Title: How to Play SWBF1 on Mac 10.5.8 or higher
Post by: Kit Fisto on October 28, 2012, 05:05:17 PM
EDIT JUNE 2014

Here is a video tutorial that can replace the written tutorial. I recommend using the video tutorial as it is more updated than the written tutorial and (hopefully) easier to understand. I have left the written tutorial for those who like written directions but it will be way easier to just watch the video. Just watch the video will ya!

Here is how to install and play Star Wars Battlefront on MAC OSX 10.5.8 or higher.

This is what you will need.
1) Star Wars Battlefront PC copy. DVD or CD version will do. You MUST have an actual copy for this port to work.

2) This download package hosted here. This package includes an installer and the Star Wars Battlefront cider wrapper.
http://www.mediafire.com/?248rz7pqofp6rlf (http://www.mediafire.com/?248rz7pqofp6rlf)
This is the page and site that I got the SWBF Cider Wrapper: http://portingteam.com/files/file/7011-star-wars-battlefront/ (http://portingteam.com/files/file/7011-star-wars-battlefront/)
Step 1: Place your Star Wars Battlefront disk into your Mac.

Step 2: Open up the application "Installer." A folder will pop up on your desktop called "InstallerData," do not delete this. See the picture below for a visual example.
Step 3:
a) A window will pop up asking you to choose what .exe you wish to install.

b) Choose your Star Wars Battlefront disk. Mine was titled "BF_1"

c) Click setup.exe and click choose.
See this picture if you need a visual example.
Step 4:
a) The installer will start to run the .exe. A window will pop up prompting you to type in your CD-key found on your Star Wars Battlefront case (or something equivalent). Make sure to type this in correctly.

b) It will then ask you if you want to do either Automatic or Custom installation. Choose automatic. Say NO when it asks if you want Gamespy installed.

c) Once the installation is done make sure to say NO to starting SWBFI right now. Click "Finish." You may now quit the installer. You may also throw the "Star Wars Battlefront.desktop" file away. (it will be located on your desktop)

Step 5:
a) Once the installation is done open up the "InstallerData" folder located on your desktop.

b) Navigate to  drive_c/Program Files/LucasArts
See the picture below for a visual example.
c) Once you see the "LucasArts" folder open it up and drag the "Star Wars Battlefront" folder to your desktop.

Step 6:
a) Now, go to your Star Wars Battlefront cider wrapper and right click and choose "Show Package Contents."

b) Navigate to Contents/Resources/transgaming/c_drive/Program Files
See the picture below for a visual example.
c) Drag your "Star Wars Battlefront" folder that you took from InstallerData and drag it into the "Program Files" folder.
See the picture for a visual example.
Step 7:
a) Make a right click on the Star Wars Battlefront Cider port and click show package contents.

b) Go to Contents/Resources/Preferences.

c) Open the system.reg file with TextEdit

See the picture for a visual example.
d) Now search for "CD Key." You can search by pressing "CMD+F."

e) Replace the XXX's with your CD-Key. Make sure to include the dashes! Save and quit.
See the picture for a visual example.
Step 8: Close all windows and applications. Start the Star Wars Battlefront cider application. If you did everything correctly SWBF should launch and you should be able to play!

Extra notes
1) If the installer is not working for you try using Wine, an unofficial windows emulator to install SWBFI. ( http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/darwine/wine/wine-1.5.30-148-gd29f6c4%20.dmg (http://iweb.dl.sourceforge.net/project/darwine/wine/wine-1.5.30-148-gd29f6c4%20.dmg) )

1) Multiplayer is not supported for Star Wars Battlefront I anymore. If there is a way to play again, I will revise this tutorial.

2) To play in windowed mode press "CMD+ENTER." Do this again if you wish to revert to fullscreen.

3) See this link on HOW TO INSTALL MODS/MAPS TO YOUR SWBF PC PORT (http://www.swbfgamers.com/index.php?topic=5450.msg53592;topicseen#new)

this is huge, it sucks that the discovery came this late in the games life. My old clan _(VS)_ was unique in having a sizable mac division..

