Could it be because this asset isn't online compatable? Or am I doing something wrong?
Did you actually get the magnastaff assets, or are you just typing something in and hoping that the assets will magically appear in your munge folder?
I put them in my MSH folder.
Some models only work in SWBFII and will crash SWBFI, it could be you have just found one such model. I know however that I had that magna staff working a while back, I don't know why it wouldn't work for you. The only problem I had was the texture being screwed up but that was an easy fix.
Napseeker got a magnastaff to work in his Final Battle @ Utapau. Maybe you can d/l it and look in the credits to see what model he used...
