If you want to play the original Star Wars battlefront online here's the basics (most people can skip alot of parts).;
1. Buy a disk
Battlefront is available for download as of 2018 but the CD and DVD version can be found individually or as part of collections in shops or very cheap in online stores like Amazon:
US link - Amazon
UK link - Amazon
Steam - SWBF1 Classic Steam

It should work on Windows XP, vista, 7, 8, and 10 although a few people have problems as with all PC games. It is also available for Mac, but is not compatible with any modern versions of MacOS and the Steam version is not available for Mac (except through Wine)

2. Installation and patch
Installing works like any other game and is simple enough. If you bought a newer DVD version of the game it should be patched to 1.2 (the latest stable patch) and ready to play but the 1.2 patch can be found here if you need it: 1.2 Patches at Disney site.
You can check which version of the game you have by going to either the internet or LAN options in game and checking it says 1.2 in the top corner of the menu screen.

3. Playing online
In November 2012 the Gamespy master server was shut down which means that the standard servers are no longer available. Fortunately there are still ways to play the best one now is using Gamemaster, which is a one off download and installation to replace Gamespy. You can download the autoinstaller here: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1147 and find more information here; http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=7842

Note:  SWBFgamers.com runs SWBFspy.com which has replaced Gameshare for hosting SWBF1 and SWBF2.

Alternatively you can use Tunngle which was the most popular way before Gamemaster. Here is how;
To use Tunngle you need to download the latest version from here; Tunngle site
After you have installed Tunngle (you may need to be an admin i.e. be the main user on your PC) you need to make an account - all the steps should appear on screen. Just make sure that you use a real E-mail address so you that you can verify your account when asked.
When you've installed Tunngle and made an account you need to open Tunngle whenever you want to play battlefront. To join a server search for 'battlefront' in Tunngle, double click the battlefront 1 room then launch your battlefront game as usual and select LAN. There you can take your pick of servers to join and enjoy the game.
More information on using Tunngle is here; http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=5511.0
GameRanger is also supported.  Follow this link to get GameRanger http://www.gameranger.com/

4. Mod maps etc
If you want something a bit different to the standard game there are hundreds of mod maps available for battlefront, most on this site:
Here's how to install them; http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=4668.0
And here's a guide to many of them; http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=310.0

Have fun and feel free to ask any questions.

Star Wars Battlefront (2004 Original) / SWBF days
October 19, 2013, 04:30:30 AM
I've been thinking about this for a while but I finally thought it was worth a try.
There seems to be less and less players on SWBF these days and I think the biggest problem is that although there are still a lot of us active we all go on, see only one or 2 players, and don't bother playing. Unfortunately when everyone does this no one plays and things just get worse.
Tournaments like the ICW prove that we can still have big games but they also have the side effect of taking away activity from the public servers which means that the less regular players lose interest.

My idea is to have 'SWBF days'; One a day a month where we all agree to play and can guarantee good games, hopefully this would get more active players and then we would start to get full servers on those days and better games the rest of the time.
I also included a poll if people think things should be done differently and please post any suggestions you have, I'm sure there's a lot of improvements to be made. :)

What we need;
A server (or better still one in Europe and the US) that goes up a few weeks early and says, for example 'SWBFday-Sunday November 3rd - All welcome'

The most important thing about this plan is advertising, I not only want to see everyone here playing but also old and even new players. I soon plan to write a guide to battlefront from buying the game, to patching, installing Tunngle and joining the server that anyone can link to.

Where we can advertise.
These are the ideas I had, please don't do anything until we agree on dates and a solid plan. We don't want a whole load of dates and everyone getting confused. :)
SWBFgamers - Of course
X-fire groups - In the news section
Clan sites - In the news or guestbook, especially for old and inactive clans
SWBF2 'admin chat' - Hopefully we can persuade server hosts to put a message in the autochat
Friends - Tell everyone you know
Websites that you can write in to - a few gaming sites have 'letter pages' where you can write in.
YouTube - If you see a comment on a SWBF 1, 2 or EA video saying the usual 'I miss playing battlefront' answer them :)
LucasForums etc.- All the SWBF forums

The message we posted in these places would always be the same and something like 'If you want to play the original star Wars: Battlefront again join the servers every last Sunday of the month for big games and visit SWBFgamers.com for details'.

