Title: Are you Upgrading to Windows 10?
Post by: TheGangstarTY on July 29, 2015, 12:43:11 PM
Hello!

Since I'm still waiting for the notification to upgrade to Windows 10, I was wondering what other people are going to do and see what Operating Systems you're going for. If you like, you can post your reason as a reply to this Poll.

Thanks  :tu:

Unless I can find some decent emulators out there that run Windows 95 and up, and works on Win10, then I'm likely not upgrading solely because I already downgraded from 8 to 7 because of compatibility with older programs.

I had the offer a few months ago, it's been in the corner of my screen, tempting me, since.

I like free stuff but I don't see the advantage in upgrading especially when I've got so many old games working and specialist farm software that I can't afford not to work on a new windows.

Also from what I've read they've removed features and added nothing new.

I'm going to buy a new Laptop which will probably have Windows 10 on it, but I will also keep my Windows 8.1 laptop rather than upgrade it. I also have a Windows XP computer for programs with compatibility issues.

I would still like a Windows 7 computer, since (in my opinion) it is the best Microsoft operating system right now for modern computers, but I'm not going to spend money now to downgrade my laptop to an operation system that Microsoft is already trying to make "outdated".

Silly me... I might upgrade to Windows 10 at some point in time (eventually Win7 is just gonna be as old as 98...), but if I do I will have to configure my PC so that I can choose whether I went to boot into Win7 or Win10 everytime I log on... I'm not getting rid of Win7 just yet.

You are allowed to try it and you have a month, after you've downloaded it, to revert back to your previous OS  ;)

That only nails in the point harder that you might want to have a dual-boot so you can keep your old OS and have the new one. To me, a month is definetely not enough time. Especially since I've got a somewhat busy schedule (with school and a job).

I guess, but it's better than nothing

I don't think this is accurate.  Do you have a legitimate link?

As much as I love XP, I think I should upgrade soon, but I think I'll go to 7, unless if I hear 10 is that much better and works with SWBF and other old games .

Considering I've so far had everything run smoothly on 8.1, excluding BF1 (Something with the ICW5 pack forced me to run it in Comp Mode.) If all else fails for all my apps, I can just run in Comp Mode for 8.1. Especially since some of my apps are a bit finicky (Still waiting for ElDewrito 2.0) But, that inner Software Dev geek inside is forcing me to update my computer.

EDIT: Also, I can run a Operating System on my Raspberry PI that won't make it crash when trying to go online now *Cough cough* RaspMC *Cough* But on the other hand, I'll lose my free Minecraft...

Very satisfied with the upgrade. :)

A LOT more satisfied with metro than I ever thought I would be. Even legacy apps removed the brownish hue for a whiter one that blends in with metro more closely. I have yet to do serious work or install obscure software but time will tell. :)

I've got a Windows 8 point-something-or-another and do not intend on upgrading.
I don't want to loose the 3gb of hard drive for some UI updates and other silliness.

I can always change my mind and get it for free later (or at least that's what I got from digging into the FAQ on the website).

It will definitely work well with SWBF. My friend has it and he upgraded yesterday and was still able to join me on SWBF2  :cheer:

Ah, but the compatibility between the two Battlefronts is different. For instance, I installed BF2 with no errors at all (aside from Norton blocking my GameMaster shortcut) on Windows 8.1. When I went to install BF1, I had to force it down to compatibility mode XP just to get the game to work.

The games' compatibilities are quite different in the newer OS'es, so keep that in mind.

Somehow that is wrong, GM, because I ran both games perfectly fine on 8.1 without running compatibility.
I guess it's more of an individual thing...
I can't help you any further though, because I already downgraded to Win7 Ultimate

Well, they might say that, but you can bet some things like Media Center DRM databases will have been destroyed.  So, proceed with caution  ;)

@GM I would like to make a note that I was able to install battlefront on this 8.1 laptop and didn't/don't have to use compatibility mode.

Goldman, I too have to agree with RepublicCommando and Ultimo that SWBF installed and runs fine.

On another note, my sister plans on updating her computer so she might beat me too it. ;)

Hmm, maybe it was SWBF2 then. I know one of the two Battlefronts I had to use compatibility mode on it just to make sure it would run.

I got the Windows 10 upgrade on my mom's laptop that had 8.1 today (We all despise Windows 8.x here so it was a no-brainer to do it).  I had played around with the Tech Preview and liked what I saw, but I'm not too privy to giving up my Windows 7 yet.  Windows 10 is still a little bit on the quirky side... like my stupid settings menu not working and not being able to completely resize my start menu.  Some people have the issues, some don't.  Still better than having tile-mania come up in my opinion.

I don't have a legitimate link, but there was somewhere I read too that said it would keep the Windows.old folder for 30 days and allow you to downgrade.  I checked and the Windows.old folder is definitely still there.  I would be paranoid to revert back though.  Some things may not work exactly as expected.

To dual-boot, you would need to get a separate license.  The free upgrade uses your license for the previous operating system.  Essentially you would have two computers instead of one and then you are dumping approximately $119 US into your computer. (Or pull some strings like me and just get a cheap, legit Windows 8 license and upgrade).

Just finished playing around with it and so far I really like it, all my apps work, games run fine, like some of the new visuals and finally screwing around with some new stuff (I.e. Cortana and wallpapers). Also if you want to change that wallpaper on the login screen here's a link on how to do that. Also enjoy the new pop-ups you'll get fir suspicious files (Disregard the MatPat...)
I know dual-boot requires a new license. Thankfully, I already downgraded from Win8 to Win7, and I still have Win8 bootable on my system ;)

SWBF2 installed and ran fine for me, but that doesn't mean you didn't have issues. ;) I have experienced first hand how two computers with the exact same OS can react totally different to the same program when you attempt to install it. :P
