Tech Support / So you want to build a PC?
May 15, 2014, 11:00:22 PM
Just testing this out. Let's see if it gains any momentum.

I have a feeling a lot of members here are interested in building a PC however either is limited by budget or isn't very knowledgable when it comes to choosing the right parts. This is where I can assist you!

Want to build a gaming pc? A cheap computer for your gramps? A strong video editing machine? Anything you want to do, there's a build that can cater your needs. The wide selection and competitive prices of PC parts is what makes PC building a great alternative to building a computer from scratch.

--------------------
So you want to build a PC? Answer the following questions:
1) What will you be doing? (Gaming, AutoCAD, Photography, etc)

2) Maximum budget? Is Microcenter an option(check online for your nearest Microcenter)? What state do you live in (to factor in tax)? Is there a retailer you wish to stay exclusive to (not recommended)?

3) Do you need a monitor, mouse, DVD drive, keyboard, new OS, etc?

4) Are you interested in a smaller case? (Good if your room doesn't have a lot of space).

5) Any parts you currently own and expect to re-use?

--------------------

That's essentially all that's needed to make a solid PC build. I'm happy to help make a build list for anyone as it's a rather fun hobby for me :P

Browsing through the threads I got a question:

Anyone getting this on PC? It seems like a good number of you guys are running off laptops and old PCs. (Particularly the can you run it thread. I'm surprised that site still exists.)

I built a PC to play BF3 and it's a great experience but if you guys will resort to console it will sway my purchase.

I want to play the new swbf with the OGs. :)

EA Star Wars Battlefront!!!

What's up guys. Just dropping by to say hi.

I'm hype for the new Star Wars Battlefront. I hope they can retain some of the aspects of the SWBF1 instead of making it a carbon copy of Battlefield 4.

What's going on guys?

Other Games / I'm giving away dota 2
February 19, 2013, 07:08:44 PM
If you want Dota 2, post here. I have 10 copies to give out.

If the number of people is >10 by tomorrow night, I'll resort to random.org for a fair drawing.

With that said if you have a feeling that you won't be playing the game much due to poor PC/serious lack of time (like me), then please be considerate to others who actually want to play the game.

You guys got 24 hours!

Anyone interested in HD screenshots from other PC games?
I've recently built a new PC, so I can take some awesome screenshots with anti-aliasing and all the flashy stuff.

Star Wars Battlefront (2004 Original) / More Gamespy
December 14, 2012, 07:55:55 PM
Time to add more fuel to the fire.

It took a while to reach major blogs due to gamespy being a small scale operation now but anyway here's the go-around:

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/12/14/gamespy-multiplayer-server-shutdown-result-of-failure-to-pay-by/

gamespy says they aren't paid. they cut service. LucasArts chooses not to inform the players.

So we now point our finger at LucasArts. Who's to blame we don't know, but at least we know why the servers were cut.

because of MONEY.

While Tunngle has been working, there's two flaws to the program.

- First is that it's a Windows only program, leaving the mac minority (which was the origin of this forum in the first place) in the dust.

- Second, people are having random connection issues to the point of not using Tunngle.

My suggestion: Find/create (why not make one if we can't find a decent free one) a multiplatform VPN solution so that players can connect via the lan function.

Mac and PC players can play together under vlan. We can finally bridge mac and pc players which can help the player population as a whole.

While gameranger is relatively easy to use, it separates Mac and PC users. This mishap can be an opportunity to bridge them together.

Other Games / Black Ops 2!
November 08, 2012, 06:28:29 PM
I'm a huge fan of the new setting and backstory to Black Ops 2. It takes a lot of inspiration from cyber punk anime like Ghost in the Shell (where I got the name aeria) and merges it with the war settings of American games. I haven't been this excited for a Call of Duty game in a long while.

Anyway, here's how bad I wanted to play it!

Anyone else interested in Black Ops? I know the series is getting a bit repetitive but I'm pleased with this one. :)

Star Wars Battlefront (2004 Original) / Throwback night
November 05, 2012, 09:15:35 PM
After hearing about GR rarely being active... this calls for a throwback night!

Due to the lack of an Intel port, I'm curious: How many people on this forum are mac users vs pc users?

I really want to do a throwback night of either:
1) A round of Cloud City no bots no command points
2) An awesome host providing awesome custom maps to play on. Consistent custom map games with 10+ players is something I couldn't find on PC (4 years ago, can't judge about now). If anything, those servers would be empty.

