Title: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days
Post by: -[JCA]- Love on March 18, 2009, 11:41:53 PM
This was an old poem I wrote back in the day, me and Starvation were just talking about it.  It's descriptive of the missile vs. missile fights that I remember as the hallmark of swbf.  I know that all you edgy kids like to snipe now, but this is how most fights used to be; they basically devolved into a circular dance with a lot of rolling and jumping to get the upper hand.

His face was grisly, gaunt and scarred,
Bedraggled, brave, the Rebel Vanguard.
Across the ice his keen ears did hear
The footsteps of a rocketeer.

He turned and saw, a'gleaming white,
A helmet icy, eyes black as night
The morning fog did becloud
An Imperial Trooper, pale and proud.

The Rebel gazed, and duly noted
The Imperial's launcher was skillfully toted
He saw the flash and heard the crack
The green shot whizzed, the Rebel fell back.

Then through the ice they did rush
The air went still, the wind did hush
A second rocket, like a fiery lance
Heralded the Missile Dance

For the thousandth time they did revive
The Missile Dance; with a jump and a dive
Like lions in the pale cold
They circled, leapt, and loosed barrages bold.

The combatants held each other savagely at bay
The Rebel grinned, his eyes turned fey
While the Imperial struggled harder
To win the cloudy way.

The battle raged, and both grew tired
The Imperial dodged, the Rebel fired
Then a discovery they both did make
The combat had moved over a frozen lake.

The Imperial hastened, fast and fleet
He let loose his assault at the Rebel's feet
The thick winter ice was burst asunder
The water splashed, and the Rebel slipped under.

The Imperial gazed through the ice and the snow
The Rebel's rockets
Were bobbing below.

I wonder why rocket fighting was replaced by sniping, and why newer people tend to be snipers more.

less movement involved.  point and shoot.

if you can click this circle here faster than the other guy you win:    O

*Disclaimer: The snipers will now say how hard it is to aim 1/2 inch to the left and hit a running target.  However the same technique is required for all classes to hit moving targets.

i still fight like that but i just use anti units to which unit the opposing player is

Tim's exactly correct, point and shoot. All I have to do a move back and forth and point at the enemy :P

That's why Sniper is the only class I'm good in.

not only point and shoot, you don't need to know the vanguard rocket trick, and you can sit in one spot the entire game next to an ammo bot in some hidden spot

What is with all this sniper hate? If you think sniping is so easy, i challenge any of you to take me in a sniper fight, and i will fight you in whatever unit you want to fight in (i.e. missile vs missile) and see who wins ;)

Snipers are popular now because they are so effective and easy to use.  Back in the day, I almost felt like it was an unwritten rule that the true test of one's manly vigor was his tenacity in close combat with the great missile launcher.  I lament the emasculation of our ancient warrior culture, tim.

plus, all the kiddies now want to be like in the movies:  You know how it goes:  the sniper in the movie is always the dark, edgy one.  The badass.  The one who doesn't take from anyone.  The one with the troubled past, a patcheye and a fancy cigar, who is a ruthless killer but a loyal friend with a heart of gold who will eventually sacrifice himself in the end to save the main character.

Dude, this game only came out in Sept 2004! A 15 year old that has been playing since he was 10 could say the same thing as you, if this was Doom I could maybe understand you're lament and using the work kiddies to distinguish between age!

Well fang, i will take you on anytime, just message me on xfire. Also, if it makes you feel better, i fight a lot in close combat, probably more then in long distance, with sniper. I have even been accused on multiple occasions of using a gamepad >.>

I'm horrible with snipers, so I don't use them. I definitely prefer explosive stuff and rifles. I don't mind when others use snipers, since they're easy to find and easy to kill once you get close range. It just takes some skill to get close range.

our ages are irrelevant, the age of the game is TP.

Well I"ve been playing earlier on in the day, and I was trying out sniper, and was getting pretty dominant during the nub hours, so I guess a few might be copying my close ranged sniper style. Maybe not though, and I'm still better with rockets.

lol? copying you?

Whenever i first started playing Battlefront on a Mac, the only person that i knew that used a sniper well, and often, was A-99. Then when i started getting better on my laptop and got back to my full strength, it seemed that everyone and their mother was using sniper in servers with me. Although, i got to hand it to them, the only way they had a chance against me was to either use a sniper or to try and sneak up and flank me, cause noone could get close enough to me to kill me and even if they did, im just as good in close range as long range xD

(not trying to sound like im bragging, just pointing out that i think i started this whole sniping phenomenon)

who cares. no classes require skill.
all you do is shoot to click basically. i mean if you have adhd and are extremely hyper that's a bonus for shooting fast but other than that...?

Title: Re: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days
Post by: Radical_Pi on March 21, 2009, 11:07:32 AM
All classes require skill khy. If I were to just walk up and shoot at any of the good players, they'd to do some awesome rolling jump and shoot me before I could react. That's skill there.
Title: Re: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days
Post by: khy on March 21, 2009, 11:31:31 AM
no, all you do is press buttons on a keyboard. that isn't skill. Sure, you might say they knew to do that. but that's knowledge
Title: Re: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days
Post by: Master Zen on March 21, 2009, 11:57:15 AM
I don't snipe because I suck at it. Also, it's just not as satisfying as a rocket kill. When you snipe someone they just fall over. With a rocket they go 100 ft in the air and do so many somersaults that they could get a gold in the olympics.

