Star Wars Battlefront (2004 Original) / Regarding my DCs
November 21, 2009, 01:00:48 PM
The reason why I haven't hosted any DCs lately is because I can't do so any longer. My parents got a cheaper (and slower) internet plan. I've also tried to JOIN games but that also doesn't seem to work.

Of course, I am pissed off by this but I'm not paying the bills around here so there's not much I can do. I got about 2 years before I can get a job. XD

Other Games / Borderlands Screenshots
November 19, 2009, 09:54:26 PM
I just got Borderlands at GameStop. Ported it to OSX by through compiling wine yada yada...

The game is REALLY fun. It's an FPS with RPG elements and they were able to do it correctly. It's something fresh to play :D
Due to my aging Mac, I can't run the game at high settings :( Either way, the game for me is pretty much flawless (except it can't detect my Shift Button but that's ok, I remapped Sprint to Z) If anyone wants my wrapper so that you can play it yourself, feel free to PM me.

This is a VERY OLD "hack" that still works today. Basically, we are going to get admin access to your Mac without having any install disk (or any password to an admin account in the first place). This is good if you're too stupid to remember your password. :P

Step 1: Boot your computer. Before you see the Apple logo, hold Command(Apple)+S. This brings you to single user mode.

Step 2: Stop panicking. It's supposed to be a black screen with white text.

Step 3: Type in /sbin/mount -uw /
Press Enter

Step 4: Type in rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
Press Enter

Step 5: Type in reboot
Press Enter

That's it! Now you can view the intro movie and go through the whole setup process AGAIN. While doing so, you can create a brand new admin account. Just don't rename it exactly the same as the old one. Doing so will erase everything that account had(in theory).

Have Fun! Don't abuse it...

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard. Got 10 GB of space back. Went to see if some older apps work. Thankfully, SWBF is still functional in Snow Leopard. Speed improvements aren't that big ingame. There's just one very annoying bug I've found:

Zoom is blacked out :(

If you by any chance have Snow Leopard installed, I'd like to verify...
Any thoughts? Are you going to upgrade?

EDIT: Remember Steam that I ported a while ago (but don't have permissions to distribute)? That's broken in 10.6 :(

Tech Support / Mario Kart Wii Problem...
October 22, 2009, 09:19:49 PM
Probably Unit33 will know the answer to this but when I'm playing Mario Kart Wii online, I can only choose worldwide, not by continent :(
When I try, it just stays at the loading screen for endlessly.
Since my internet is fast, it can handle playing with people from half way around the world but I still wouldn't mind playing with North America.

Note: I have the European version of the game but it shouldn't affect it... (or does it?)

I don't know how I came across this but it's true. IGN review Notepad AS A GAME.

If you don't believe me, check yourself. The review is also pretty good :D

Other Games / Wii Update 4.2 Bricking Wiis
October 01, 2009, 08:37:38 PM
Read it here:
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/01/wii-system-update-4-2-bricking-unmodded-consoles/

With that said, please don't apply the system update to your Wii modded or not. Nintendo made this update to delete any custom firmware and exploits. Instead, it has a good chance of screwing up non-modded Wiis. Proceed with caution.

My Wii is filled with custom firmware, Region Changers, emulators, and even a 1 TB harddrive connected to it containing ALL of my games. Obviously I'm not going to bother to update it.

Other Games / Good Wii Games?
September 20, 2009, 05:35:27 PM
I'm having trouble finding decent games for the Wii. To be honest a lot of Wii games just suck.

Games I have right now:
The Conduit
Twilight Princess
Mad World
Mario Kart Wii

Games I will eventually get:
Brawl
Galaxy

What else is out there that's good?

SWBF1 Modding Tutorials / Basic ODF Editing
September 13, 2009, 12:24:00 PM
NOTE: This is incomplete and will be a WIP. I'll add to this whenever I have the time. Eventually I'll make this more organized and easier to read.

Braeden posted a tutorial similar to this back in SWBFmac. That board is offline so I thought I might remake it. It's intended for the newer people want to mod Battlefront.

What are ODF files?
The proper name is Object Definition File (I think). Every object in the game is given these ODF files. The classes, the weapons, the buildings, etc. You can change how things work and how they interact. For example, let's say we want to make a weapon fire 2x faster than it's original value. That's possible with ODF files! we'll go into that later.

What are MSH files?

The MSH files are mesh files. Long story short they are the objects/geometry appeared ingame.

In this tutorial, I will go over three different ODF files (I may add more later on).
This may look confusing at first but if you break it down, it's very easy to understand!
The first will be the soldier ODF file.

