SWBF 1 and 2 Tournaments / ICW4 Conclusion
« on: August 25, 2014, 01:53:52 PM »
Congratulations to Freelancer Consortium and Unleashed Elemental Forces (FC+UEF) for winning the 4th Intergalactic Clan War!

They captured 12/15 planets. YAK comes in second place with 2 planets, and BOB in third with 1.

Most importantly, we had a lot of terrific battles, some of which rank among the best in ICW history. And this time, we did it without drama. I think that's something to be proud of!

Thanks to the following people for making it happen:

Dark Phantom, Kelle, Norwood, Syrion -- Admins
Dark Phantom, Phobos -- Map compilation/modding
Led -- Running this website and providing US servers
Unit 33 -- Cartography
Anyder -- Euro server host
The leaders and representatives of BOB (Dark Phantom, Lion, Sauce), GRC (38, Duder, Rodriguez), FC+UEF (Phobos, Elite, SirPimped, Anyder), and YAK (Shazam, GDH).
Also, a thank you is in order for Majesty, who has recruited numerous ex-SWBF, SWBF2, and RepCom players to SWBF over the summer.

And of course, everyone who played!

Community Battles

This weekend, I'd like to do some open-server games, with the ~5 most interesting ICW4 maps (from here; voting is still open) on rotation. These things seem to work best when we have pre-decided times to meet, so please select any times which work for you in the poll here. Let's try to get as many people as we can!

Make attacks here!

Battles should by default be scheduled for Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. However, if both clans agree, and an admin can commit to coming, then it's OK to schedule earlier in the week. Attacks absolutely must be posted by Wednesday at midnight EST.

Of course, clans may only attack planets which are connected by a line (in the tournament map) to a planet they currently control.

Format your attacks thusly:

Attacking clan:
Defending clan:
Planet:
Date:
Time (EST):
Attacker era/side:
Server location:

In the beginning, each clan may make 2 attacks per week. Because the tournament will have a shorter week-wise duration than previously, we may raise the limit to 3 if the first week(s) go well, if the community consents, and if we have enough admin support.

If a clan forfeits, their planets become native held, and attackers will face a team of "native". Anyone may show up as a native. However in this case the natives may be outnumbered by attackers. But there is a limit of 2 members per clan on the native side.

Clans can make planet announcemenets i.e. "call dibs" before officially listing times, as before.

American games will be hosted by SWBFGamers.

General format

Once clans are finalized, a tournament map will be published. It will look something like this. Each clan will start off with 3 randomly assigned planets. After Week 1, planet ownership is based on battle outcomes from the previous week.

There will be 6 weeks. The winner is the clan with the most planets at the end of Week 6. The nature of a tiebreaker will be determined if needed.

Match rules

Defenders can be outnumbered by at most 2 in a match. The clan:merc ratio can be at most 2:1. Rounding favors mercs. So 6:3 and 7:4 are both acceptable.

Matches must start within 10 minutes of the announced start time. If a clan is responsible for a delay greater than 10 minutes, they forfeit the match.

A player may spectate a battle, but only if one of the participating clans agrees to it (and if it wouldn't cause lag due to the amount of players in the server). They will wear a [Spec] tag, and hide out of the way during the battle, using freecam to watch.

Killing admins or spectators is prohibited.

The following generic rules apply:

A. SPECIAL UNIT RULES TBA. Will be either no specials, or fairside specials, possibly depending on map.
B. Vehicles are permitted when available.
C. Capturing CPs is permitted in all situations.
D. Pre-mines are not permitted in any situation, and laying pre-mines amounts to a penalty (admin discretion).
E. Spawn mines are permitted.
F. Teamkill is always off.
G. All servers shall be /noaim.
H. Be polite in yellow chat -- no swearing or insulting.
I. No false starts. (This means: stay very close to green CPs until the countdown ends. Yes, we all have freecam.)
J. Only an admin may countdown a battle.
K. No impersonating other clan members.
L. All players must wear tags ingame. (including Mercenaries)
M. No playing for or spying on the opposing clan's side. Join your clan's side ASAP upon entering the server.
N. Radar Policy: don't ask, don't tell.

Violation of these rules will result in an official warning by an in-game admin; penalties will ensue at the admin's discretion.

Calling out another clan for starting early, or having too many members, is completely fine, but all other matters should be left in the adminís hands.

Admins will record the results of a game using one or more of the following methods: freecam, video, xfire screenshots. An Admin will post the screenshot of the final screen on the forums soon after a battle is finished.

At all times Admins have the right to ask everyone except designated players in the server to stop yellow-chatting.

