I have a vid on youtube how to setup the dns # using the network startup disc that comes with purchase of network adapter *fat ps2* or bundled with the *slim* ps2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQ_YnBdJ4rM
thats basically all that has to be done to get online for ps2 other than pluging in the lan cable to your router/cable modem/dsl box to the port on the back of the ps2. what ever the client has. please note currently it only works in usa. there are no dnas servers for eu or japan right now.

You can use the "hosts" option to get SWBFSpy Working. Check it here: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=10542.0

Star Wars Battlefront Multiplayer over the Internet no longer uses GameSpy as a host.
Instead it uses GameMaster. All you have to do is download a new Battlefront exe and put it into a specific folder.

What folder, you ask? Easy! Your Battlefront game is in your LucasArts folder.
C:\ProgramFiles\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData
GameData! That's the folder! Move your new exe into there.

Where do you get this new exe? Right here at SWBFgamers.com

Thanks. But it tells me I'm missing binkw32.dll from my computer. How do I fix that? I have the steam version of the game if that makes any difference.

Yeah, ur game is located here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Star Wars Battlefront II\

Go to the GameData folder and replace the old exe for the one u just downloaded

I got it. Sometimes I'm dumb when it comes to things like this. I have to say, it's a very dead community. No one seems to be playing. Where is the biggest community at? I've only ever played game ranger and there are always people on there. So, I'm guessing that's where most people are. Game Ranger is awesome, I just hate that no one seems to like playing hero assault vanilla.. sighh. I miss the ps2 days.

Right now people arent online cause many of them dont know about SWBFSpy, so we need to tell them about the new masterserver.

Self hosted servers should work on the new Master server as long as they have updated their game with the lasted Client patch.

They will need to do portforwarding as usual though.

I have updated the thread so that nobody confuses the files (I've had several emails from people who had mistakenly installed the server file)

Also, Klexmer (old friend of mine) as been so kind to send me the french file.
I'm gonna attach it here, and add it to the main post

There's no need to "unistall" anything.
Gameshare was just a patch for the game so that it would redirect to the new masterserver, so all u gotta do is download the new exes and replace them

EDIT: Autoinstaller works like a charm. Well done!

Just got it working, looks like no one online atm but functions like a charm. That said, Gameranger is no longer functioning. It opens and lists the servers as it should, but when I attempt to join a game it opens SWBFII then gives me the "busy" pop up for 15 seconds-ish then says "could not connect". Now I don't really like gameranger to be honest, but since SWBFspy's servers seem empty for now, its more or less my only option. Please tell me how to either revert my patched copy of battlefront II to normal, or tell me how to change it to allow me to use GR, if possible.

Simply replace the SWBFspy edited exe with your original one, and all will be back to normal.

If you don't feel like switching back all the time, you can leave the original exe as battlefrontii.exe and call the new SWBFspy exe something like battlefrontii-swbfspy.exe, then make a short cut from the battlefrontii-swbfspy.exe to your desktop, then start the game from that shortcut when you want to use the internet master servers and start up GameRanger as usual.

GameMaster doesnt work with GR, so SWBFSpy won't either. you need the original exe file, what you could do if you don't have it, if you have the game on steam, firstly take everything you want from GameData: your SWBFSpy exe, your addon folder (if you have mods installed), and anything really.
then go to Steam Library, right click on SWBF2, go to Properties, go to Local, then go to Verify game cache. this will do a scan of your game and it will add back any deleted files (if you don't have the original exe file) however, reason I say for you to take addon folder and SWBFSpy exe and anything else is because, the scan will get rid of them sadly. so if it's on your desktop or downloads folder or anyhere it's fine as long as it's not on GameData.

good luck :)

You might want to make the patches downloadable without registration. Also is there anyway we can draw players away from Gameranger?

We won't stop someone from hosting the files elsewhere, but we do want players to register here so that they know where they can come for help and can verify the authenticity of the files.

If registration is too inconvenient, then installing a patched exe is probably not convenient either.   ;)

You will notice that we do not spam you with emails and there are no advertisements that litter most game sites--so free registration is a very small price to pay.

