Xfire help

Ok, so pardon my noobness, but what exactly is xfire and what can you do with it? A bunch of people recommended that I get it, and I did, but i have no idea what to do now that i have it.  Help, please! Thanks!

It enables you to chat outside of the game.  Also records screenshots and videos, among other things.

Do alot of people use the chat on it? Cuz the few times i used it nobody was talking. Or can you only chat w/ friends?
