Title: SWBFgamers Server is up on Steam
Post by: Dark_Phantom on May 03, 2020, 06:54:51 AM
I have managed to put a dedicated server called "Mods@SWBFGamers.com" on Steam.  Feel free to play on it if you have the Steam version, put our name out there.

I will freely warn you, it is not as stable as SWBFSpy, and does not work with the disk versions.  SWBFSpy will stay up for the time being to support those versions.

Indeed, SWBFspy won't go away, but we will host servers on the steaming pile of 1.3 beta  ;)

The server worked well when I played earlier with a couple of others. Unfortunately after 2 matches I was booted and that started a 10minute cycle of crashing and freezing. It's lucky I like this game...

I also found out you can't play on Steam and GOG at the same time, it just puts you straight into the one that's running.

Amazing.
The server has been a steaming pile of crap.  And it's all this patch - there's nothing else I know how to do.  At least it reboots when it crashes.

If I'm thinking on this right - It's a server for BF 2004 right?

Honestly, trying to make MP work on a game and using modern server technology... Idk how well that would mix.

They have the source code and released a patch designed to deal with Multiplayer. They had everything they needed, it's not about whether its modern or not. It's about poor quality control and a money grab on May 4th.

You know, you're actually right about that. It's sad that they've put in such low effort for the servers. Hopefully they improve them sometime..

:o Oh Sweet God they added full controller support!!!!!! For years I struggled with xpadder and my xbox360/xbox one controllers and now I dont have to mess that bantha poodoo anymore. I for one see this as a plus ;D I hope they do complete controller support for BF2 classic eventually. SWBFspy is still better than the trash online right now though.

I've never had a problem using controllers on BF2. I've used many controllers without a problem - Xbox 360, Dualshock 3, Dualshock 4, generic bluetooth controllers, PS2 controller with adapter.

Hey guys thanks so much for the server! It's been awesome to play with so man people again. Have you guys considered adding a server without bots? We have been making our own no bot servers but it would be really nice to have a dedicated server. Thanks for all the work you guys do!

I host the BOBclan server and the one SWBFgamers server at the moment. I'm afraid to throw up a third one on the same machine but could try

I'm working on getting GoG and see if we can set up a couple more servers.

Hi Dark_Phantom,

I tried creating my own server via the command line switches as you instructed me via Steam community forum post. I opted to create a batch file and add my entries there. But for some weird reason it doesn't display my server in the server list.

I decided to purchase a second copy of the game on a new account (just for server hosting purposes since it so cheap at the moment). Installed the game on my laptop and hosted a dedicated server via the in game options, and that worked.

So, I'm a bit baffled as to why the batch file method doesn't display my server in the browser, but using the in game option does.

Any thoughts?

Interesting.  So I bought the game on a second account as well so that I could play and host at the same time.  Are you logged into Steam when you do this?  I am running it off my VPS, with the batch file in the same folder as Battlefront.exe, and Steam is running and logged in to the account I bought it on.  I tried doing it multiple ways in offline mode and trying to run it on both machines, and it just didn't work.

If that doesn't help, I can take some screenshots and give insight to my setup.

I couldn't get it to work either, I'm wondering how it checks and whether you can change the folder location for one to trick it.

Yeah, Steam is running in the background. I am logged into the account I bought it on. Batch file is in the same folder as the exe. Whats interesting though is that hosting the server as LAN only works, but no dice for online.

Would appreciate screenshots if you get the time. I'll play around with it some more later today. Thanks for the insight so far.

Ok, to start, here's almost the exact batch file I'm using:
Quote:swbf
echo(%time%) SWBF server started.
battlefront.exe /win /norender /noteamdamage /autonet dedicated /resolution 320 240 /nosound /noaim /tps 57 /gamename Mods@SWBFGamers.com /playerlimit 50 /playercount 1 /bots 25 /difficulty 1 /throttle 3072 /randomize /sideselect bes1r bes2a nab1i kas1c kas2i nab2c rhn1i rhn2c tat2r yav2r tat1i yav1i tat3a
echo(%DATE%) at (%time%) - Server Crashed
goto swbf
It runs an automatic restarter, but shouldn't be too relevant.

I've attached below some snips, the one is just showing that after I start up the server, steam is running, logged in, etc.  The second one is just showing everything - I have the default folder with no mods running Mods@SWBFgamers.com.  Double server attempt folder is just the steam folder copied onto the desktop.  This one is running the BOBserver and has some mods in there, so I know both methods work.

I tried GOG last night on Led's VPS using the same method and it didn't work right.  Galaxy seemed to be running but it didn't show up in the list.  I'm not sure if there's extra configuration in Steam or whether the DRM actually makes it work correctly. However, it isn't confined to folders.  One trick that maybe people could try is running the game normally, alt-tabbing, then using the batch file, but for a VPS with no graphics card this may not work.

I may have to see what my server is doing differently, but it's just a standard setup from NFO that was running a Minecraft server and SWBFspy servers.

Thanks a lot for the batch file configuration.

I've been trying again for the past hour to get this going by hosting via the batch script, but no dice. I even added the batch script string to the Steam Launch Options dialog box and launch it directly from there (that works as well, lol) but doesn't want to display the server.

I'm really baffled as to why your Mods@SWBFgamers.com server shows up in game as you've executed it via the batch file. For interests sake, I tried player hosting a server from my gaming pc and on my laptop where I have my second copy running, instantaneously saw my player hosted server.

