Title: Upload mods/maps to file front?
Post by: Kit Fisto on November 10, 2012, 07:17:32 PM
Hey guys! As I understand it swbffiles crashes pc people's browsers so I was wondering if anyone wants me to upload their mods/maps to that site? Some maps/mods really deserve to be publicized more. And swbfi file front gets a lot of traffic! Plus we can direct them to this site!!
I will upload according in the order of requesting uploads. :tu:

If you feel compelled to upload any of the things I have hosted here, I don't mind.

I generally avoid filefront for 2 reasons.
1) they crash my browser.
2) they suddenly stopped communicating with me in the middle of trying to resolve the issue.

I figure that if they want me, they know where to contact me. I've already gone above and beyond.

You mean your assets? I was think more addon maps/mods but I can do it for you no problem!

Only if you feel compelled.
I was just giving you the go-ahead from my end.
I don't think the assets are something folks are going to get excited about though :P

I'm more concerned with helping SWBFGamers' archive grow.

Filefront deletes files.

It will be a waste of everyone's time.

Not sure about uploads, but if you want download something, from filefront, with Explorer, you just need set browser option security level to high, but enable to download files.

Filefront is actually where I got my 3 mod maps from for SWBF2. Didn't want to try the SWBF1 maps, as I had heard of many bug reports on them over at Filefront.

All mod maps are written by players of the game.  SWBF2 or SWBF mods can have bugs or not.  Don't be fooled by SWBF2 bias  ;)

The maps I picked had really good ratings anyways. :P

By the way, for the downloads, are all the mod maps in ".rar"? Because I don't have WinRar on my laptop, and I generally prefer ".zip" files. Just asking is all.  ;)

Some are in rar, I've noticed more in 7z or zip though.
Every now and then you will find a self extracting (exe) archive.

Not sure what winzip covers these days, but I know 7zip and WinRar cover all three.

Never EVER upload to Filefront. Theres no telling how many ingenious maps/mods/assets have been lost because of filefront deleting them.

I've uploaded my stuff to filefront. But that isn't my sole place I keep them. I was saying upload stuff that is secure here already so that swbfgamers.com will be more known. I have 1 request so far and Tirpider, you have so many things that you have released. Should I wait until you are done with you OTC units and upload them all in a "pack"?
Title: Re: Upload mods/maps to file front?
Post by: tirpider on November 11, 2012, 09:01:26 PM
I'm thinking the OTC units would be best as side packs.
With each side containing the BF1 and BF2 sets of units.
It is a long way from finished though.
I haven't even approached the 1'st person msh's or weapons yet.
I'd hold off on the OTC packs, as I'll probably end up expanding it and incorperating a side builder for modularity's sake.

That and most the folks modding for SWBF1 are already here.

The folks digging through filefront (as you originaly suggested) are likely looking for mods and complete levels.

Getting permission to cross post some of the older levels might be tricky.

It's understandable, wanting to use filefront to generate traffic, but they really have a flakey service and are more focused on newer games.

How about moddb? Do they host on-site?

I say file front because of my whole story of swbf mods/maps. That was the ONLY place I went for my mods/maps for about 6 months. And if you look at a download page of a certain map/mod and they have had downloads in the last 2 weeks then tha means tha there is SWBF1 players out there looking for cool SWBF1 mod maps. Like I did at one point.

On a side note: I had never heard of modb before I came here. I did know about file front. :)

EDIT: would I be doing something wrong if I put for example scum/strike Mustafar on file front?

Yes you would. You haven't permission. Or something.
Title: Re: Upload mods/maps to file front?

It's an established thing that you don't just take files from one host to another.
You need the content creator's and/or the file host's permission.

It may seem silly, but it's still somone's work, and they hosted it in certain places for thier own reasons.

A example might be to start hosting Microsoft files without a license.  Things would get real very quickly and wouldn't end well for the host or poster.

As modders, we don't have a legal department to back us, but a general understanding of respect for the content creator's wishes for content control, and the files host's right(and responsibility) to control what happens to thier data.