Clan lists and mercenaries

Each clan is required to maintain a clan list throughout the tournament. Lists can be added to at any time, but never subtracted from (unless no battles have taken place since the change). The lists will be public; submit any changes to me and/or Phantom. The members of the list don't have to "be in" your clan officially, but they cannot appear on any other clan list at any time in the tournament.

So to clarify, if your clan has a friend who wants to play exclusively for you, they should probably be put on the clan list. Players who don't want to commit to playing for a specific clan should not be on a list.

Ingame, players must use a name identical to the one on the list. Mercenaries must wear a tag similar to: (Clan)(Merc)Name.

Namefaking is absolutely prohibited and, if confirmed, results in forfeit. Admins will check IPs in situations of doubt.

Attacks

Each week I'll make a thread on Sunday or Monday where clans will make post attacks, negotiate times, post screenshots, etc.

Date:

We haven't decided on a Euro host yet.

What to do now

To join the ICW4, clans must post in this thread by Thursday, July 2 at midnight EST.

This is a rough draft; please post questions and concerns.

SWBF 1 and 2 Tournaments / ICW4?
« on: June 13, 2014, 06:54:50 PM »
Greetings, players of SWBF!

There might be an ICW4 this summer. If so, the first battles would begin July 18 (over a month away). Community approval is necessary but not sufficient for a yes decision.

We should sort some things out now, though, like the rules. In this thread, vote on the following items:

1. Tournament / No tournament
2. Galactic conquest style layout (like before, with home planets etc.) / Led's non-clan-based idea / some other style (e.g. bracket; make suggestions)
3. CP / No CP / some mixture
4. always evenly matched battles / possible defender advantage on home planet / possible defender advantage on all planets / evenly matched after a certain minimum guarantee / .... etc.

Everything is up for discussion, but these are critical.

Clans who are interested should post here. Clans that are interested but too small to compete on their own should still post; multiple small clans could enter as single factions.

People interested in helping as an admin should PM me if I haven't already talked to you (you can be in a clan). I will not be the only leader of the tournament, there will be one or two co-leaders, having equal authority (in addition to standard admins). These folks will be announced fairly soon so they can also have a large formative influence.

SWBF 1 and 2 Tournaments / ICW3 Conclusion

Congratulations to 212 for winning the 3rd Intergalactic Clan War!

In fact, congratulations to everyone who played. 1.0 came in (a very close) second place. YAK came in a (less close) third place. Interestingly, all of these fine clans spent time at the top at some point in the tournament.

Other participants were Entenclan and UEF.

Most importantly, we were able once again to make some fun games happen. This is the point! All the rules, scorekeeping, penalizing, quarreling -- while maybe inevitable -- are secondary. If any of you found the tournament stressful, I hope that the chance to play in the successful battles was a suitable silver lining.

Special thanks to:

Buckler; for hosting and running this website, and hosting the American ICW3 servers.

Shazam, Deagle, Scorpion; for their service as admins.

All others who performed admin-duties as needed.

Deagle, Anyder; for hosting European servers.

Dark Phantom, Phobos, Shazam; for their modding support.

UNIT 33; for making our weekly maps.

The leaders and organizers of 1.0, 212, En'ten, YAK, and UEF. Without their hard work, and willingness to cooperate with each other and me, the tournament would have been impossible.

Everyone who has helped me, publicly or privately.

I presume that someone will be creating Winner and Participant awards for site-members.

What next?

This thread has another purpose: to discuss "what next".

Another ICW is absolutely not "next"!

But there are other ways of organizing games, at all levels of competitiveness and inclusiveness. Let me call two of them to your attention:

1. The ICA was meant to be as open-ended and community driven as possible. Essentially, it is a forum for scheduling battles between teams. There is no team list (so a "team" might be a clan, or group of friends), and no official scorekeeping. The rules, server mods, server location, maps -- are all customizable on a battle-by-battle basis. As long as teams can agree on conditions, the ICA maintains a list of willing admins (if admins are desired) and will also host the server (if desired).

If there is interest, I would be happy to restart the ICA. We would do everything again from scratch -- rewriting the "meta-rules" from scratch. The paragraph above contains all the crucial information anyway.

2. Soul's tournament is modeled on the ESL. Like the ICA, it is designed to be low-maintenance. Unlike the ICA, it is a proper tournament, with cumulative scorekeeping. The tournament has evenly matched games, with numbers set in advance. It's a very "symmetric" tournament, unlike the ICW which makes the critical attacker/defender distinction and takes place on a "tournament map".

I encourage everyone to read Soul's thread and give feedback.

