Title: How to play SWBF2 with Gamespy down
Post by: Anyder on July 26, 2014, 06:43:23 PM
As of 26th July 2014 SWBF2 Gamespy is down, so the options to play SWBF2 are SWBFSpy and Tunngle.
As the community prefered the first option, I'll explain u how to play SWBF2 with SWBFSpy...

First off, you gotta download this file, which will automatically install the exe: http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1248

First of all, you have to know what version you're playing, and after that, go to the following website 1.0 is no longer supported. The only running version is 1.1

After downloading it, extract from the zip folder the client .exe files, and go to C:\Program Files (x86)\LucasArts\StarWars Battlefront II\GameData\Data and replace ur current BattlefrontII.exe file for the one you have just downloaded.
(Please, make sure that the new swbf2.exe file has as name BattlefrontII.exe)
And then just play as u used to!

If you need help with the installation, feel free to ask in this thread or PM me.

You can also change your Hosts file, with no need for hex editing.  It is a text file.

True, in that case...
Go to C:/Windows/system32\drivers\etc
Click on hosts, and open it with the notepad

Copy-paste this:

Also, if u use steam, u can find the local swbf2.exe here:

Can you use this and Eyes only patch at the same time or do they edit the same things?

Good question.
I've never heard of that thing until Bomber mentioned it, so I have no ideao on how that Eyes thing works

If it's a master server substitute like GameMaster or Openspy, you have to have 2 different .exe files, which can be hex edited, but you better don't modify the hosts file, previously mentioned.

It's possible to have all masterserver substitutes, as long as you have as many battlefrontII.exe's as master server substitutes.

Who made a patch ?

We're gonna use GameMaster cause it's just a battlefrontII.exe modification, and not a tool, which unless you host from ur PC, u're not able to set up dedicated servers.
I'm not sure if this was what u meant

Scott Kevill, the gameranger creator, made a patch for gameranger for swbf2. You CAN host dedicated servers, thats what the patch was for.

He also made one for SWBF dedicated server.  In fact, he registered here on this site and has been very helpful.

The drawback of the GameRanger option right now (at least since I tested it last) is that it supports only one instance of the dedicated server software.

Most of us that run hosted servers run several instances.

There will be a time, however, when the GameRanger option will be our only reasonable alternative. It is by far the simplest option to use for home-hosted servers.

I am not sure about any windows 8 issues, but Gameranger should automatically do everything without needing to portforward.

To tell you the truth Led I do not know what is causing the issue for me, and I am not the only one with it. But GameRanger freezes if I try to join or host any game. And I read on the official forums that he was having some issues with Windows 8 compatibility, I am not sure if it is related though. I also have internet that does not allow port forwarding...

Nothing on the internet keeps you from port forwarding. If you have a router, then you port forward automatically for a lot of things, whether you realize it or not.  When we talk about port forwarding here for SWBF, we are meaning a manual set up of your router to send the traffic to a designated game computer.

If you have a direct connection to the internet like the NFO server, or at home without a router, then you don't need to do any port forwarding.

Anyway, if you have an issue with gameranger, it is because of windows 8, not portforwarding, since gameranger doesn't need portforwarding.

I understand what you are saying, and yes it is probably a Windows 8 issue, but what I was trying to say is (and Scott Kevill agreed) with the Verizon MiFi hotspot it is impossible, to port forward as only Verizon can modify it. But I guess that is another issue...

So is online for SWBFII just dead? Or am I just using the solution to play online that no one else is using?

There's not very many people on at all...

Is there another method that a large portion of the old SWBFII community (before the shutdown) is using? Or is there really no one left.

There are two master servers set up for SWBF2.  You should check GameToast for details.  One is GameMaster, and the other is a new OpenSpy implementation.

The Number of people on varys depending on the time of day. I know that if I'm on during the early afternoon there are still usually one or two full servers, while in the evening there are only a couple of people.

From my understanding there is only three ways to play SWBF2 online. GameMaster, GameRanger and FreeGST.

Everyone knows what GameMaster is obviously. It was the most popular one out of them all. I haven't played Swbf2 in a couple months but when I was playing everyone was using that.