That's all I've come up with so far but it would be ice to get MAC and PS2 players involved.
What does everyone think? Will you join in? Are there huge flaws? Am I being Overambitious and going to fail? :)

Edit; I've done a quick guide for new players. I actually have spare time today.  http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=7195.msg77923#msg77923

Tech Support / Tunngle: Network busy
September 14, 2013, 02:16:36 PM
Does anyone know what causes this error? I can see quite a few of us can't join but I don't know if it's everyone or not.
All I know is;
I left and couldn't re-join.
The count is stuck on 45/255 although I think the number is irrelevant.
It's the same with any other Tunngle room unless it's empty.
Restarting Tunngle doesn't fix it.
It's not just me. :)

Does everyone have this problem?

More rumours from an interview with Ea's boss.
QuoteThe shooter rotation we think about now is Battlefield, Titanfall and Battlefront, and so we like those three brands going forward.
We're working out how we're going to line that up because that's what you'll see from us.

3 years seems like a reasonable cycle to me as long as it gains something interesting each time.

There's a long wait if this stories' accurate. http://metro.co.uk/2013/08/01/star-wars-battlefront-due-summer-2015-3907565/

It makes sense as a date.

Other Games / The Last of us (no spoilers)
June 29, 2013, 08:40:03 AM
The past couple of days I've been playing The last of us and I think it's one of the best games I've played. The story is brilliant, it has great characters and the shooting/stealth gameplay is well balanced and fun.
Has anyone else played it? What did you think? Use spoilers if you discuss the plot please I know how hard it is to avoid spoilers when you have a new game. :)

If anyone has a PS3 and likes the Uncharted games (it's by the same developer) or Zombie games I would definitely recommend it. Just be warned it's extremely violent and has a lot of strong language if you don't like that sort of thing.

Sony just made my day. :)
I was getting worried after Microsoft said that the X-box one needed to be connected to the internet everyday to keep playing and that they would put restrictions on second hand games but Sony have announced that the PS4 going to be the same as the PS3/360 so assuming the games they have are as good as they look they've gained a sale from me.
I also like the video they made that's clearly aimed at Microsoft. :)

I just noticed that it says at the bottom of the forum page that there were 168 people on at once;
QuoteMost Online Today: 20. Most Online Ever: 168 (18-05-2013, 12:24:01)
What happened that I missed? I'm assuming it's a glitch since there was no huge number of posts. I thought the old record would never be broken. :)

Tech Support / Error message when posting here
April 27, 2013, 08:24:52 AM
I've just been talking to Comfrost and he says he's having problems posting here. Whenever he does he gets this message;
QuoteThe connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check you computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

He only has the problem on SWBFgamers and it's the same problem with a slightly different message on Firefox and IE.
If anyone has any ideas to fix it I'm sure they would be appreciated. :)

SWBF1 Modding / Visible AI names?
April 17, 2013, 10:26:56 AM
Is it possible to get AI's names to hover above their heads in singleplayer or online like other players? I know they have unique scores at the end of a match and thought it would be nice to get be able to target a specific AI who's just killed me. :)

General / Dedicated server hosting site
March 31, 2013, 07:22:02 AM
Saw this while looking for something else;
https://artofwarcentral.com/game-servers/order.aspx?server=Battlefront-Servers

They seem to support dedicated servers for alot of games and can host from US or Europe. It seems a bit expensive for one server but it might be of interest to someone and they support mods etc.
Has anyone used them before? Looking at google there's a few complaints but no more than I would expect about a big company.
#52
A few people have talked about getting battlefront on steam etc in the past so I thought a thread where anyone could post ideas. I think it's unlikely to happen but worth a try. :)

Apparently Steam only accepts request from publishers/developers they won't ask them for a game.

GOG has a section to vote for games you would like added here; https://secure.gog.com/wishlist/games#search=battlefront

Origin is the other big store I can think of and has The Old Republic and Lego Star Wars but unlike the other 2 I don't think it has much interest in older games.

I've done something very bad and ordered battlefront 2, I know that is treachery. :)
I've actually had it on PS2 for 6 or 7 years and don't like it as much as number 1 but it's still quite a good game so I thought I would try it online to see what it was like so, as I know a few people around here play it, I was wondering if anyone had any tips on good servers, mods, websites etc. Is glitching a problem or any mods like radar? Who around here plays? I know most things about the units and that gametoast is the main site but any other help would be appreciated so I can enjoy it straight away. :)
Oh, and I'm not leaving battlefront 1 completely. :)

General / Gamespydev response :(
November 12, 2012, 08:25:07 AM
I E-mailed gamespy and have actually got a response from a real person but it's not good....