Skill is the ability to do something well. You get more kills than deaths in swbf you're doing it well, as in with skill.

i only use games to put my stress away WHO cares that your good or not maybe if your in the world gamers champion ship  that you might think you need "as you say it" skill  maybe some1 who plays it often then the other 1 is better or the 1 who has the game longer. but i think you shouldnt judge some1 only because hes "the best" because if you see some1 like destructor you have respect for him but if you see a noob/ some1 new you immediately think your better

Khyler is it skill to be the worlds top clay pigeon shooter?  i personally find shooting a gun on the computer and shooting a gun in real life take about the same amount of skill, you have to know how to do it yes, but it is still a skill to condole that knowledge, to shoot a clay pigeon you must aim, pull the trigger and then repeat if needed, to shoot a pigeon in a video game, you must aim and push the trigger, and then repeat if needed. while one may have to be loaded, cleaned, stored more so then the other, its all still skill you aim and shoot with a gun in real life just as you aim and shoot with a gun in a game.

as such -
QuoteA skill (also called talent) is the learned capacity to carry out pre-determined results often with the minimum outlay of time, energy, or both. Skills can often be divided into domain-general and domain-specific skills. For example, in the domain of work, some general skills would include time management, teamwork and leadership, self motivation and others, whereas domain-specific skills would be useful only for a certain job. Skill usually requires a certain environmental stimuli and situation to assess the level of skill being shown and used.
^Wikipedia^

just cause, a skill is just an action preformed that you have the knowledge to do well. weapons are up to those who use them, many people enjoy the staying back and having to fight for that perfect shot around 5 teammates in the hallway to get that headshot on the other sniper vise you in the other CP, while some like the close intense battle of a rocket on rocket fight with 2 veteran fighters, some even enjoy mixing that of and running in with a sniper and fighting the rockets close handed, to few's avail they live. so all in all- life is based on personal preference and so is the weapon of choice in this game, i find much honor in fighting any person who respects me as much as they can, and i will try to respect them back just the same. Alas with that, there is no reason to fight over if the good old days in your mind set be it rocket on rocket battles, or sniper on sniper- or even pilot on everything, the game is what brought us together, and the game is where it should all stay.

I hate staying back in my cp and sniping, I always charge full speed and use my nades to kill any rockets or pilots. I always keep my aim at head level for easy headshots, and people wonder how i do it. If sniping was so easy everyone would be really good at it. Oh and, on PC online the first unit people really liked alot was sniper, it was always popular.

Good 'ol missile v. missile fights. I can't believe I missed this topic. I noticed recently that many of the best players use mines often to constrict where the enemy can roll and jump.

Speaking of snipers, I just love the semi-auto sniper rifles in Ryan's jetmod.

I talked to Yankee a while back and he said there was this 1.0 guy named Rich or something that beat him 32 - 8 or something. Sorry if I'm wrong, so I have Rich > Yankee = Frenchie > Mill (Yankee and Frenchie tied in a sniping duel that wasn't even a sniping duel. It was close range sniping)

Not to brag but I know I'm better than Yankee at sniping, not by alot but i am sure i'm better seeing i have beaten him before ;-) . But rich is better than me.
Title: Re: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days

i personally find, beating someone still doesn't mean your better, i'm much better at playing with a team then i am in a 1v1 duel, i don't know why, but in a duel ill go 4/20 but in games i might go 20/1 or more, i guess its just my style of play, but i don't consider beating someone, especally in a duel to mean your better then them, but more so, just to mean you were better at that time, in those circumstances.

on the note of you charging with the sniper  and using nades to take on rockets on the PC servers, while i can see it, on PC servers you also have TK off so your nades don't hurt yourself, so even if you don't time it with time to get away, you still live..., along with nade jumping....such silly people :P
Title: Re: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days
Post by: MasterFang on March 23, 2009, 09:40:47 PM
i use ceiling bounce nades on cc, meaning that it bounces off the ceiling and sticks on the ground. Almost all the nade moves i use wouldn't kill me if TK was on. And either with teams or 1 on 1 i know im better than yankee :P (no offense to yankee) he's really good too.

I agree with HC, there's much more to being a good player than being a good shot.  I think most PC servers have teamkills or team damage on noawadays but in the few that have it off nade jumping can be real fun!  You can also play a neat game of player pidgeon shooting! You drop a nade and try to shoot the players as they fly thru the air! PULL!

I wouldnt sat swbf is a snipefest, far from! There are still loads of players run about using the other units!  Organised groups (clans mainly) usually have a good spread of units.  Everybody has their place/use. even Mr Sniperson!
Title: Re: Hey kiddies, heres how we played back in the old days
Post by: Sarg on March 28, 2009, 10:27:53 AM
Nah, it's not a snipefest. Rocketeers are still by far the most common unit. The only people who constantly snipe and nothing else are Legends, and most of the games I've been playing recently have thankfully been mostly Legends-free.

Legends is full of Jets and Snipers that are slightly worse than most clans.