I haven't played in three years but I'm installing the PC version right now :)

Some of the older mac players remember playing those two game modes. While not everyone liked cloud city, it was the best way to keep the pace in games. The maps were kept small and not capturing any command points meant you had to respect spawn points (to a certain extent) and it focused all the action of killing.

As for custom maps: They're fresh content so it's awesome.

For nostalgia sake and for the newcomers to have a taste of how GR was, can I get some players who are interested?

If there's more mac players than pc players I might install leopard and install the mac version. It's something I'd be excited to participate in!

Then there's the OG throwback of doing rockets only as that was the only class used before the era of snipers that became added to the mix. But I want to do cc no bots no cps!!

Hello SWBFGamers,

It's been a while, hasn't it? Looks like the forums are in good shape. :D

Anyway here's an unfortunate warning I must give out to everyone.

Star Wars Battlefront will NOT run under Mac OS X Lion. I am currently running on the Developer Preview build of Lion and I can confirm that the game will not be playable. This a warning to anyone who is interested in purchasing a copy.

Explanation: SWBF is a PowerPC application. It was capable of running on Intel Macs by the use of Rosetta, a software that has been REMOVED in the next major Mac OS X release (Lion). I am currently trying to find a workaround for Rosetta to work. No success so far.

Apple is trying to cut off all PowerPC support, period. Unless LucasArts releases a patch that makes the game native to Intel hardware, please stay in Snow Leopard.

Other Games / How to play SFII
January 07, 2011, 11:23:19 PM
While I am actually logged on. Here's the first part to an excellent beginner's tutorial to Super Street Fighter II Turbo. This shows how much depth the series really has and it's an excellent introduction to play the game other than "mashing dem buttons".

Whether or not you like or even know about Street Fighter, I'd highly suggest you to check it out as it's a good appreciation of how deep video games can be.

David Sirlin also made a good Super Smash Bros. tutorial that explains that competitive side of the game. Be sure to check it out after the break!

My lack of "posting in every active topic" recently can explain only one thing (aside from explaining the absurd post count from the past).

I'm getting bored here. I'll be back later. And I'll probably be more helpful when I do.

Later.

Oh BTW to BHF forum members, don't worry I'll keep checking it out. Just keep trollin' over there. :)

Other Games / I finished OoT. Today.
December 27, 2010, 08:04:01 PM
I have a rather nasty confession to make. It took me 6 years to finish OoT. Many years of stalling myself but only now have I finished it.

As much as I loved the game, I have never finished Ocarina of Time for the N64. My childhood consisted being stuck in the Water Temple, and then used an emulator when I was 11 to skip right to the ending credits. I've listened to the soundtracks of the rest of the areas I never visited and that's it. Yeah, it's embarrassing.

But today at 9:57 PM, not only have I finally defeated Ganon without any cheats, but I completed the whole game in about 12 combined hours (if you exclude the gazillion hours of fishing and a few side quests) without any cheats or glitches. I feel so proud for myself, I can't believe it.

As proof, here's a bloody screenshot taken straight from my console.

I have to say as I've gotten older, the game became significantly easier for me to complete. Unfortunately because of the outdated graphics I didn't have the immersion and absolute shock that I recall having when you see Castle Town full of ReDeads.

The Water Temple was such a pain in the rear to go through. I had to swear, please forgive me for it but I can't believe how much torture was put into its design. I remember constantly going through the dungeon over and over however I was overlooking one important part of the game: you could re-lower/re-raise the water level. The game outsmarted me in my 9 year old mind and I spent most of my time in the fishing pond meanwhile because I couldn't figure out the Water Temple.

A little over a year ago I booted up my console yet again to figure it out. I played from scratch and I got up the Water Temple. While I did go further than before, there was one particular enemy that prevented me from getting any further.

Dark Link.

It took me perhaps 30 something deaths before I got myself to realize I must be doing something wrong. Every single time, I just got my rear kicked. It was then when I looked on the internet and I read that the Hammer can easily kill him. Apparently it was true, I won rather quickly. Then I restarted and tried again with only the sword. Apparently if you don't focus on the enemy, it's possible to hit him. Despite the fact that I successfully defeated Dark Link, I still couldn't finish the temple. As a result, I dropped the game again.

A few months ago, I booted up the game again through an emulator and I skipped the Water Temple entirely so that I could visit the Shadow Temple and the Spirit Temple. The Shadow Temple I finished but the Spirit Temple I only entered, did not bother to explore. The Shadow Temple was very spooky, especially with the elements of the Lens of Truth, but that dungeon was significantly easier and I managed to complete it rather quickly... I still didn't beat the game. It was sad now that I look back at how much of a chicken I was.