It is just a matter of respect in the modding community. It is just one of those unspoken rules we follow. We don't actually own anything we make so legally one could go and do whatever they wanted to another persons mod without there consent. However you would destroy any respect people had for you and most likely get yourself banned from the sites you posted said mod to if you had claimed it as your own. Uploading something without permission well it wouldn't be that drastic but the file would still most likely be deleted by the site owner.

Ok thanks for the info. What is I tell them on file front in a README or something saying we have for example Mustafar and gave them the link in the README?

If you wanted to encourage more visitors here (although I think numbers are up by a few 100% recently :) ) you could always post on forums like lucasarts, lucas files, moddb (?) with a quick summary or review of new mods here and a link to download them.

I was thinking, how about we make a video showcasing all the recent mods/maps that we have here, I can upload it to my youtube and to filefront and to gametoast and watch the visitors come and join our community! Sound cool to anyone?

Kit, I can't stop you from uploading to filefront.  However, that is the wrong direction to move things.  They are not a stable file hosting platform.  And, as much stuff as they have, they can not even keep SWBF2 and SWBF straight.

We only have what we have here because some of us were able to capture filefront, megaupaload, media-fire, gametoast, skydrive, etc. etc. files and ask the authors for permission to host them here.  Many of those places have given up their bits and bytes to the ether.  They live here because I back things up and run a simple website.

My suggestion--don't do it.  Make people come here instead.

All the while with epic music! :cheer:

Eck no offence but you expect people to watch that kind of thing? Time to think more serious and professionally Kit. Also are you sure your not trying to hard you never see GameToast advertising and we haven't exactly done it before but we still continue to grow in our member base.

I guess you are right. Well......

To everyone: I will no longer upload your map/mods to filefront.
Hopefully the website keywords do their duty!  :)

One thing to really consider before doing anything like that, is many sites don't allow people to advertise other websites on there own. Its quite rude really to go to a site like gametoast who does modding for the SW series (even if its mostly SWBF2) and try to take its user base.... building a community is very hard really, it takes alot of time, dedication, and money to keep this site up and running from the very Start Zak, Weili, Jedikiller and Buckler put in more hours then some of us have even played SWBF to make this community what it is.

And I wouldn't like it if someone came here saying "come check out this other great SW modding site" its a slight to the community and the people who built it.

Getting mods out there for other people to enjoy is great, and generally speaking most Modders do it well enough themselves and if they can't they find someone who can help them.

Realistically advertisements will help very little, swbfgamers already has over 50% of the community for all of SWBF1 in any community having that much of the userbase on the site is huge, so it means swbfgamers is already doing it right and people find this place via word of mouth, google, and maybe a couple from a readme file in a mod.

Videos can be great....i personally love watching commentators and gameplay videos for other games and wouldn't mind seeing some for SWBF.

Would it be possible for you to tell them about tunngle in the readme? Or make a folder where the mod is saying how to play online? :D
Title: Re: Upload mods/maps to file front?
Post by: Led on February 02, 2013, 03:30:39 PM
Kit, it is nice to have site exclusives.

It is always up to the modder where they put their files, but I have never lost a file here, and we have a supportive community for players and modders here.  No one can say the same about filefront.

And, I suspect half of those downloads are added up when the persons browser crashes at filefront.  My does so quite a lot.  So, you should be careful about reading too much into any download numbers.

Then why wouldn't a downloadable Tutorial on how to still play SWBF online be the smart thing to do? Would that not expand the comunity?

And why did you edit my post?! I spent a while putting that together for a sensible presentation for people to read? Now my argument with you now is one sided because no one can see what I put?

Why not make a PDF tutorial for how to play and host SWBF1 through Tunngle and GameRanger, post on the swbfgamer homepage, and upload it to filefront also? That should hopefully get the attention of some players who might still look on filefront but not here.

Macs have a universal built in PDF exporter. Under the print dialog, select Save as PDF

Just throwing that out there.

IMO a forum post is better because it is updatable. A PDF file will need to be re-released and it can be confusing to what the latest revision is.

There may be a time when we no longer use Tunngle, whether it be by finding a better alternative or if Tunngle shuts down.