The Gameranger issue is tricky.  The GR developer is a member of our site, and has been very helpful to us (and players of many old games).  Some players will prefer GR, but perhaps the best option is to let players know they have a choice and that SWBFgamers is committed to keeping SWBFspy operating for 10-20 years into the future.

Well the masterseerver generally provides servers with a better connection compared with GR

Yes, I concur.

I just want to keep Scott Kevill (GR developer) on our side, and not give the impression that we are competing with him.

SUSPICIONS ABOUT THE PATCH:

Unfortunately results have not been consistent but I do have some more evidence I can pour over to see if there is a clue about what exactly is happening between client and server.  I will try to run some tests tonight.

SUSPICIONS ABOUT THE PATCH:

 • It works to fix your windows registry if for some reason it is missing and you get the CDKey error
 • It does not always work if others have used the patch too and are already on the same server, then you need to run the CDKey.exe file OR manually change the key in the registry by at least 1 digit

Unfortunately results have not been consistent but I do have some more evidence I can pour over to see if there is a clue about what exactly is happening between client and server.  I will try to run some tests tonight.

Changing the registry only works for disk versions by the way. I own both and found the Steam app ID for BF2 (6060) and it showed nothing of use... I believe editing the registry only even works because GameSpy shutdown, so there's nothing to verify the key is valid.

Yes.   Please tell us how you are hosting--with the dedicated server software, or through the game (like the steam version of the game or game CD).

Also, tell us what patch you are using for SWBFspy--

Well as long as you load your game up with "Battlefront SWBFSpy.exe" for now on (or whatever you may have renamed it to) then if you select multiplayer it should pop up with a bunch of servers.

For some reason when I replaced my executable with the patched SWBFspy version, it wouldn't launch the game, saying its "missing the executable" So I renamed the patched exe to "battlefrontII.exe", game now launches and runs reliably, I can connect to the SWBFspy servers and play. That said, for whatever reason, I can no longer connect to servers through gameranger. I can log in to GR and join lobbies, but when I launch Battlefront 2 via 'join' button it just says "connecting" for 15 seconds, then says "connection to host could not be established". To make matters worse, I switched back to the vanilla version of the executable and the problem persists, not sure why. I was under the impression that it was possible to use both SWNFspy and GR simultaneously. Either I'm missing something or I made a mistake of some sort.

You cant use the patched version for both.

Hi, I'm new to this site and really just created an account to play online so sorry if I'm resurrecting a dead post but every time I try and load up the game with the new exe it opens like it wants to start the game but then doesn't go any further and freezes. I'm on win 7 if it makes any difference.

Dont worry, people can post in this thread anytime.
Make sure u are running the new exe, and not the old one. If u freeze it means u are not using the patch.

Hey all, I have a friend having trouble getting Steam to connect to the game after they replaced the executable. They bought the game through steam and would like to see the overlay and record hours, but it appears Steam can't find the game now. Any idea how to fix?

EDIT: This is Battlefront 2 that we're talking about.

Open Steam browser and click add a game at the bottom left corner then click add a non Steam game. From there it will open a bunch of different games which you can add as non steam games. You will want to find the replaced executable and add that as a non Steam game. After that it will appear in your library and you can run that for overlay but hours is sadly disabled.

You could rename your old executable to something other than BattlefrontII and then make SWBFSpy executable named that and it should recognize it then

turn on the ability to view file extensions and look for the exe file in that folder.  Tell us what you see, or better yet, post a screen shot of that folder for us and we can see what happened.

Hey,

First off, this is great stuff! I hope to be able to play swbf2 online with minimal lag, like in the good old days (minus the minimal lag, perhaps)

I'm not sure whether I have the patch working correctly. When I click on multiplayer and then "Join", the game freezes for about 20 seconds, then goes to the "Busy" screen where it is presumably loading servers, but it remains on 0% until it stops searching and shows the server browser with no servers in it. I was wondering whether it's functioning as intended and there are simply no servers available, or am I messing something up? This is SWBF2 1.1

Cheers

Hi Caedus,

First, are you using the steam version of SWBF2 or the DVD installed version?

