Title: Is SWBF dead?
Post by: Black Water on April 02, 2016, 09:07:09 PM
It's been a while since I've played SWBF, so I'm curious. I recall logging into SWBF a few times last year, however, no one was ever active during those times. Has it changed?

If not [dead], what are the majority of players composed of? Europeans? Americans? What's the typical number of players per day?

I'm about to be finished with my first year of college, so I'm looking forward to playing again for a while if there's still some activity.

Its not dead. Some of us veteran players are around. Usually the weekend is a good time to catch a good crowd. Time of day varies though...

So, around 8 players at its best? Darn, that's depressing.

Any info on European/American ratio?

depends on the time of day.  Saturday afternoon is about 50/50.  Weekdays in the evening, almost all US players.

I seem to remember once that led said crowds make crowds and I think this is the opposite. There's still a fair few active players but if they don't see anyone in the server they don't join and that's just a circle.  :(

I can't say much, I haven't played much for the past year but I'm limited to the games I can play because I've had a couple of operations on my wrist so give me a break (no pun intended)  :)

I'm sure ICW6 will bring some players back.

There was in fact a lot last year in ICW5.

I guess there's another question to that, however. People who don't see others in-game and don't play, how long are they going to keep checking on the website for tournament updates? Them how long are they going to hang around at all if nothing is going on?
In my opinion, SWBF is dead. But that's not the word I wanted to use...

And if it's not dead, it is doomed to die.

Maybe temporarily, but a lot of them will go inactive again when it ends.

Dead in terms of multiplayer competition and big servers? Perhaps, but SWBF is bigger than that. The way I see it, this game is not completely dead until all the pro modders go inactive. Tournaments like the ICW would likely not exist or be anywhere near as fun if it weren't for all the cool mod maps made over the years. So multiplayer might be way less active these days, but as long as modders are releasing maps and there is an active forum community, in my opinion I'd say SWBF is alive. But if you mostly only play for the big servers then yeah it's not what it used to be anymore. There is a lot of nostalgia to this game though which is why many players keep coming back.

True, but we are not helpless in this regard. For example, regular public games with set times (outside of a tournament context) could be organized rather easily, but are not. Historical evidence shows that this works.

During and shortly after the ICW6 is an ideal time to set such a thing in motion, while we have the attention of those players who don't regularly play outside of ICW's.

Battlefronts far from dead, as long as there's servers up and 2 players use them it will keep going and that's without the sp aspect.

I tried that with swbf days but that just seemed to taper off. I think there's a system like that could work but it's not easy to get everyone together. As you say maybe it's time someone gave it a try.

You basically described me. I only play SWBF1 if there's an ICW happening. However I'm still around and checking the forums daily even when there's not one.

Certainly! And those 2-3 months will be fun!

That is indeed the sad truth. There will be a day where NOBODY will play it. The only way I'd see of making this delayed is by illegally remaking SWBF to the latest technology with a lot of advertising to get it ahead of EA. But of course the developers would be enjoying their punishment for copyright before that could possibly happen. I think when Phobos' TWD mod begins releasing to the public it'll help keep a few people coming back to see more but when it's ended things will probably die down again. Hell, it's 12 years old, it's had a long lifespan to still be this active.

When I said it was doomed to die, I was really only thinking about Multiplayer. I have a feeling Gamemaster won't be staying up forever, either. I don't know enough about the deal with that, but will the owner shut it off if usage continues to drop?

Gamemaster also has the support of other games, so  I think it will be a long while.  Additionally, the source code is released, so we can potentially make our own if we needed.

A game this old doesn't really get new players, but this website will continue as long as I do, which I hope is still a good number of years  ;)

Led, i will believe every second of that, and I will be impressed when it happens. :P