-----------

I've heard several great ideas about "what next", which I have not mentioned (E.g., we might host weekly public funwars, with voting on maps beforehand, just like between Weeks 7 and 8 of the ICW3.). Many of them can likely be incorporated into the two listed above, but that's not necessary, of course. I hope that the discussion in this thread will drive us toward some sort of consensus.

    212 defends Arena from 1.0
  • YAK defends Docks from 1.0

Remarks

1. *Dagobah has been awarded to 212. I don't blame YAK's leaders for the mystery players, but the screenshot and ensuing discussion demonstrates that the battle was not legitimate.

2. Most people want this to be the last week of the ICW3 -- therefore it will be. (The pattern 8-4-8 is a nice one, I'd say.) In all likelihood, it will be the last week of any ICW tournament.

So make the most of it!

Remarks

1. Rock the vote. ("Beyond that" means both teams have to fill up to 8, and then additional players may be added in accordance with the specified rule.)

2. I've decided to let 212 keep Mos Eisley and in exchange, just give YAK their attack back. This is primarily because I don't like rematches, they're invariably a pain. Also, that was largely my fault, I can't expect everyone to be up-to-date on the forum posts on an hourly basis.

SWBF 1 and 2 Tournaments / Explanation
« on: September 14, 2013, 05:48:27 PM »
Hello players of SWBF,

Let me cut to the chase. I am Joseph (formerly [FC]Joseph).

This has always been the case. I'm online right now on Joseph's account; just ask me if you're not convinced. xfire = joseph9371.

Last summer I organized the ICW under the name Oven because I felt that for a tournament to be successful, the leadership must not be formally associated with any participating clan.

Until very recently, only Rage and Led have known this.

Why am I telling you this? Because until very recently, I have had no problem running the tournament in a fair way, without partisanship towards any clans or members. For example, FC's victories in the first two tournaments were entirely legitimate. I have tried to make the tournament as transparent and fair as possible; I'll let you all decide for yourselves how well I've succeeded.

That was all before very recently. But very recently I have received pressure from Rage, the other leader of FC, to bend the rules for YAK. This won't fly. And because I wouldn't capitulate, he has started a smear campaign against me among FC and YAK, but especially among FC. Here's an example of a post he made about me on the FC swbfgamers board:

Oven is the worst, most ungrateful admin I've ever seen. I knew I would regret helping assemble the map pack. I'm banned from week 5 which he is saying will be the best week now that I'm not playing, I'm banned from admin matches, and might as well be banned from the YAK.

In contrast, it's ridiculous how much cussing and disrespect Anyder gets away with, zero suspensions or penalties for this kind of behavior
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
*I censored the swear words which were not censored in the chat log

This just goes to show Oven is a corrupt admin who:
- Did not even take poll to decide on recons
- Went against his own rules by allowing Anyder to play for multiple participating clans as a member (not merc for either): UEF and 1.0
- Went against his own rules by allowing Anyder to give planet(s) away to 1.0 when UEF resigned: Mygeeto
- Did not penalize 212 for using too many mercs on harbor (namefakers from 1.0) when the rule had been clarified before the week 4 battles started.
- Did not penalize Anyder for continual disrespect of admins and cussing.

I posit that Oven is clearly bending his own rules and showing a distinct favoritism towards the 1.0 clan.

and as such my decision to resign from YAK and the ICW is now final. Up to this point I have respected Oven, but now I see how those who don't, get away with it. Note to all remaining participants: It is acceptable to insult and trash talk players and admins without penalty or ban, driving a tank out of the map though? That will get you banned. I also learned my lesson about helping out with radarphobic map packs, so don't ever ask me for help with those again. Good luck to the rest of YAK, may you find the road to victory.

Further note that Oven is banned from ever asking me to help admin or set up mods or servers for any tournaments he organizes in the future: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=6989.msg74482#msg74482

Here's just one of the many PM's he's sent me:

after all ive done to help you with this tournament and ur gonna betray that by taking away my admin privileges?

i can do the same thing to you

and if you reveal secrets you were trusted with while in fc, i will tell everyone who you really are.

so dont try to threaten me or anyone else in fc thanks.

I never threatened him or anyone in FC; he made that up.

I hope it's clear to most observers that his "case" against me is a house of cards. This post is really only a small sampling of the literature he's sent to me, but I'm not inclined to publish the rest.

Rage is upset by my decisions after Week 4, when if anything I let YAK and him off too easily. I refuse to be bullied.

What hurts me the most is that, until this happened, I considered Rage to be a friend. I have been in FC for years, and known him for even longer. In fact, I have been a leader in FC for much of my time in the clan. Yet within the space of days he has completely turned on me.