Have you installed the patch?

If so, which one--please link us to the exact one you applied (we support SWBF1/2/PC/PS2 to it is easy to get the patches mixed up).

Also, please let us know if you are using windows 10 or another version

OK, there are two things to try.  First, just double click on the new exe named
BattlefrontII - SWBFSpy.exe

note:  you may need to alt-tab out of the game and allow it through the windows firewall

Second  option:

If you launch through steam, be sure to copy your original BattlefrontII.exe file to battlefrontii-orig.exe and then rename the new exe to BattlefrontII.exe.

In both cases, be sure to "search all regions".

Let us know if that works

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately I've done those things, I've launched the game through the new swbfspy.exe version and tabbed out to allow it through the firewall :( I don't run it through steam currently, I want to get this sorted before I start renaming .exes for that :P Also out of an habit I immediately went to online options and set it to search all regions :P haha

EDIT: Also when I last tried to host my own server in game, it closed the server down saying unable to register (or something like that, don't quite remember the message).

OK.  The symptoms you described would be if you are not able to contact the master server.  I just re-downloaded the patch and ran it and it works just fine, so that is not the issue.

I would recommend backing up your original exe and renaming the new exe.  There is no harm to do this, and you can just reverse the process to get things back in place if you don't like it.

There are only a couple of other things I can think of:

-make sure you have not remapped any calls using your hosts file located at
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

If you don't know about the hosts file, chances are you have never changed it so don't worry about it.

-You can check your Virtual Store to make sure there is not a stuck copy of the unpatched file

You can also just use the auto-installer:

OK, so SWBF1 from 2004, using the SWBFspy patch?  Can you tell us exactly what patch you applied and also your operating system version (7, 8, 10, etc).  Also tell us if you are using SWBF 1.2.

And the crash occurs when you go to launch the game?

You need to have the exe file in the same folder as Binkw32.dll (meaning; you need to add it to GameData).

Hello all! I wish I was able to say that I've had no issues but that isn't the case. I'll try and fill you all in with as much info as I possibly can as I've wrapped my brain around this for the past hour but I've had no luck. If you need any more info let me know!

I am running Battlefront 2 through Steam on a Windows 8.1 machine (64 bit, if needed). After reading/watching a handful of tutorials I downloaded the most recent patch for BF2 through the link on the home page (I had to double check a few times to ensure I was downloading the correct file too. I really didn't want to have to type out this post.), extracted it via 7zip, and then moved the .exe file over into the Steam/steamapps/common/Star Wars Battlefront II/Gamedata folder. I renamed the original .exe to BattlefrontIICOPY and then changed the name of the new .exe to just BattlefrontII. The first time I tried this I just double-clicked on the new .exe file, clicked Online, saw there were servers, clicked to join a server, and then the game just crashed. I tried right clicking and "running as Admin", saw servers, tried to join, game crashes.

I tried the suggested "game crash fixes": Enable Studio Mix (learned that my laptop doesn't have Studio Mix apparently), Deleted the vidmode file, and plugged something into my microphone port. None of these worked.

So then I went back and tried the auto installer. I set it to the above mentioned path and was feeling a bit hopeful. Yet the same result occurred. I KNOW I have to be doing something absolutely wrong here because all of the video tutorials I've seen have made this out to be something that is just really simple so either I'm doing something wrong or there's something a bit more technical blocking me from getting this to work.

Thanks for all of the hard work you guys have done and thank you so much for taking the time to read this. If I can get this to work then I'm hoping to convince a few of my friends to jump on and join in from time to time. Very sorry for the long post!

Just for a little more info:
rename the SWBFspy exe file to something (like SWBFspySWBFII.exe)
copy (or rename) your original backup exe to what it was originally.

Try to run it and let us know what it does (works or crashes).
Make a shortcut from SWBFspySWBFII.exe to your desktop.  Start the game with that shortcut.  Let us know what happens (works or crashes).

Verify that your firewall lets the new exe through.  I will think about some more options if those things don't provide useful clues.

