can play together under vlan. We can finally bridge mac and pc players which can help the player population as a whole.
While gameranger is relatively easy to use, it separates Mac and PC users. This mishap can be an opportunity to bridge them together.
is anyone capable of and willing to do this? i would be certainly be supportive of our own VPN for swbf. eventually swbf2 pc gamespy master servers will be also shut down and we might want some sort of cohesive solution for both games
if it was like its own program with a gui we might even be able to distribute it on this website as a sort of required patch/vna to play swbf online
I am all for this solution if it happens. I'm not stating I can code or do programming, but I strongly support this idea. If this was made, this would get me back to SWBF.
By the way, found a tutorial about it by doing a quick google search. Dunno if it will help much tho:

OpenVPN seems like a good tool. Now it's a matter of testing it out.
The only down side I can see with OpenVPN is managing the exposure of everyone's computers while connected.
We would need a relativly easy way to secure network shares and such. At least easy enough that it could be setup by the end players.
-edit...
ok, that and its in Greek..
QuoteOpenVPN's lightweight design sheds many of the complexities that characterize other VPN implementations. The OpenVPN security model is based on SSL, the industry standard for secure communications via the internet. OpenVPN implements OSI layer 2 or 3 secure network extension using the SSL/TLS protocol, supports flexible client authentication methods based on certificates, smart cards, and/or 2-factor authentication, and allows user or group-specific access control policies using firewall rules applied to the VPN virtual interface. OpenVPN is not a web application proxy and does not operate through a web browser.
-edit 2
Ok.. digging around, it's default setup is to allow clients to see the server only.
To allow clients to see each other requires a setting change on the server side.
I don't know much about heavy connection application, but I am all for this, and will help in (almost) any way I can!
I think if I work on my GML scripting, I could create a.... Uhm, I am beginning to ramble xD But yea, I'll help in anyone possible!
FOR NARINA! SWBF!
Man.. OpenVPN might be a great solution.
Anyone know how to do the network stuff?
I get the gist of it, but I still have questions after poking around thier site and forum.
Does OpenVPN have a population cap on network members?
Can it play nice with the existing servers, or will someone need to rent one?
- (Will the existing Game server hosts get upset if it's installed along with the SWBF servers?)
Can it handle the volume of multiplayer traffic without introducing latency?
PLA would probably have a server we could use, as long as its not a huge security risk/spam center.

That shouldn't be a problem since the only people who could play on it would have to have a 8 year old game.
This would be very awesome if it were able to happen.

By saying "8 year old game", you mean the game itself, or the copy of it has to be 8 years old??
Well, nothing to do but read up on it then.
Here is a link to their site.

Documentation, FAQ's, a forum and some example configuration files.
I still don't know if it's appropriate for video game traffic or not.
Networking and protocols is my weakest math.
I'll start looking into how it deals with the adapter (TAP, I think they are calling it)

I opened a can of whoop a** on him, but I shouldn't be the 1 to brag there are players far more skilled then me.
Here is something:
From the How To section:
Determining whether to use a routed or bridged VPN (http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/howto.html#vpntype)
QuoteI would recommend using routing unless you need a specific feature which requires bridging, such as:
■the VPN needs to be able to handle non-IP protocols such as IPX,
■you are running applications over the VPN which rely on network broadcasts (such as LAN games), or
■you would like to allow browsing of Windows file shares across the VPN without setting up a Samba or WINS server.
So now we know it can deal with game traffic, and needs a bridged(not routed) setup to do so.
Also while I hate to be the bad idea person. This is kind of a bad idea, people have started using Tunngle, I really don't think OS X users would see many PC players using it.
Another thing how do we even know that the LAN coding in SWBF PC is the same as it is on OS X? That could be what kills this idea in the end.
I'm with you on this, SK.
A lot of the configuring of OpenVPN is pretty invasive.
We could use NSIS to make an installer (they have an exaple script for that) and automate some of them, but we would still need to figure out a lot of non admin workarounds for some players in the end. (We already have that issue now.)
Another thing. Hamachi pretty much removes the need for user configurations I have a mesh network setup on it. https://secure.logmein.com/hamachi/ih1.asp?lang=uk&c=7eat24zv6kjxe4wuiy6bqy0ymjgkosx40c014oqj (https://secure.logmein.com/hamachi/ih1.asp?lang=uk&c=7eat24zv6kjxe4wuiy6bqy0ymjgkosx40c014oqj) Download this and install it to see what I mean. You download, it installs, you start it up and are all good to go. I stuffed up when installing and trying to test it out the other day. But you get the idea of how much easier it is to use. Only thing is it comes with a yearly fee if you want more than five clients.
I would never use the VPN
Great idea, then we won't be separated between Game Ranger and Tunngle :D

Why?
Security, could just be my ignorance speaking though. I would have to research it more carefully if it were seriously considered as an alternative (don't see the point)
What do you think Tunngle is exactly? It is a VPN.
Well I presume you have been using Tunngle to play with your clan mates. You haven't thought about the security concerns of Tunngle?

Not much. My concerns (which could be completely irrelevant) about openvpn were purely predicated on tirpider's remarks about invasiveness above.
Tunngle doesn't seem any less secure than any of the other options.
They have all the lower ports blocked, so no fundamental windows services are exposed, and clients never even see each other unless you setup a share withing the tunngle client. (I'm still not sure how that part works.)
(see also their wiki)
http://www.tunngle.net/wiki/Mini_Firewall (http://www.tunngle.net/wiki/Mini_Firewall)
(and an interesting disscusion about Tunngle security in general on their forum)

There is some unrelated conversation about GameRanger/Tunngle comparrison sprinkled in that thread, so you have to read between them, but they cover the risks of leaving the high ports open and how it's not a severe concern for most folks.
(I just noticed it ends with a bit of drama, but the points are still valid.)
The only possible hazzard I see with it is trusting the tunngle people and their client.
Same as with any application with access to the network (browsers, games, flash based online poker applicatins with special dialers that use the modem to connect to bermuda... you know.. normal stuff.)
Such is the nature of dealing with the internets.

I could have used the term, inconvienient. It requires some special editing of network details, that while not so much a security risk, are easy to fumble, and require troubleshooting as you go to get it right.

Can Kit play this way ?? :'(
:O Led Has a pic ! im by broadcasting this ! (jk xD)
Well I've given Tunngle a try and it's very, very easy to use. I didn't have any problems connecting to Led's servers and playing last night.
While it continues to leave mac players in the dust, I wouldn't find this suggestion so urgent anymore unless we begin to have glitches/issues with Tunngle.