Rage has blocked me from viewing the FC website, and told me I may post a resignation on the FC subforum here.

This gave me a profound choice:

1. Leave FC with some lame, dishonest excuse (which would still not guarantee that they wouldn't put two and two together).

2. Tell the truth, and let FC and the whole community decide who is in the right here.

I have obviously picked option 2.

What does this mean for the tournament?

This tournament is broken, and we will soon fix it. It will no longer plagued by constant cheating and disrespect for other players and admins, with more and more rules slapped on top of a growing wound like band-aids.

Why are we even playing this tournament, if not to have fun? Why let SWBF die in a state of bickering and disrespect, when the vast majority of these stem from a tiny handful of people? Why let the bullies win?

So the tournament is starting over. Sort of.

Mainly, I think it would be best to remove YAK from the tournament. Today, YAK had multiple name-faking violations (including someone who faked Unit 33, who is a founder of YAK and also makes our beautiful maps each week); moreover, they could not scrape together anough members to match their opponents properly (this is due in part to the withdrawal of several FC members from YAK (and that is because Rage said so)).

Now, most YAK members have done nothing wrong whatsoever, but my suspicion is that YAK has become a vessel for enemies of the tournament to ruin the fun for everyone else. Why make people show up to battles that are as pitiful as Harbor and Arena today? I turned away nearly 10 players who were ready to go on Streets. For no good reason. The harbor game was delayed by over 35 minutes because of name-faking.

So the tournament is now a battle between two "factions": 1.0 and 212.

Nixo and Hond have agreed to let anyone join their faction for the sake of the tournament. If you want to play, then play! These are some of the last large SWBF games that will ever happen. We could be filling servers to the brim each week; why aren't we? We could be enjoying the tournament, and not seeing it as a source of stress; why aren't we?

YAK's planets will be divided up between 1.0 and 212, and the tournament will proceed. Details, of course, can be worked out later.

Message for FC members:

This is my resignation. I respect all of you, and am proud to have co-led the clan. I consider all of you to be my honest-to-goodness friends, including Rage.

I know the drill: as soon as I post this, Rage will smear me to no end, at least within the confines of the FC website. I will become Public Enemy #1. I will be an irredeemable piece of garbage.

Before you join in on this ritual, and the echo chamber begins, please ask yourself whether you actually agree with it. Who is right here? Are you enjoying your time in FC? Is toeing the FC line worth sacrificing the ability to play in these battles?

Because that's what it will come down to. You will likely be forced to choose between complete non-involvement in the games to come, or being expelled from the clan and added to the traitor list.

It's your choice; make the right one.

I'm asking you all to forgive me for not being forthright about my identity; these tournaments absolutely could not have happened without it. And I'm asking that you help make the rest of our games friendly and fun.

Ask any questions.

Week 4 Verdict post (includes important amendments and states who is banned from Week 5)

Week 4 results
  • 1.0 defends Russia from YAK
    1.0 takes Kamino from YAK
  • 212 takes Harbor from YAK
  • En'ten drops out
  • YAK takes Mos Eisley from Natives
YAK defends Eddie's Kastel (=Docks now) from 1.0
    YAK defends Mustafar from 212

Remarks
1. Let's make this week a good week. It will be easy to beat last week, but let's try to beat all the weeks.

2. I need Hond, Nixo, Shazam to post clan lists. If you already posted in another thread, please repost here anyway. If you were in UEF or En'ten during the weeks in which those clans were active, then your name cannot appear in anyone's clan list. Of course, you can still merc.

3. Remember that Mygeeto is native held now.

4. I'll try my best to make some battles this week.

5. The replacement for Eddie's Kastel is Kashyyyk: Docks.

6. Are any of the following people willing to be added to the official admin list?

--gdh92
--Unit 33
--Dark_Phantom
--Jamman
--Snake
--Nixo
--Hond

7. Any individual who was penalized for Week 4 actions is not allowed to admin future games.

8. Recons stay.

9. If you have anything less than a perfect understanding of the tournament rules as they stand now, ask in here after reading through the rules thread and W4 verdict thread.

10. Here is an archive of the previous W5 thread, which was a mess. http://speedy.sh/der54/w5.zip

If clan reps could please repost attacks and lists in here, that would be nice.

I propose the following amendment. We throw away the current numbers rule, and replace it with the following: All battles will be evenly matched, with the battle count being the amount of players that the least numerous side has. So if YAK has 12 players on, and 212 has 10, the match is a 10v10.

Is this rule better? It's only a proposal at this stage.
