This is a small project that I was working on for most of today. This does not mark my return to the SWBF1 modding 'scene'; rather, it is a small project that I was working on previously that I completely forgot about and decided to work on today, and got it into a playable state.

With that said, I present to you...

Tranquan: Tech Centre
a SWBF2 custom map by Skyhammer_216
converted to SWBF1 by Jedikiller

This is a small map, set in a military base-ish environment. It features tight spaces interspersed with moderately sized rooms. It is mostly made out of custom models and the like. It can most likely be compared to the shipped Tantive IV map with SWBF2, except not as hard on the eyes. I selected it to convert as I was impressed with how much I enjoyed playing the map in SWBF2.

Sky gets all of the credit here- I just convert. He did a good job making it compatible, though I doubt that was his intention. I'll go ahead and copy his credits list here:
QuoteLord_Bandu - dantooine trees
DarthD.U.C.K. - resized CW assets, working Thule cannon
Caleb1117 - some props used on Tranquan
Pandemic, Teancum - CW assets
and if you're interested in checking out the original map, here it is on SWBFFiles: http://starwarsbattlefront.filefront.com/file/Dark_Space_Map_Outtakes;104501

Get the download here!

MPCGamers Tournament 1 (T.1)
April 17, 2010

This time, we're trying something new! Instead of having Mac vs. PC again, since we all know who wins, we're going to compete to see who is the best SWBF player around! This is how it works: you are automatically placed onto a team- you fight the opposing team, and we keep records of all the points earned by everyone and add them up at the end to determine the best player. That way, everything's fair. There's no way to place yourself on one team or another, and there is no unbalanced teams or anything like that.

Scoring will work like this:
1 kill = 1 point
1 death= -.5 point
1 CP= 1.5 points

So if you get 20 kills, 5 deaths, and 1 CP, then your score is 20-2.5+1.5. This comes out to be 19.

Here's all the essential information you need to know:

Location:
Led's DC server (IP: redacted)
Date and Time:
April 17th, 2010 at 3PM CST- this is 8 PM GMT!
Maps:
Eddie's Italia- CSI9- Click here
Tatooine: Fueling Station- DDF2- Click here
Abridon City- ABR1- Click here
Dude, Where's My Kart?- DWMK- Click here

I hope to see everyone there! May the best man win!

Tech Support / PHP Coders?
March 15, 2010, 09:35:28 PM
Anyone here have PHP experience? I'm working on doing a small project for school and I may need some help along the way with a few things. Mainly, the questions will be about the proper functions to use in certain situations. I have so far been able to debug all my errors myself. :D

My first question is this: let's say I have the user list off their favorite animals. The list is displayed on their user page. I want to be able to click the name of the animal and have it search for other users who have the same animal listed in their profiles. I already have a search function implemented, so that does not need to be created. I am asking how to create these links without manually setting each of them up on the user's page. I'm not sure if I've explained this adequately- please ask for clarification should it be needed.

My second question is this: does a PHP session stay within the file, or is it strictly contained to the <?php> tags, as in each enclosure is a completely separate session? Like if I called my database at the start of the file, established some variables, etc., then closed the tags, and later reopened them further down the file, could I call variables established in the start of the file? It will be a real hassle to design something nice-looking if I have to make PHP print everything :(

Hope some of you can assist me with these! Thanks! :)

Scummies / Vacation!
March 12, 2010, 04:04:54 PM
hay guys-

I'm heading to Florida today (spring break yay). I'll be there until next Saturday mid-day.

I will have internet access, but I won't be able to get on any games or anything like that (except maybe BF). It's supposed to be not nice out where we're going, so I'll likely be spending most of my time working on a coding project or something instead of on the beach where I should be

I will, however, be driving from TX to FL today and tomorrow (hi Alabama people!), so I'll be unavailable then. If the site goes down or something, I will get it up ASAP. That should not happen, however.

Podcast peoples- we need to have it on Friday or Sunday if you want to do it next week. I still might not be able to attend, but it will be more likely.

The rest of you- enjoy your vacation from me for the next day or so and partial vacation Sunday-Saturday! :P

Valve has announced Steam and all of their own games will be coming to the Mac platform in April! Everything they make will also be coming to the Mac as a day-one release.

Should you already own a game, you will be able to obtain a Mac version for free. Multiplayer is integrated. Everything is pretty much exactly the same.

Valve is also allowing publishers who partner with them to distribute Mac games through the service.

This is a huge day for Mac gaming. What do you think about it?

Other Games / Mass Effect 2
March 07, 2010, 06:16:31 PM
Have any of you played Mass Effect 1 or 2?

I recently beat 2- it was quite possibly one of the best games I have ever played. I'm planning on writing a review of it for the blog, even though I know I'm late to the party there :/

Anyway, have any of you played it? What did you think about it? How did you play through and what choices did you make?

Platform Wars Three- PW.3
January 30th, 2010 at 3:00 CST

That's right folks, it's time for everyone's favorite site tournament- Platform Wars 3! The only tournament on the site that lets the rival platforms battle against each other for a show of strength and ultimately skill at a computer game!

Last time, the PCs won both times! Is it time for the Macs to finally win a few? Not likely, since PC has many more people!

Anyhow, here's your essential informations:

Time and Date:
Saturday, January 30th, 2010 at 3:00 CST (that's 4 EST, 2 MST, and 1 for you West Coasters)
Location:
Led's server
Maps:

May the best platform win! Spread the word to all your friends online- this should be the biggest one yet!  :tu:

I hope to see you all there.

