The new Star Wars movie trailer is coming out Friday.
I figured we need a thread about this. (It's true, Google it.)

Let's hope that they leave out any cheesy/childish moments like they have put in Rebels...

Agreed.

Eh, I'm just curious about what the plot will be. I have heard rumors that it is a movie about Obi-Wan, or that an Obi-Wan stand alone will come out later. Chances are I'm going to be slightly bored with the new movies. Movies are always so predictable. I hate predictability. I really hope Disney does a good job.

I'm really excited, and also anxious. I've watched the movies so many times that I've lost count.

I spent all of middle school imagining I was in the Star Wars universe.
(I'm a super huge Star Wars fan)

They better not ruin it.

I've heard a bunch of rumoured plot details, each being progressively more wacky.
No matter what, it can be no worse than TPM.

I myself am a tad skeptical towards the new film (like Carbon, I too hate predictability in films). Nonetheless, I do hope that Disney does a good job. First impressions are most important, heavily so if you are adding a new trilogy lineup to a worldwide popular film franchise.

While I won't deny that the Stormtroopers look fantastic, it is to clearly a J.J. Abrams film.... you'd never find such moving and shaking cameras in any of the other SW films as we saw with the Millennium Falcon's flight sequence at the end.

Soupir....

Am I the only one who's left feeling both elevated but mostly... "meh"..?

It looks enjoyable, it's just going to also be one of those feelings like... "It's not really Star Wars but it's SOOOO very Star Wars"

I'l admit, it feels....weird.

It has Star Wars in it, but to me it feels wayyy too much like a really well done fan-made film (that lightsaber sold me on that thought).

The little bouncing droid was odd, but nonetheless, it's definitely Star Wars to an extent. I don't have too high of expectations for the film after that, but like everyone else is saying, it feels "meh".

Crossguard lightsaber sold it.

I'm still optimistic, considering this is our very first tiny glance at what we can expect from the film.

Thats one of the biggest killers for me. Just looks like your usual over epic movie of today. The rolling r2, the xwings across the water, the lightsaber.
I love the sith, but it looks as though this one will just be a joke like that orc in the hobbit. Ive always been about the movies, and not the EU, which is what this movie seems to be geared towards more.

I mean that falcon shot was do able, but even that hulking slow bottom speeder looked stupid. Sadly though its whay i expected (although they arnt making the movie just for my viewing pleasure)

First thought is that visually it all looks amazing, my second thought is that's a stupid looking and impractical lightsaber.

I'm a fan of JJ Abrams, and although the second Star Trek film wasn't amongst his best I think he's a good choice for Star Wars, it's nice to see that he's kept the look of a 'lived in' universe from the original films where it's not all about shiny new spaceships but things like a bulky old(?) speeder bike and battered helmets so it seems more realistic. Relatively of course. :)

Overall I'm looking forward to it and this was a good advert, if a bit early.

You guys get it. I have the exact same thoughts you guys do. It almost is like fan film quality, not a bad thing. I almost felt meh about the teaser. I need to see more or they probably should have shown it later when more was done.

Leaning more towards that thought as well, actually. They should have polished it up more before releasing it, because right now it looks fan film quality.

First impressions are normally most important when making a film like this with such a grand scale fanbase.

The reason why a lot of the CGI doesn't look great is because I think the CGI is still being developed. If I remember correctly, there was a huge difference between the teaser trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy, and the final movie scenes. Everything except that opening desert shot looked fine to me, anyways.

Also, of course they didn't show much at all, that's why it's called a teaser trailer  ;)

Overall, a good trailer. I kinda like the little crossguard on the lightsaber, but maybe it's making it too obvious that it's supposed to be a laser sword  ::)

Well at least now there are a few things we are going to see in the movie that were likely originally EU.
I for one am still bothered by Disney not supporting the EU.

I love the shot of the X-wings flying over the water. So far (in my opinion) they haven't ruined Star Wars.

Ya'll have your standards set too high.

This isn't the worst thing to happen to the franchise, it's a 80+ second teaser for a film due to release a year from now.

Good point, Unit. I hadn't really looked at it that way, so now it's nice for me to realize that they... we all still have some time.

Even better, my American friends will probably be happy if Spike decides to do a set of their long Star Wars series marathons before the seventh is released. I love it when Spike makes those marathons.

I loved watching those marathons when my family had Spike. :P

But yeah, there's still probably lots of undeveloped stuff they have to do. This was probably them tossing what they had together just to give their fanbase some actual footage aside from teaser photos. Nonetheless, that cross-guard does through me off on that lightsaber, it makes the whole thing look too fan-made at that point.

X-Wings on the water though does remind me of a scene from one of the EU works (forget where its from, could've simply been artwork for all I know, I just remember seeing a similar scene on Wookieepedia somewhere).

I don't get the negativity to the lightsaber crossguard at all. I'd say it's quite practical. After all, how many Jedi and Sith have lost hands? One tactic in a sword fight is to aim down the hilt, delimbing your opponent, and the crossguard prevents that.

I don't think the hilt is the problem, the two metal bits of the cross would work well to stop a weapon being slid down the outside but then it adds to smaller lightsabers coming out of the hilt which in most positions would be more of a risk of catching your own arm. If it just had the metal to block lightsabers it would be practical. If the metal won't block lightsabers then the smaller lightsabers will be cut off anyway...

I can't believe I actually thought about it that much but at least the teaser's doing it's job. :)

What mystifies me is how Obi-Wan pulled that off on Grievous not once but twice.

Indeed they did, Lady Lumiya if I remember her name correctly did wield a lightwhip. She was around during the EU, I believe she was around during 100-130 ABY (when Cade Skywalker was a Jedi/pirate).

She was in lots of comics and books, but if that didn't interest you, The Clone Wars also featured lightwhips if I remember correctly, so they aren't completely out of the canon.

Aha, that's it.  Lady Lumiya was Legacy of the Jedi series I think.  30ish years after A New Hope.
