Title: {HELP} Im new
Post by: Festus on April 17, 2010, 09:30:59 PM
I'm new to the mapping and modding community and need someone to help explain the basics and just how to get started.

Hi and welcome to MPC

We have many good tutorials here that can help you.

http://www.mpcgamers.com/smf/index.php?topic=8.0 This tutorial of mine covers the basics of starting a side mod, I hope it helps! If you have Xfire or MSN Messenger, I'd be glad to help you start with mapping and such, it's just easier to do it in real time over instant messaging.

Hey there Festus!

Here's our documentation right now:
http://www.mpcgamers.com/smf/index.php?board=49.0

Be sure to check out GameToast as well. It's a very useful site and their modding forum is active as well.

Also if there is any specific question you have, feel free to ask. Good luck!

Snake, could you quit advertising your site at every single opportunity? You don't even have anything on it that you made yourself (and the stuff you did is also on MPC)- it's all just copypasted from the guides that others have made or that was included with the documentation for the mod tools. At least give credit to the people you take it from if you're going to take it.

To the OP- good luck on your modding! If you want to get into mapping, here's a good guide for you  to get started with: http://starwarsbattlefront.filefront.com/file/Star_Wars_Battlefront_Modding_Tutorial;46828 It mainly covers mapping, I think, but I remember it was a big help to me when I was getting into mapping.

@JK no, it is actually not. I have not pasted some tuts here I made there. And I'm not advertising, I will stop if you want, just trying to help. The only ones I copy and pasted are from Psych0fred. :'(

Thank you everyone for your help, but just wondering I'm using a mac is this a problem.

SWBF mapping is not possible on a mac, however you can still create mods.

The only downside to it is that you have to upload it to someone (myself, for example) who has access to a PC so that it can be converted(it's called munged) to a format playable in Star Wars Battlefront.

The original SIDES are in the folder /BFBuilder/Assets/Sides/

In Breakdown's tutorial, skip until you reach:
QuoteWe're only going to bother with the "Sides" for now. For the sake of the tutorial we will just be making a simple Republic Side edit, which should give you an idea how to make other mods.

From there down should give you a basic idea on how to mod SWBF. Anytime you have a question, feel free to ask in this forum.

okay the only problem im having is launching the BFbuilder program because it is an .hta file, I tried changing the extension to .htm and that launched it but it wouldnt work properly. So does anyone know someway to open .hta files on mac?

BFBuilder is not supported on the Mac platform. You can only mod on a Mac, copy the folders in /BFBuilder/Assets/Sides/ to another location. From there, you can start modding. You can follow the tutorial written by Breakdown and the other tutorials available here and at GameToast.

alright so if I make a mod all I'd have to do to get it published is send the modded files to someone else to munge the files for me, right?
Title: Re: {HELP} Im new
Post by: aeria. on April 18, 2010, 09:58:54 PM
Yes, that is correct. I am also able to munge for you :D

A quick hi from me. Much easier with a pc to check the changes you make and see if they are good and work. Alot of changes might not be what you expect while in game vs what you see in swbf1 viewer. You have a harder road ahead of you without a pc. I will be able to get on any voice to talk about the ideas you have k. Call me cull or mike or even keenmike.

Thanks for everyones help I'm finally starting to understand modding and actually started a project, but I was wondering is it possible to to take swbf2 odf files and put them in SWBF1?
Title: Re: {HELP} Im new

Porting from SWBF2 is possible to some extent, because SWBF2 runs on an updated version of the Zero Engine, there are some things from SWBF2 you either cannot use in SWBF1 or requires a complete workaround that may give you a similar effect.

Another time I might go into detail on what works and what doesn't.

And thats why I like your, cool words. I will be here when you talk more in detail about it. When ag talks swbf1, I listen.

all right all I really want to do is change the look of the Republic units to the SWBF2 models, is this possible or will it require a complete work around? (and if possible does anyone know where I can download those .odf files)

You want to do this? Its easy. Start a topic with pictures of your ideas and the process will begin.

^   ??? sometimes Mike I wonder about you.  :XD:

Anyway, if all you want to do is change the models to the SWBF2 models then you shouldn't have too much of a problem.  You need to first have the models. lets say that the model is called "clonetrooperbf2.msh" (not a real model name just an example)  you need to go into your clone trooper's odf file and replace all the references to models to the new models name.

All the ODF files are in the assets folder. Go to BFBuilder/Assets/Sides/REP/ODF/ for all the sides of the republic. REP stands for republic.

In there are all the ODF files used for the Rebel team.

If you don't want to change the models and only modify the skins of the model (easier, better approach for new modders), they are available in .TGA formats. Look in BFBuilder/Assets/Sides/REP/MSH/ for them.

From there edit the skins to your liking, and then upload them to me (put all your edited files to a ZIP file) so that I can munge it for you.

A good free image manipulator would be GIMP. A professional one and the one I use is Photoshop. Photoshop's an excellent program but unfortunately, it's fairly expensive.

Which Models? Pictures help. Have you got the program to view mesh files of the models from SWBF2 or SWBF1? SWBFViewer (http://www.mpcgamers.com/smf/index.php?topic=2087.msg22768#msg22768) To take pictures Print Screen button, paste onto a macpaint program and then crop small?

I will be making a tutorial on this soon. If you only want them to look like the swbf2 units just take the msh and tga files you want and change the geometry name of say a pilot from rep_inf_pilot.msh to rep_inf_ep3pilot or whatever the msh name is.