I seem to have this problem as well for SWBF2 but it's probably because the Mac Port I'm using is broken somewhere within. But I replace my old .exe's with the new ones, also renaming them to BattlefrontII.exe.But this is probably a problem with the port, as it crashes with the both exes in Singleplayer as well.

so I have no Idea about how many players there are online but theres probally a ton more
than swbf1

As for SWBF1 I usallly play at 02:00 MT. (2:00 AM MT)
somtimes i also play it later in the day if i have time and other players are there
example 15:00 MT(3:00 PM MT)

SWBF2 is ever growing in popularity.

Perhaps you disconnected/disabled your mic? I recall SWBF2 having a problem where you needed a mic to be connected/enabled in, otherwise the game would crash before loading. Don't ask why that is because I have no idea lol

You can also enabled Stereo Mix if that's an available option. That's what I do.

I've already done all the suggested things.  My normal Battlefront II with GameRanger works perfectly, and the SWBFIISpy used to work perfectly as well.  I have no idea what could have changed.  I am using Windows 10 and I have reset my PC recently so there may be some issues there.

The patch worked great up until recently, but now whenever I launch a match the game simply closes - there are no error messages and no minimized windows.  I can still get to the server list screen, it just won't load the map or even the loading screen itself.  Does anyone know how to fix this?  It seems like this problem is becoming widespread.

I'm hoping you can help me.  I downloaded the patch for SWBFII for PC and put the file in my GameData folder.  I doubled clicked it and the game started.  I selected "MULTIPLAYER", then "JOIN".  My computer locked up for about 30 seconds, then the "Busy..." popup was displayed.  The percentage stayed at 0% for about 30 seconds.  Then the screen that is supposed to list all of the active games came up.  It was empty.  There were no games to join.  Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I have a list of about 15 servers.  Please post a link to what patch you installed so we can check it.

Thank you for replying.  I downloaded the auto installer from this link:
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1248

I then double clicked the new .exe.  When I get to the list of servers, it is blank.  However, It does say "Not logged in" in the lower left corner, but I am assuming that is normal now since we can no longer log in to GameSpy?  I don't know what else to do at this point.

I always check all regions.

I read that you must have a version of the patch .exe that has a last modified date of 5/28/2016 or later.  The only version I seem to be able to get is 5/27/2016.  How do I get the latest version?

Use that with a manual install. Let us know if you are using the steam version. Check you firewall. It works.

Still no luck.

I am not using the Steam version.  I am using the CD version I bought in a store years ago.

I am using Norton Security Suite for my firewall.  I turned it off and still no luck.

Good night guys,

I have just posted an update in the SWBFSpy Engagement board, and I wanted to ask if anyone is interested in being part of SWBFSpy Engagement. If there are any questions, this link will hopefully answer them - http://info.swbfspy.com/swbfspy-engagement.html

What do we expect of you ?
We'd like to see passion and desire to keep SWBF1 and 2 running. Without active people it is pointless to have a MS, so we expect our staff to be examples of activity and passion. How do we achieve this ? With people like you.

People claim not to have any interest anymore on these games because they are "old", but we have to make them realise that what we have now could be lost, and we might never have it again, so we gotta do our best to keep it alive.

These are the current roles for the project:
- Community Ambassador
- Game Ambassador
- SWBFSpy Engagement

Feel free to contact me in case someone wants to know anything else

I turned off My firewall and it still didn't work.  Usually it asks me if I want to allow it or not.  With SWBFII, it never asked.

I am at home now.

I live in Chicago.

Have you ever used team viewer and teamspeak?

I can see your computer with team viewer and see if I can find the issue.  We can talk over teamspeak.  It would have to be some time at the end of next week before I will be available again, but Anyder may be able to help.

I can't think of any good reason why your game would not work.  I see your ISP is comcast, just like me.  They do not block anything related to SWBF/SWBF2.

Installing SWBFSpy: What to take into account

1) Make sure you download the proper file (Client / Server)

2) Make sure you overwrite the old file (or if you wanna keep the old file, just rename the old one to "BattlefrontII - Gameshare.exe" and paste there the new one).

