I think if you looked far enough back, you would find it to be some sort of fall harvest festival/moon festival/equinox festival that was taken over by some group or another and attached other significance to it.

3 girls died asphyxiated and 2 are in the hospital.
One of these girls was my friend, who everyday I used to see her cause she lives in front of me.
She died asphyxiated cause many people were over her (literally).