This file is named
all_inf_soldier.odf:

[GameObjectClass]
ClassLabel       = "soldier"
--  Rebels, Clones, Droids, etc are all considered as a soldier. Leave this alone.
GeometryName       = "all_inf_soldier.msh" -- This has no affect ingame because GameObjectClass is for the ZeroEditor. We are editing the sides, not the world itself.

Now let's go into the next part of the ODF file:
[Properties]
FootWaterSplashEffect    = "watersplash_sm"
-- When you're walking in water, you make this visual effect.
WaterSplashEffect    = "watersplash_md" -- Similar to above. It's a splash effect.
WakeWaterSplashEffect   = "watersplash_wade" -- Similar to above. Just another water effect.

UnitType      = "Trooper" -- The type of unit. Unsure of the use of this (someone else might explain and then I'll update this). Better to leave this alone.
IconTexture       = "all_soldier_icon" -- Never seen it used ingame (you find the texture in the ALL MSH folder), possibly was used for a feature that didn't make it into the final game
MapTexture       = "troop_icon" -- This is regarding the minimap.
MapScale       = 1.4 -- How big the texture is on the minimap. 1.0 is default size

GeometryName       = "all_inf_soldier" -- This is the msh of the soldier. If you changed this to all_inf_pilot.msh for example, then the soldier would appear as a pilot instead.

AnimationName      = "all_inf_snowtrooper" -- The animations of the class. Almost all of the classes use the animation of the snowtrooper.

FirstPerson      = "all\alltroop;all_1st_trooper" -- This is the arms from the first person view. If you change it to let's say the pilot's 1st person view, it will appear as the pilot's hands.
FirstPersonFOV   = "70" -- The field of view. The field of view is how much you can view from one angle. The higher the better but if you put it too high, things will appear stretched and that is very displeasing.
ThirdPersonFOV   = "65" -- Same as above.
GeometryLowRes      = "all_inf_soldier_low1" -- The low resolution geometry. This is what we see when an object is very far away. If you do not have a low resolution geometry, it will disappear from afar. Snipers will hate that.

OK! Now we have the camera part of the ODF file.

CAMERASECTION       = "STAND"

EyePointOffset       = "0.0 1.8 0.0"
TrackCenter      = "0.0 1.8 0.0
TrackOffset       = "0.0 0.0 3.5"
TiltValue      = "5.0"

CAMERASECTION       = "STANDZOOM"

EyePointOffset       = "0.0 1.8 0.0"
TrackCenter      = "0.0 1.8 0.0
TrackOffset       = "0.4 0.05 2.8"
TiltValue      = "3.5"

CAMERASECTION       = "CROUCH"

EyePointOffset       = "0.0 1.3 0.0"
TrackCenter      = "0.0 1.3 0.0
TrackOffset       = "0.0 0.15 3.5"
TiltValue      = "5.0"

CAMERASECTION       = "CROUCHZOOM"

EyePointOffset       = "0.0 1.3 0.0"
TrackCenter      = "0.0 1.3 0.0
TrackOffset       = "0.4 0.2 2.8"
TiltValue      = "3.5"

CAMERASECTION       = "PRONE"

EyePointOffset       = "0.0 0.5 0.0"
TrackCenter       = "0.0 0.5 0.0"
TrackOffset       = "0.0 0.0 3.0"
TiltValue      = "5.0"

CAMERASECTION       = "PRONEZOOM"

EyePointOffset       = "0.0 0.5 0.0"
TrackCenter       = "0.0 0.5 0.0"
TrackOffset       = "0.4 0.2 2.8"
TiltValue      = "3.5"

All of these regard how the camera works. You can try experimenting with these to change the camera angles ingame.

Now let's look at the interesting part. The weapons and health of the soldier!

AimValue       = "1.0" -- Have no idea what this is, I'll find out eventually.

HealthType      = "person" -- The type of health. Leave this alone if you ask me.
MaxHealth       = 300.0 -- This is how much health the soldier has.

Acceleraton       = 70.0 -- If you've studied physics in High School, you know what this is. The higher it is, the faster it is.
MaxSpeed       = 6.5 -- The maximum speed of your soldier. The higher the faster although be aware that the animations doesn't like this to be changed. Put it too high and you will literally glide.
MaxStrafeSpeed       = 4.5 -- The speed when you are going left and right.
MaxTurnSpeed       = 4.00 -- The speed when you are walking at an angle.