Let's fast forward to 2 days ago. December 25th, 2010. All I had for Christmas was a few shirts from only one side of my family. I was upset at how I realized that by the time I was 15, I was old enough for my family to forget about me and as a result, my mom as well. With my mom coming from a family of 7 siblings, it's a bit harsh for me to at least not get a card, considering the amount I sent out. With nothing to do, I booted up a fresh gamesave of OoT again. It was 3 PM and I set a goal for myself to finish it before 12 AM. In fact, I updated Hardcore of my status while doing so.

This was rather an astonishing feat of... doing really well. lol. In a little bit over 10 hours, I managed to go from the very beginning of the game to finishing the Spirit Temple. I failed to complete my goal, but being able to finish all 8 dungeons in one sitting was such a great accomplishment for me. The last place remaining was Ganon's castle. Being completely exhausted from the constant play, I went to bed and slept for 14 hours. I set my alarm so I can wake up 6:30 in the morning by obviously it didn't work.

The next day I spent time to relax and just do whatever sidequests there were in the game. I managed to get myself the Biggoron sword which is an awesome double handed sword, got the Mask of Truth, talked to all of the Stones, used the rumble pad to detect whatever hidden items were available, and all of the rest of the nook and crannies of the game. The only things I haven't done were collecting all of the Skulltulas and collecting all of the hearts. Everything else however I think I've managed to complete. For the nickpickers: I know it's impossible to out run the Running Man in the Gerudo Valley, don't mention it.

Today, I spent the time to finish Ganon's castle. It was rather straight forward and I finished it quickly. The final two boss battles were quite fun, however I only had trouble first figuring out Ganondorf. For some reason, I knew that Ganon had a tail that was vulnerable so that was very easy. The music played when Ganon really set the "final boss" tone. I had fun with that and when I reached the The End scree, I swapped the video cable over to my capture card so I could take that picture.

So yes. I finally finished one of the greatest games of all time... after all these years. Never too late to finish it, eh? Now that I think back, I think the memorable moments for me was the Forest Temple, Lost Woods, Fire Temple, and sigh... the Water Temple. As mean as it was to go through it, I did it. I find it embarrassing for being outsmarted by game design for not being able to complete it before I became a teenager, but I'm glad I finished it before the day I would lose interest in gaming.

I don't know where to go from here. I might be able to sell this old dinosaur now that I've accomplished what I wanted to accomplish. I think I might give it to one of my younger cousins and make sure he gets to be able to complete this masterpiece of a game before he plays the games of his generation. Otherwise, I'm unsure what to do w/ OoT.

Well, that's my Christmas story of a gamer. One who used the cheap way at first but then did it the right way in the end.

Other Games / Battlefield Play4Free Closed Beta
December 20, 2010, 06:51:46 PM
It appears I've been granted access to its closed beta. Can't complain about that.

I'll post soon on my thoughts of it.

--AG

EDIT: It appears that part of the agreement on getting Closed Beta access to the game is that I CANNOT upload any beta footage whether that is videos, screenshots, or any other means. To keep myself within the rules, I will merely provide my opinions of the game in its closed beta state. I can't go further than that.

Other Games / Bomberman
December 16, 2010, 06:52:09 PM
Just enjoyed myself some Bomberman action for the first time at the cafe. It took only one game and I immediately loved it. The owner of the store and 3 more of us were playing the gamecube version of Bomberman and it was great fun. It's a simple game that's fast paced and gets really intense. I think we played for three hours straight. We just couldn't stop playing.

I'm serious. Get a copy of Bomberman and play with some friends. It's a blast!

Other Games / Goldeneye Wii
November 08, 2010, 04:01:42 PM
Well over the weekend I got myself a copy of Goldeneye Wii and I love it to death. Eurocom made 007 Nightfire which was a great game so I was eager to try their second Bond game.

I played through the Training Mode, the controller scheme is acceptable. Somewhere in the beginning of the first level, my Wii crashed and made this terrible buzzing sound. I was a little bit unhappy about it but hoped it was just a one time thing (cod4wii also crashes on the rare occasion). Playing again I got significantly further into the first level, just taking pictures of a helicopter and it crashed AGAIN.

It appears my copy is crash-prone and I was so eager to play this game. :(

Anyone else managed to get a copy? Is anyone else crashing? I hope I just have some heating issue (I have a bad habit of keeping my Wii idle for several days) and not a faulty copy.

BTW from what I've played so far, I thought it wasn't too bad. Give it a shot! :D

While we all know the PC version was the best, it was nice to hear that SWBF made the list on IGN's 100 best PS2 games. :)