So for me, only player hosted and in-game dedicated server hosting works 100%, all my other attempts have come up empty handed. One thing I did pick up though is that the game exe connects to gog.com through port 443. Can you perhaps check and see if that port fully reachable / accessible on your VPS? Because if it is, then I assume that is why it works for you.

I put my laptop in DMZ mode via my router, but I can't seem to open port 443 completely on my end

He is on NFO server, so all ports are open to the wild wild web.
Title: Re: SWBFgamers Server is up on Steam

Right, and port 443 is actually the HTTPS port (generally).
I have to wonder if it's trying to make a secure connection over that port and failing.
Edit: @Stonecold, SWBF1 used to run on ports like 3650 - idk  if they changed that or not, but maybe somebody should watch in wireshark to see if they still use those ports.  A VPS has all the port forwarding stuff open so there's less issues.

Thanks Dark_Phantom.

I'll fire up Wireshark and see if it uses the 3650 port range. Strange on my VPS where I too hosted some SWBF servers on SWBFSpy I noticed on the Windows Firewall the 3650+ range on both TCP and UDP. Even hosting via my VPS it doesn't display the server in the list, so I guess 443 is blocked on my provider that is hosting the VPS in my country. Can't really complain as I got the VPS for free back in the day, even though it's DOG slow, lol.

Anyhow, here's hoping they patch the issues the game currently has. As for server hosting, I'll investigate via Wireshark and see what I can find, but if all else fails, I'll subside and host my dedi via the in-game setting as that at least works fine via my laptop.  :D

AFAIK the new patch doesn't listen to such ports anymore -- at least in SWBF2 it doesn't.

Do we know if they'll ever fix the random crashes and server browser freezes? I hope they will, since the first match I joined in today crashed after the game finished. It says I lost connection to the host, so I don't know if it was my game crashing or if the Host crashed?

Yeah, here's hoping they patch it!

I guess we should make our voice heard on the GOG forum for the game as well because the dev on the Steam forums appear to be inactive there. At least they seem to reply on GOG, so let's pester them there and see if we can push for a patch. Worth a shot  8)

If only we had a dev from that team here, though I'm not sure if that'd be the best idea...

Maybe I'm being a little bit dumb here, but what's the worst they could do to us?
There's a few of us that are actively trying to help and do what we can, through dedicated servers, mods, and trying to patch up what they broke.  Maybe the fact we have a competitor is a problem, but frankly, if they'd fix their crap, it wouldn't matter.  I would gladly use Steam's official online solution more often if I didn't sit through several crashes a session when I use it.
Maybe it's because I like playing on the dedicated servers that aren't officially even cared about (see: many crashes per day).  But the performance when it runs is way better than a lot of self-hosted servers.

Hey there guys!

Today I joined the 21st clan guys for some rounds in the european server. We crashed a couple of times, so I tested some stuff and found out that we crashed after I typed in the teamchat.

This means that typing through it will cause a crash, so in order to avoid it, we have set up a "private" server so that those who join avoid crashing it (we'll try to let know everyone about it so that they can join us there).

Interesting find Anyder!

I'll be on the lookout for the server (if I see it in the browser) and join you guys there. Itching to play again as I've given up for now trying to get my commandline based server in the server browser  :D

Was that a dedicated server? Someone used team chat and I replied to double check in a player hosted server just now.

Yes!

I've been lately checking what happens in both sides:

=> If you join a PC (Self-hosted) Server, you'll be able to use the team chat.
=> If you join a Dedicated Server, the team chat crashes the server. For some reason, when the dedicated server uses teamchat, it's shown in the general chat (if you create a dedicated server with your game). So that's probably why we're crashing.

As to how to fix it, I've been testing with different core files, and gave the same results which means it's hardcoded to the exe itself.

After the last update from Steam/GoG, PC Dedicated works fine so far, so we're switching back to PC-Dedicated the server we were hosting.
If anyone finds out any problem with the servers, please reach us ASAP

Just to add my 2c as well.

Since the multiplayer hotfix patch on 2 October 2020, the game is basically perfect in my opinion now. I jammed a bit on your EU server last night and had a blast against bots.

I then tried hosting my own dedicated server and low and behold, this time round, hosting it via command line worked for the first time. Don't know what I did wrong before though, but just glad that its finally working  :cheer:

The future is bright for SWBF Classic once again. Even though we lost a lot of players since the game's release on Steam and GoG, I doubt a lot of people are aware of the new hotfix patch which fixed the issues with MP. But, I suppose we'll have a surge of players again next year on the May 4th sale (here's hoping).  8)

Hey guys!

As you guys all know, all the MP servers we host on both SWBF1 and SWBF2 Steam-GoG MP platforms are running with community tools. SWBF2 is far more stable than SWBF1 and has an improvised "dedicated server software", however, for SWBF1 there is nothing but a client executable file and a batch file.

The SWBF1 GoG/Steam multiplayer is not stable, and servers will not show up after about 24h, which means they need to be restarted to be shown in the server browser.

Originally I just programmed the batch file to kill the task and restart every day, however, it happened twice that players were in the server and it got restarted. This made me realize that the solution wasn't as efficient (or the most convenient) to solve the issue, so I just cut off that part and restarted myself.

I usually restart servers every day -- I might forget some days, so if you see that our servers are not showing, it is not because we have decided to stop hosting them. Please let us know and we'll restart them ASAP.