WeaponName1       = "all_weap_inf_rifle" -- This says that the primary weapon is the blaster rifle. If you want to give it the sniper rifle instead, change this value to all_weap_inf_ sniperrifle.
WeaponAmmo1       = 6 -- This is how much ammo you do have. You can allow it to hold more or to hold less to give yourself a challenge.
WeaponName2       = "all_weap_inf_pistol" -- The is the secondary weapon you have. You have a pistol by default.
WeaponAmmo2       = 0 -- The pistol is a charging weapon so it will be kept to zero.
WeaponName3       = "all_weap_inf_thermaldetonator" -- This is the grenade.
WeaponAmmo3       = 3 -- This says you have 3 grenades. You can give yourself 1 grenade, 100 grenades, whatever you want.
WeaponChannel3      = 1 -- If I'm not mistaken, this means that it is to be used as a secondary weapon.
WeaponName4       = "all_weap_inf_crackgrenade" -- This is the weaker grenade.
WeaponAmmo4       = 3 -- This is self explanatory by now.
WeaponChannel4      = 1 -- This is self explanatory by now.

AimFactorPostureSpecial = 50 -- This is regarding your aim. The lower, the better.
AimFactorPostureStand    = 100
AimFactorPostureCrouch    = 140
AimFactorPostureProne    = 160
AimFactorStrafe    = 60
AimFactorMove       = 70

Now finally the last part of the ODF file:

AISizeType      = "SOLDIER" -- Keep this alone

--The following are the different sounds the soldier will make. All of them are self explanatory.
HurtSound               = "all_inf_com_chatter_wound"
DeathSound              = "all_inf_com_chatter_death"
AcquiredTargetSound     = "all_inf_com_chatter_acquired"
HidingSound             = "all_inf_com_chatter_hide"
ApproachingTargetSound  = "all_inf_com_chatter_approach"
FleeSound               = "all_inf_com_chatter_flee"
PreparingForDamageSound = "all_inf_com_chatter_predamage"
HeardEnemySound         = "all_inf_com_chatter_heard"

ShockSound              = ""

FoleyFXClass            = "all_inf_soldier"

This post was made for the certain people who ask the same questions over and over again. I will now explain how SWBF servers work in the most informal language I do.

Gamespy Server: A multiplayer service EXCLUSIVE for SWBF PC players.

Gameranger Server: A multiplayer service EXCLUSIVE for SWBF MAC players.

Direct Connection
: This way of hosting is independent from GS/GR. This is the only way to host a server where both Mac and PC players can join. You start a server with you only. People join your IP address. This type of hosting does not allow server lists (Gametracker for example) to recognize you.

Dedicated Server: Similar to a Direct Connection server. The server is faster this way although you must use another computer with SWBF if YOU want to join.

Dedicated Server Software: A majority of PC servers use this. It allows you to host a Dedicated server on GameSpy without you having the game running. The downside to this is that only PC players can join. Like regular dedicated servers, you must use another computer if you want to join your own server.

MPCGamers.com's server is PC only because it uses the Dedicated Server Software.  There is no Dedicated Server Software for Gameranger/Mac Users.

I dont understand why people use gamespy.

Quote from: Buckler on September 15, 2009, 11:44:29 PM
The Mac equivalent of this question is "I don't understand why people use Gameranger."

It's not a choice if you select the Internet Option to play a game using the PC version of
SWBF.  The upside is that you can easily see who is playing in any PC SWBF server, because it's all tracked with Gamespy.  The lists are available via widgets like Jedikiller has installed, and is also available by programs like xfire.

It is not possible, as far as I know, to get a list of players that are playing with Direct Connection.

SWBF1 Modding / [WIP] AG's 2fort
September 04, 2009, 07:22:51 PM
AG's 2FORT
A classic TF arena for SWBF!

Prologue:
I've decided that I need to stop dropping projects and need to work on something a bit smaller. The reason I've never released anything is because of either the SDK's limits (Zombie Mod) or because I just get bored to hell making it (Rebel Weapons Mod).

Also, the reason I don't try anything that involves Star Wars is because I barely know anything about it. All I know is that there's a bunch of droids, clones, rebels, and light saber people stuck into one universe. Why did I buy Star Wars Battlefront? I don't know.

About:
I've decided to recreate 2fort for Star Wars Battlefront. It's probably the most popular map in the Team Fortress franchise (READ: There are more than two TF games)

With that said, I am recreating Team Fortress Classic's 2fort.

Why choose TFC's version over TF2's version? It's a lot easier to make! That means I will actually finish it! I can spend more time on the level design rather than spending it on smaller items for visual effects (SWBF isn't that pretty of a game anyways so why drain its resources?).