FreeGST never took off. It had some cool features added to it like fixing the team chat colors but it had a issue with servers not being able to be restarted until you changed the port of your server. Not sure if they fixed it but I'm pretty sure it's dead.

GameRanger is a thrid party LAN program similar to Tungle, I noticed a decent amount of players use it. When I was playing though Game Master was more populated. So I don't know if players from GameMaster moved to GameRanger or not. I find it stupid to move over to GameRanger due to losing the capability to run Dedicated servers but that's just me.

Lol? It depends what type of router you have, just because you didn't have to port forward doesn't mean everyone doesn't have too. I run Widows 7 and I had to forward my ports to use it. But the easiest solution to this is just to DMZ your router. Then you don't have to worry about port forwarding anything.

You have taken my quote out of context.  He was saying something on "the internet" at large was restricting his ability to portforward.

The ability to portward is a local issue, not an internet issue.

You either have to run the original SWBF for mac on an old OS and then you can play Gameranger (mac only) or
you have to run wine or some PC emulator and run the PC version with the gamemaster patch (if you want to play online).

Ask unit33 or kitfisto for more details.

In your steam game library, find the game and then right click and select "properties" , "local files" "browse local files" to find the game location.

Using steam or not, u need a swbf2.exe to run the game.
Steam's swbfii version is 1.1 (the one supported by game) so i dont see the prob...

The actual folder of most steam games I believe is "Program Files (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common" or something like that.  There they are split into the actual games and files which you can switch the exe.

I think you miss understood me. GameMaster has a "launcher", which will launch any of the games they patch. (In addition to the actual patched exe file.) You can read about it here: http://gameshare.co/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=131

I assume this is for swbf2, are you using the steam or disc version? I'm not sure why the icons is appearing and disappearing, is this happening just on the desktop or in the directory also? I'm not particularly computer smart so all I can say is perhaps re-installing might help and otherwise wait til the experts post.

You said that you changed the installer so that it would work better.
But I am a mac user, and now since it is not in a folder format, I can't get to the .exe file to replace in my game files.
Can you provide the original link to the files as well as the newer installer?
Thanks. :moo:

The installer is for PC files.

Just out of curiosity is this the main solution that the majority of the SWBFII online community used? Because whenever I go online I don't see very many people at all. Is the traffic for SWBFII online really that dead or is there an alternate solution that many more people are using?

Is it possible to edit the .exe or something to that extent to join gamespy servers instead of gamemaster? I can't the download gamespy app for Mac because it's not supported and Wine refuses to run the installer for windows version of gamespy.

This usually means the patch was installed in the wrong location.  Please tell us what you did to install the patch, what version of windows that you use, and what folder SWBF2 is located.

I'm not really sure how it's supposed to work but I went in to BF2 (through steam) and it still says that it can't find servers. I'm pretty sure I did it right. I took the gameshare autoinstaller and took the exe file in it and added it to the gamedata file in my battlefront file.

You should check the game location for steam.  It may place it in a non-standard location.  Make sure the new exe is named the same as the "stock" exe file.  I don't have SWBF2 installed, so I can't check the name right now.

Last, check the windows virtual store location (use google to find out more information) to make sure that there is not an old copy of the exe there.  Let us know if any of those ideas work.

OK, it looks like I do have it installed...

Here is the file location:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData

and the file name is
BattlefrontII.exe

i will download the installer and give it a try.

OK, it worked fine for me.  There are not a lot of players on right now, but a lot of servers are available.

for reference, here are the files that I have in Gamedata:

BINKW32.DLL
EAX.DLL
UNICOWS.DLL
BATTLEFRONTII.exe

and the folders
DATA
SAVEGAMES

One thing I don't understand is what are the two .exe files I should have in that file. For me I have trhe original Battlefront game exe and the gameshare patch exe.

The gamemaster patch exe file needs to be called BattlefrontII.exe

You no longer need the original exe, but you might want to put it in another folder for some reason.

The date on the patch should be 7/27/2014

If you still have trouble, the easiest thing to do is to use run the auto-installer program and just browse to your steam location (that I have pasted in a previous post).

IMPORTANT:  make sure you are using the SWBF2 patch, not the SWBF patch.