Hey SWBF mappers and modders:

MPCGamers.com is proud to announce its SWBF Mapping and Modding Winter 2009-2010 Competition!

The contest will be based off of a common theme. Maps and mods will be created around this theme. The users of the site will vote on their favorite map and map/mod combination. Entries will also be judged by the staff using a rubric, which will detail what gets you credit. User vote and this will combine to determine the winners in each category.

If you submit your entry in the single category, such as Map or Mod and you win, you will receive a Steam game that costs up to ten dollars. This is the only way we have of doing prizes without collecting personal information. If you are a Mac user, then we will have to work out something comparable, although I doubt there will be many as Windows is required to mod.

If you create both a map AND a mod which integrate, then you will be in a separate category and eligible for a Steam game under 20 dollars, which opens up a lot more possibilities. Again, if you are a Mac, we will have to work something out.

The rules of the contest are as follows:

  • You are not allowed to work with anybody else, unless it is for munging purposes and the munger is not participating in the contest (like me)
  • The map or mod must follow a Winter or Snow theme. Holiday themes are also acceptable. There are assets for these on Gametoast, if you need some.
  • If you make a map and a mod, then they must be integrated. Making both will put you into a separate category.
  • The map or mod must be an original creation. You are allowed to use assets from other modders, but you may not submit a map or part of a map you have already made.
  • Maps and mods must be completed by January 31st, 2010. Voting will begin after that.
  • You are not allowed to recruit support for your map or mod in the voting. If you do that, you will be disqualified from winning the prize.
  • You must have a Steam account if you are a PC to receive the prize.
  • All maps must be hosted in the MPCGamers Download Center in the specific Contest category. If the map or mod is over 64 mb, then it must be hosted on Filefront and the link must be posted in the download center.
  • You must be a member of MPCGamers.com in order to participate in the contest.

Judges are myself, Hardcore, Droideka, and .invertus.

If you are interested in participating or have any questions, please post below! We look forward to seeing your entries. :)

Tech Support / Mobile GPUs
December 12, 2009, 11:21:35 AM
Hey hardware people-

I was looking into purchasing myself a laptop that I can carry around with me that would play games on it. Unfortunately, the mobile GPU labeling system does not accurately reflect their power, as a card with the same number is different for desktops and laptops.

Also, I don't know what are good laptop brands- any suggestions? Under $1000?

Thanks!

SWBF1 Modding / Felucia: Marshland (Delta1 Released!)
September 18, 2009, 11:02:24 PM
Hi guys-

Today I have some exciting news- I converted Felucia!

Well, not entirely... there are a few things that still have to be touched up, like localization and water. However, the conversion is essentially bugless, it looks almost exactly like BFII Felucia, and it's in a completely fun and playable state right now!

I don't want to release this alpha, but rest assured I will work on it ceaselessly throughout the weekend and you will have a releasable version sooner rather than later.

For your viewing pleasure, I have included screenshots of the conversion:

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy the final version of the map!

Inspired by the keyboard technique thread, this one asks how you hold your mouse.

This is a listing of a few of the most common ways people place their hand on the mouse: http://www2.razerzone.com/MouseGuide/html/palmgrip.php

I am a palm-grip person. How do you hold it?

Other Games / The LucasArts-Steam Thread
September 05, 2009, 06:44:56 PM
So as you probably know, Lucasarts is releasing a bunch of their back catalog on Steam.

Today, they released KotOR, which I highly recommend if you do not already have it (PC only I assume). The Macs are probably still dealing with $50 prices like Battlefront is :/

Previously released were:
Armed and Dangerous™
Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis
Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
LOOM™
Star Wars Battlefront® II
Star Wars Republic Commando®
Star Wars Starfighter™
The Dig®
Thrillville®: Off the Rails™

I'll try to update this every time they release something new.

Other Games / Other Games Screenshots
August 28, 2009, 08:35:33 PM
It seems we have a thread for most games we officially support for screenshots, but how about one for games we don't have a forum for?

I'll start off the thread with a picture I took earlier in Crysis. Definitely impressive, even at medium settings.

Click here to view (it's rather large).

SWBF 1 and 2 Tournaments / Platform Wars Redux- War 2
August 19, 2009, 06:58:02 PM
PLATFORM WARS REDUX
WAR 2

Since the beginning of time, man has always had options. What food to eat, which place to live, which language to speak... you get the idea. And with such freedom to choose, there inevitably comes a conflict. Those who chose one option are always convinced that their choice was the superior, and constantly wage a war of words with those who chose differently.

And so, each side thinks their platform is much better than all the others. And inevitably... there is conflict.

Will you fight for your side once more in the unceasing rivalry between the Macs and the PCs? The PC empire emerged victorious last time- will the Macs strike back? Will the mighty Microsoft empire crumble in our little battlefield? We shall see...

DATE OF THE BATTLE:
September 12th, 2009
TIME OF THE BATTLE:
8:00 PM EST
LOCATION OF THE BATTLE:
Buckler/Led's Direct Connection Server (IP will be announced later)
LOCATIONS OF THE FIGHTING:
Cloud City, Citadel, Utapau (uta1), The Maze (maz1), Airfight (air1)

GEOCITIES STYLE also my writeup sucks sorry

Tech Support / Question about PCI-E 1.0 and 2.0
August 19, 2009, 03:45:39 PM
Hey tech peoples-

If I were to go pick up a PCI-E 2.0 graphics card (let's say this one), would it work in my PCI-E 1.0 motherboard? And if so, what would I be sacrificing in terms of performance, or anything else really?

Thanks!