Does anybody know if we can get a hold of the older Mac players? Like AG? I know he was really mad the SWBF wasn't supported on the newer Macs...

That would require Aspyr to release a patch allowing Mac and PC's to cross platform through GameRanger. Which they said they won't do.  :'(

HOW TO INSTALL MODS/MAPS ONTO YOUR SWBF PC PORT

Step 1: Go to your SWBF PC PORT APP

Step 2: Right click and choose the option show package contents. A window should pop up with a folder named "Contents"

Step 3: Go to Contents; Resources; transgramming; c_drive; Program Files; Star Wars Battlefront; and Gamedata

Step 4: Inside "Gamedata" you should see this or the equivalent ( the contents of "Addon" will be different, if not then thats kinda creepy )
Step 5: Install mods like you normally would! Happy SWBF-ing!

Tip: I reccomend dragging the gamedata folder to your dock like so
(https://www.swbfgamers.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi.imgur.com%2F2Br4Q.png&hash=7ca40ebd90dc416f740ee83a3180d9ac8045efbd)
to make it way easier to install mods/maps.  :tu:

You can only have up to 20-24 maps in your addon folder at once.

Hey guys, just dropping by to say that Cider is nothing new as I created a wrapper 3-4 years ago. Macbeezle and I had fun playing on the gamespy servers back then.

I made a post about Cider back then but I believe it was locked due to legality issues. Jedikiller had zero tolerance for any hint of illegal content. Regardless this is a straightforward and useful post so I give you props for making it. :)
Might I add that the old Mac port of WINE (this is +4 yrs I'm talking about) allowed you to install the game without paying for any software or for Windows itself.

If you modify the Cider wrapper you can easily play SWBF2. I did that for a while only to realize how bad it was compared to the first one. :P

Last thing I'll mention is that there are so many different Cider wrappers out there. There are even Chromium wrappers that have good levels of success as well. All of them have radically different results in Windows games compatibility. I remember finding a wrapper that ran Modern Warfare 2 perfectly with the exception of the night vision goggles and I was having a blast. These wrappers even exists because the are commercial variants of WINE, which is a legendary project in the Linux community. So Cider wrappers exist because they are made on a per commercial game basis. They are cheap dirty ports but they work. Quickly did curious people like myself attempt to modify them to play games they weren't supposed to run. I took City of Heroes and put the data files of SWBF. Next thing I know, I'm logged into the gamespy servers. :)

So that's a minor history lesson. I'm glad there's still a community for this game and I hope people can put this awesome hack job into good use

-ag

EDIT: made minor corrections and one more thing I want to add: I'm not trying to say "I did this before you so I take credit for this and I know more than you blah blah blah" I just wanted to clear up the misconception of this being new and I wanted to inform the SWBF players whatever i can seem to remember about Cider. For all I know you could be far more knowledgable about this than I am as I haven't touched Mac games in easily 3 years.

Kit didn't make the port at all. And in fact I was going to say that he didn't discover anything at all really when this topic was made. He does deserve credits for writing this tutorial on it though.

Maybe just maybe the use of the port could be the thing that is illegal. Idk its a possibility.

The use of the port isn't the legal issue because it DOES NOT include a copy of SWBF LucasArts folder inside it. That's why you have to purchase the game. And I wouldn't have posted ANYTHING about this port if I knew it was illegal. AND to further console you Buckler, SK showed me this port, and he is maddely against illigal games. :)

EDIT: is this better?

It wasn't that it was illegal in the matter of SWBF itself. The legality at the time we were worried about was that Transgaming (CIder) wasn't released to the public and instead people were just getting the game taking out its contents and replacing it with SWBF contents. And nothing was wrong with that itself but when someone takes the shell that is Cider and uploaded it for others to download they were basically giving all of Transgamings work out for free.