Substitutions and minor changes will be made in favor of the gameplay and the fact that you cannot swim in this game. Other than that, this map will be very similar to the TFC's 2fort.

Progression Log:

September 4th, 2009
Nothing presentable or anywhere near done but here's a little teaser of what I am currently up to.

Update: The front is starting to get along. :D I still have to build the fort though.
http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/8154/sept4th20092.png

September 5th
I spent more time on the accuracy of the front design today. It's as accurate as I can make it compared to the real 2fort. Other than that, I added an extra wall in the front

Tech Support / Make Firefox Faster
August 09, 2009, 10:09:07 PM
This is a small trick that you can use to make Firefox even faster than it is now! It works on all Mozilla-Based Browsers (Camino, Songbird, etc..)

It's quite simple as I will explain here. I've even added pictures for the ones who can't follow directions.  :biggrin:

1. Type in about:config. This will appear:

Just say yes to it, but don't do anything stupid during the next steps.

2. Add this to the filter: network.http.pipelining. We're going to change this from FALSE to TRUE.

3. Change the maxrequests to something bigger, like 30.

Follow Red's tricks, too:
Quote from: Red on December 10, 2009, 07:42:21 PM
Guise, you aren't going to utilize the full potential of that unless you up your http connections.

Go to about:config and filter "network.http"

change "max.connections" to a maximum of 50 (any more and it slows, I have it at 42).
change "max.connections.per.server" to something along the lines of 18-30. (24 for me)
change "max.persistent.connections.per.server" to something like 6-14. (8 Here)

This will help enormously when loading multiple tabs.
4. That's it! You're a genius! Go tell your friends and your family of your accomplishment. :moo:

Other Games / *RELEASE* Steam OSX Beta
August 05, 2009, 12:54:00 PM
Note: I'm not done with the beta, I just went to make this post ahead of time.

This is a port of Steam for all the Mac users on this forum. It is a fully working version of Steam, along with their games and tools. This is excellent for the people who don't want to buy Crossover.

It doesn't require Windows, Crossover, VMware, etc. It works just like an normal application, because it is :D

I WILL NOT provide you ANY GAMES. This is Steam and STEAM ONLY. If you want to play the games, you'll have to download them through Steam like the rest of us.

The port supports a large number of games. Due to my financial situation, I cannot buy every single Steam game and test it out myself.

Welcome Center / Won't be here for a while
August 01, 2009, 02:47:30 PM
Long Story Short:
Something has come up, need to resolve this before it gets any worse than it is right now.
Wish not to speak about it. Will not be online, don't know for how long. It could be as short as 24 hours or as long as for months. Don't know as of this point.

Thomas

EDIT: This means I'm NOT making it for the Platform Wars or hosting any midnight DCs.

I was able to host a non laggy game with 8 people, including me. It was so fun playing with VS! I think I can start hosting games now :D

I'll have it support both Mac AND PC users. I'll go over the details in the afternoon (it's 1 in the morning right now)

Here's the first game:

Released Maps and Mods / Rebel Weapons Mod
July 04, 2009, 12:27:34 PM
About this Mod

Basically, I'm modeling brand new weapons for the Rebels. Since I don't know much about Star Wars, I'm making real life counter parts similar to Counter Strike.

Here's a basic list:

- The Soldier gets an AK47
- The Vanguard gets an RPG
- The Pilot gets a shotgun (haven't decided much on this yet)
- The Sniper gets a Sniper (same as Shotgun, dunno yet)
- The Wookie gets a more realistic looking Crossbow
- Every class gets a unique pistol

Extra Info:

- Not extremely detailed so your aging computer won't crash
- Complete with sounds and textures
- Playable Online w/ Others Without this Mod

I don't intend this to be a complete conversion mod. It's just a simple replacement of weapons to make it a bit more interesting. Of course if someone wants to, I will release the assets once I'm done.

Progress

6/5/09 8 hours later
AK47 finished (finally)

EDIT: This is was taken online with Hardcore. He didn't have the AK47 installed so that means it works perfectly online. I just need to rescale and realign it a tad bit.

Tech Support / How To Properly Get SWBF To Work
June 07, 2009, 01:12:21 PM
NOTE BY DARK_PHANTOM 9/16/2020:
You will NOT be able to use the Aspyr version on anything above Snow Leopard (10.6) because of a compatibility layer called Rosetta that was not supported in 10.7+.  However, if you so happen to have an old Mac that does, I was able to confirm that these steps work and that Direct Connect does work with SWBFspy.
End PSA

After people still not being able to play Star Wars Battlefront on Leopard, I will explain things here.