3) If you're not gonna download the autoinstaller, I'll remind you that you need WinRar to extract the files (Or any other program similar to this one) -- WinRar Download link ( http://www.win-rar.com/download.html?&L=0 )

4) Make sure you have installed it correctly at the following location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\  SWBF1 or SWBF2 Folder \GameData -- There u should find Battlefront.exe or BattlefrontII.exe (Check for last modification date --> It must be 5/28/16 or later)
*Note: If the OS is 32-bit, omit the (x86)

5) If their game was bought through Steam, the location of the game folder will be here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common

EDIT:

Now, if u're crashing try these solutions:

- Enable stereo mix
How to Enable Stereo Mix:
Start > Control Panel > Sound > Recording tab > If you don't see Stereo Mix, right click and select Show Disabled Devices > Enable Stereo Mix
(If you still don't see Stereo Mix, try to plug in a mic and enable it)
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/39532/how-to-enable-stereo-mix-in-windows-7-to-record-audio/
https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+enable+stereo+mix&client=aff-maxthon-maxthon4&channel=t28&gws_rd=ssl

- Run as admin; go to right click on the entire SWBF2 folder (located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common) and going to:
Properties > Security > Edit > Choose your User > give it full permissions by clicking the Allow on everything there > Apply. > Advanced > Add Permissions if you like > at the top change OWNER to your main User. > hit Apply. > then go back to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common > click SWBF2 > GameData > right click on SWBF2 > at the top it should say Run as Administrator, try to run it that way, if that doesn't help, right click again > go to Properties > Compatibility > Run the program in Compatibility Mode. In Security make sure you have admin rights there also, simply go to security and check. click Edit to change Permissions, click Advanced to change Owner and more Permissions just like before with the SWBF2 folder.

- Delete vidmode (vidmode is located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData\DATA\_LVL_PC )

- Plug something into microphone port
Yep, the Stereo Mix did the trick.

Thanks you.

By the way.  Every one keeps telling me that the last modified date on the .exe has to be 5/28/2016 or later.  As far as I can tell, there is no such file.  The only one I can download has a last modified date of 5/27/2016 and it works fine.

Alright, so what you need to do is download the Steam patch for SWBF2 here:
http://info.swbfgamers.com/downloads.html

Read the README file, which contains the installing info (I think you didn't do this, so I'll quote):
How to install:
Extract all the .zip folder into the GameData folder of ur game located here:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars Battlefront II\

I'll repeat:
The SWBF2 Battlefront Exe goes to GameData folder, the rest go to the data>_lvl_pc folder.
Let me know if you know how to do this

I think what you're looking for is the GOG/Steam server software which we do not have here.

If you look for the SWBFSpy server software you just need the regular software and the "Server Software Patch" from that website: http://info.swbfgamers.com/downloads.html

and look for server that say 2PC to see how many players on on them at any particular instant.

If you need SWBF2 dedicated server software for use with SWBFspy.com then let us know.

Mine is saying "The program can't start because binkw32.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

It looks like it is installed and without the discs I can't reinstall it also there are 2 GameData folders so I am a little confused where to put it so I put it in the one that already had the BattlefrontII exe

This is the Path I found it under C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData\GameData

I don't know maybe I need someone to screenshare on my PC so they can see whats going wrong?

Delete the old game and install the new files -- then just replace the exes

Okay so I know this is getting just as old for me as it is for you guys but now I have more problems the game installed I got the new exe installed and I can get in to the game but certain parts of the game the video glitches out is there any fixes for this like I can move to a spot or look a certain direction up down left or right and I suddenly have no video unless I hit Esc and pull up the menu or if I run past an ammo bot for the stupidest reason or even when selecting which character I am going to use in battle the video will cut out as soon as I click on to the character and then come back as soon as I click off the character and then as soon as I go to spawn will have no video again

This happens in single player as well as multiplayer and can be much worse in multiplayer and is mainly just fine when I am in a star fighter unless I do a fancy roll move or fancy 180 degree turn

If you have all these files, it must work -- otherwise reply to this post and let us know