Hi Glyn,

Lucas Arts no longer supports this title and as a service provider to Lucas Arts we're obligated to follow their directions and have disabled this game on our end. You may want to reach out to Lucas Arts.

AFC/

The strange thing is Lucasarts hasn't changed their posistion on SWBF in a few years as far as I know so this doesn't mean much just that gamespy probably won't help.

Tech Support / Chat problem
October 02, 2012, 12:57:32 PM
I've been having a strange problem with chat recently where everything I type comes up twice. For example typing 'hi' comes up as;
{PLA}gdh92: hi
{PLA}gdh92: hi

I reset my game and internet but it still happens and I can't find a fix (I have no mods installed). The even stranger thing is it only happens on {PLA}cloudcity fastspawn server. if I join another server including CFC escape with people in it seems fine.
Also when I joined the fastspawn server it said gdh92 has killed teammate then the same again which I know can happen but then it said I had killed a player on the other team with a mine before I started playing. The teammate kill happened straight away in the next server I went to aswell.

Am I missing something obvious or is this some weird glitch where I'm taking up multiple player slots?

General / Star wars: First Assault game
October 02, 2012, 09:49:34 AM
I was going to add this to my last post but a big red box told me I shouldn't :)
I read this today and thought it might be of interst, obviously the second part's just rumours;
'Just to make you feel even more depressed Star Wars: First Assault has been revealed to be an Xbox Live Arcade game. The title was originally discovered via a trademark filling, but rather than a reboot of Rebel Assault, or any other big budget endeavour, it's speculated to be the remains of Spark Unlimited's work on Battlefront III.'

Edit: Here's a picture:

General / New Star Wars game?
August 29, 2012, 08:49:05 AM
http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/910005-star-wars-first-assault-outed-by-trademark
It could be nothing or it could be a good Star Wars flight Sim. It's only a few leaked reports so far but it looks like a game called First Assault is being worked on so hopefully we can go back to the 'golden era' when we had new games all the time like Jedi Knight, Battlefront and KOTOR. :)
Also if any one hasn't played Knights of the Old Republic 2 for a while the final cut content mod which restores almost everything missing has been released. Just google Deadly Stream or TSLRCM 1.8. It's worth getting.

If you want to take part in the SWBF leaderboards please sign up below either as an individual or as a team of 4. Hopefully we can get a good number of players and have some good games. The rules are below.

Rules and outline:
The swbf leaderboards tournament will be split into two sections one for individuals and one for teams of four and will start on September 1st. Thanks to Led/Buckler it will be hosted by SWBFgamers.

Individuals:
The first 20 (I'm optimistic) people to join will be be given random numbers to order them in the scoreboard. If you want to move up in the rankings you need to challenge someone within 3 places of you(for example number 7 can challenge 6, 5 or 4). If you win you take their place and they move down one. New players have to start at the bottom and work up.

Every player is expected to accept 2 challenges a week but there is no maximum. Admins will oversee any matches where a player requests it but both players can agree to no admins before matches. If you want screenshots from the other player you can also arrange this before the match. There would be a time limit of 20 minutes per match for individuals (then first kill wins for ties). There will be no CP bleed (meaning reenforcements will only go down with kills but CPs can be captured. Ticket count will be 15-15.

Teams:
Teams must have 6 registered members and can change only one member a week. Time limit is 30 minutes per match. Other rules are the same as individuals except teams can only challenge within two places and there will be CP bleed. Ticket count will be 250-250.

Both:
The defender would choose the era and map from Cloud city and Mos Eisley with the condition that 2 people cannot play the same map twice in a row. The attacker would choose the team. Gameplay would be capturing cps but no special units for the sake of balance, there will be no AI.

Rules:
1.Screenshots must be taken of all scores.
2.No mods (minimap always on, transparency etc.) Only crosshairs and player skins are allowed.
3.No cussing/swearing
4.No wall hacking
5.Remember this just a game so be nice and play fairly with other players.
6.No challenging the same player more than 2 weeks in a row.
7.No special units (Jets, Wookie or Droideka)
8.No tanks
9.If an admin is requested for a match the match must start within 10 minutes of the proposed time. It will  then start regardless of how many players are present.
10.Matches are based on the position of the players before the match not the leaderboard. Example: If player 5 beats 4 he is then out of range of player 8 even if the leaderboard has not been updated yet. Its not as confusing as that sounds.
11. Challenges must be accepted within 6 days and played 2 days after that or you will be moved below the challenger.
12.Any arguments over matches must be posted the same day

Penalties for breaking these rules will normally take the form of a place drop.