Long Story Short:

Download this instead:
- http://www.mpcgamers.com/smf/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=19

- http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=19

OR

- http://support.aspyr.com/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=89

Long Story Long:

Star Wars Battlefront WILL NOT work with Leopard without applying the 1.2 Rev A patch.

You MUST install the 1.2 Rev A patch to:

- Play Star Wars Battlefront on Gameranger
- Play Star Wars Battlefront on Leopard
- Participate in any MPCgamers tournament. All of our Mac users play under 1.2 Rev A.

Here's the catch:

There are TWO different versions of the patch.
Only one of those two is working.

There is the "GameRanger" patch and then there is the "Aspyr" patch. Even worse, other websites will mirror either one. Only the patch remade by Aspyr works correctly. The other will hang when installing, being stuck on the file .DS_Store. Therefore, you must force quit and then Star Wars Battlefront will break, causing you to reinstall the whole game.

The right patch is located here (thanks to Jedikiller for upload)
Note: You must register under MPCGamers.com to download this file. That does not include your MPCGamers Forum account.

The wrong patch is no longer being hosted under the Gameranger website, but if you still have it, it WILL hang at the file: .DS_store.

That's probably as easy as I can explain it, if the game is still not working properly for you, please post about it in this forum.

Although if the game works for you now, have fun! We hope to see you on the Battlefield.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):

- Will this game work work on Intel?

YES. The game will work on Intel Macs, regardless of model version, although the game will run very slowly compared to the Windows version due to the fact that it is a PowerPC game. It is still playable of a game, yet don't expect to get 60+ FPS out of that super new computer.

- Arggh! Why is this game lagging so badly??

That's either two reasons. It's either your computer isn't fast enough, or the internet speeds between the host and the players is very bad. The first thing to do is to decrease the LOD and VIEW in the game settings. This will decrease a large amount of lag ingame. To minimize lag online, it is recommended for the person with the best internet connection to host the current game.

- What the heck is this blinking red cable showing at the bottom of the screen?
There are two reasons for this:

Someone is joining/leaving the game.
OR
There is high latency between you and the other players. Adjusting your video settings won't do anything about it.

- There's no severs appearing for Star Wars Battlefront!

Well, you'll need to host one so that others can join. If no one is joining, no one is online. Most games are around 7-11 PM EST. Sometimes the games are even earlier.

- When I try to join a game online, I get the error that I don't have a map that's being played. How do I fix this?

That's an easy one! You need to download a custom map! The maps being played are almost always listed on the name of the room. If you are hosting a game, it is highly recommended for you to do so, that way joining players will know what maps you are playing.

- How do I install a custom map?

I HATE explaining this over and over again. Thankfully, The-Pants made an easy to follow tutorial on how to install maps. CLICK HERE to learn how.

- How do I find custom maps?

There's a good number of places where you can download maps for this game! If you want to find the more popular maps, feel free to   browse the MPCGamers download section as well as http://www.the-pants.org/ website. Download any that you like. If you are looking for other maps, visit Filefront.

- My custom maps aren't showing!

There's a few reason why they aren't showing.
1. You didn't scroll down the page.
2. You installed the maps incorrectly.
3. You installed too many maps.

You can only install 20-25 maps at once. If you put too many, none of them will show. Do not ask me or anyone else here why. It is a bug in the game that LucasArts refuses to fix for both Mac and PC users.

If there is any other problem you have, feel free to post it in our forum. Be sure to give it a descriptive title and explain your problem clearly. That way we can solve your problem with ease.

- The game says that my CD Key is not authorized . . .

The biggest reason that this happened is because you pirated the game. MPCGamers does NOT tolerate piracy at all. DO NOT ask for a working CD Key or for a free copy of the game because you WILL NOT get one.

Although, as I said earlier, LucasArts refuses to fix the game, so there are some bugs that will prevent you from joining the game. Here's the basic ones:

GameRanger bug - GR has an odd bug where the game will prevent you from hosting the game although it will allow you to join other games OR vice versa. Once again, DO NOT ask me why. The best thing to do is to reinstall GameRanger. That means you go hunt for the library files in your computer and delete those as well. If you're too much of a "simplicity" person, just get something like App Cleaner and it'll go fetch it for you.

Little Snitch/Other Firewall - If you have a nice little firewall, you'll want to allow SWBF and GR to connect, or then it'll show the CD Key error.

Tampering with Game Files - Reinstall the game. You've probably tampered with the game file cdkey.txt. Guess what that contains?

No Permission Access - If you don't have write permissions for the game's directory, it (in theory) won't save the cdkey.txt file. Get the admin to install the game for you.
