Title: SWBF on Windows 8.1--has anyone done it?
Post by: Led on March 25, 2015, 04:08:14 PM
Hi SWBFgamers,

Has anyone been able to run SWBF on Windows 8.1?

If so, please share what you did to get it running.

I can play Star Wars Battlefront on Windows 8.1.
I did not install the traditional method (http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=8881.msg94686#msg94686).
I never tried to play without compatability mode having had problems with Windows 7, but I use Windows XP Service Pack 2.
I use BattleBelk's resolution changer--although there are black lines on each side of the screen during the menus they disappear while in game.

Installed it today infact.. I used a 1.2 dvd that came with Starwars Fan Favorites along with Battlefront II and SW Republic Commando. (I have installed GameShare multiplayer patch, but that shouldn't matter, just wanted to be specific).

I am running it on a Windows 8.1 64bit HP Laptop.

Did you do anything special?  Or just let it auto-install ?

The only option I did in auto install was choose automatic setup (You can choose custom install in install shield).
So yes, just auto install.

I did not however choose to install GameSpy app, to be even more specific (though I doubt this would affect the working order in any way).

Edit:
I forgot to mention that me, my brother and my friend have had to go directly to GameData folder to run Battlefront.exe (we all have Windows 8.1 computers).

Any shortcut you make on your desktop fails to work as battlefront either crashes or stops executing and hangs before the load screen can appear.

To further summarize; I auto-installed, and shortcut files make battlefront crash. Run battlefront manually.

That's rather quite unique.

I myself run an 8.1 Windows laptop, using SWBF (with the GameMaster exe) and the shortcut on my desktop worked perfectly. I actually used it recently to attend my final Clan Night with Alpha.

But yes, I have it working on mine. Not sure if I used compatibility mode for SWBF1 or not. I know I for sure used it with SWBFII (had to reinstall SWBFII because Norton thought the GameMaster exe was a virus...).

SWBF1 Launcher for resolution changer is working for me as a shortcut.

Ah, I haven't bothered using the resolution change at all (partly because I rarely touch the game these days). I always have the 1024x768 resolution on my 1600x900 laptop screen, though if I ever get back into it, I might use BattleBelk's resolution changer.

Well I would like to add that I also play SWBF on a windows 8.1, but if I recall correctly I installed it onto the windows 8 operating system and my computer was then later updated to the 8.1 operating system. (And it didn't affect my game at all.) Both the original shortcut, as well as a custom shortcut (/nointro) work for me. I have never tried using the custom resolution launcher. I probably chose the custom install, as that is how I usually like to install my games. I also do not use compatibility mode.

Try removable disks, however update the game first!  ;)

I use the best of pc version installed normally. Just put battlefront.exe in compatibility mode for windows xp or else you will get really weird floaty hover vehicles.