Having problems with the patch (maybe it's just my game files or something, but I don't think so).
On a Mac (OSX Yosemite 10.10.5) and even with the patch installed, whenever I click the multiplayer tab, the game freezes.
After 5-10 minutes when it un-freezes, there is no game list and no nothing to select or join. This happens every single time I click join under the multiplayer tab.
Because of this I cannot even play LAN with friends. Is there a fix for this? (P.S. I wiped my disk and reinstalled my OS but same problem).

Are you using the Mac Aspyr version of SWBF?  If so, the patch is only for the PC version.

Use the SWBF2 autoinstaller and make sure to chose your install location based on where Steam says it is located.
(in your game library, right click and view game properties, install location).

Okay so I have swbf 2 installed on my Desktop and I want to play swbf 2 online is game master and stuff still the way to go or has it all switched to swbfspy as well and if possible i'd like to be able to host a sever without having to edit hosts files as well, on top of that I don't know how to even be on my own server like as in battling while I am hosting I've tried before but It just gave me a screen where I don't remember all it was but I think there was an end server and boot options for booting people but I didn't see anyway I could play it..... I don't know a lot of this stuff is hard for me to learn cause of my learning disabilities but if its broken down and slowed up for me a bit I can learn it easier I don't know, theres a lot of things I want to do but its a drag to do it but I want to but its a drag cause its hard for me to learn and take me a long time to figure things out lol.

Great now i'm gonna lose you in my rambled on post I think a lot and too much out loud that it just transfers and leads to something else, and then when I want stuff to come out I miss words I say in my head so its confusing to people lol

Also is there mod tools like there is for swbf if so i'd like to know how to do that and what not cause i'd like to make some maps and what not. (Which is also sorta a drag for me but I want to do it really bad (Yes I know that's such a drag))

Anyways can anyone help me with this please? Thanks!

Gamemaster shut down the masterserver, that's why we are hosting it now.

For that u have to:
1) Host it on a paid VPS/Rootserver
2) Host under another account of ur PC

I downloaded the .exe, placed it inside the gamedata folder.
Launched the .exe, and in the multiplayer -> join screen, I get a [Busy 0%] popup.

After I click cancel on the [Busy 0%] popup there are no servers on my screen. This client literally doesn't work.

Gameranger is also totally broken, limited to 15fps when I use it to start a match but at least it can connect to a server.

This tutorial thread was hard enough to find. Instructions for installing this should be included with the download. How about a readme bundled inside a .zip? Doesn't matter anyways, multiplayer in this game is a total clusterf*ck.
There's no information anywhere to even find out what works. Gameranger? Gamemaster? SWBFgamers? Steam? GOG? Hopeless

First of all, the thread is not hard to find, since its linked in the Portal, as well as in other website.
If u actually tried to google SWBFSpy u'd find at least 6 videos on how to install SWBFSpy, which is just an exe replacement.
Also, that is so not the attitude to post anything here.

Your attitude and maturity are commendable and I congratulate you on keeping your language civil and polite.

All joking aside... you should really do your research before being so blatantly disrespectful.

We support (as a hobby)  SWBF(1) and  SWBF2 for PS2, PC, Mac, and Linux for playing and serving the games.  There are many exe's out there.  Some are even language specific.

Tell us what you downloaded and we will help.

You can play on GoG servers for SWBF2 steam, or you can get our patch kit to play on SWBFspy.   You will likely find more players on GoG at this point in time.

If you bought battlefront 2 on steam it should work like it used to, you sometimes have to refresh the server list a few times if it freezes.

OK.  That is on SWBFspy.

I recommend that you make a copy of your steam installation.  Then, use modify that copy with this download
http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1437
(The download is the reversion kit to get you back from GoG servers.)

Make a short cut from the new copy of the game to your desktop.  Then when you launch steam, you will play GoG servers, when you launch from the new shortcut you will get SWBFspy servers.

Let us know if you have questions.

Hi everyone! I have original disk, installed it just now and I also downloaded your patched exe and started the game with that one, also updated hosts file, but I simply don't see much of activity happening nor many servers and one of the servers appears to be using custom map I don't have with 2 players, so I can't join it, other 2 servers are empty. See the screenshot attached