And at the time as far as we could find Cider had not been released as open-sorce for the public the modify and distribute, at this point I still have no idea if they did.
however you can use other methods in fact Cider as i understand it was somewhat left in the dust by Wine at this point.

http://wineskin.urgesoftware.com/tiki-index.php Works just aswell once you figure it all out I put SWBF in it and got it running this morning in under 15 minutes and it is 100% open source.

Gee awful hostile. I didn't make the port either. I said you didn't make I was correcting Ag.

Also Hardcore introduced me to Cider. He tried to get a working port of SWBF2 but he wasn't successful. He managed to get in-game but the mouse would lock up.

I decided to test it with serveral Cider wrappers and I found one that was nearly perfect. It was completely playable however the sound was out of sync (weapon sounds are low volume anyway so it wasn't a big issue) and when you typed in text, it repeated super fast. Those were literally the only glitches. Otherwise it was a smooth and viable option to play SWBF2 on Mac.

Minor note: Hardcore and I messed around with Cider wrappers far before portingteam even existed. I peeked around the website and I'm surprised by their dedication and the many different variants of wine that are out there now. I'm very, very impressed. I joined the forums were they were brand new but around the same time I finally got myself to re-install Windows... didn't touch Cider after that.

@ SleepKiller
I credited him for making the post. Not for making the wrapper.

About the legality issues:
The problem wasn't with the SWBF files. The problem was with the wrapper itself being commercial, copyrighted software created by Transgaming. Modifying and re-releasing it was a risky move if Transgaming were to take notice, even if we weren't to make a profit from it. This is before Cider ports really became big so we were potentially a bigger target if their lawyers ever pursued action.
Transgaming created a bit of controversy for taking open source code (wine) as the base for its closed source project but that's a whole other story to tell.

Very, odd story.
Me and my little brother played together through LAN today. He was on the Macbook with the SWBFI PC port, I was on the old PowerBook G4 using my SWBF Mac copy.
This is a picture of my screen: It says he is a Mac!  I just thought that was weird.

Because it tells you how to play SWBFI on the new Mac computers. The native SWBFI Mac game doesn't work on the newer OS's. So it still has some use, just not to play online, but still for singleplayer...
Please?

You can't play SWBFI on the newer macs. But buying a SWBFI PC copy and using the wine port thing will make it work.

So can this be re-pinned. On other sites I direct them to this thread for help on the port...

Macs and PC using native Mac and PC software can not play together on GameRanger.  You would have to get a PC Gameranger emulator, play LAN option on SWBF PC on mac to play together now, unless Mac Gameranger would work with PC emulator on Mac.

Anyone care to try?  I would love to get our Mac friends back on line somehow.

Ok I think I might know how to get Tuggle to work for me. Could someone temporarily upload the Tunggle application? Not the installation exe but the App itself?

i mean, its on gamerangers list of cross-platform compatibility games, gamespy is irrelevent in this part of the conversation.

It may be on GameRanger's list, but this list is not correct.   Nothing to see here, move along.

After looking through this tutorial one day I realized how messy and confusing it was. So I completely re-did it. So now (I hope) it is a lot easier to follow. The only thing missing is the new download. This includes just the port, plus an Installer which works a lot easier for installing the game. I am uploading the new version to media fire now. (just got an account)
I would appreciate it if the old download hosted here could get deleted, and the new one, uploaded here.

No it's the other way around. But now that Gamespy is gone the multiplayer is only good for LAN on the port.

But it works like a charm for singleplayer and it works on the latest Mac OS.

I see. GameRanger seems to still be working. If they can switch this around so pc users can play on the mac version, we can get some online games going again.

Feels good to be back, I haven't been to these forums in over..  I dunno.. At least a couple of years..! Anyways..

Thanks for the tutorial! Although neither the video or text-tutorial seems to work for me, and I think somehow the problem is with my disc.

You see, when you double-click your disc you find a lot of files, but when I double-click my disc I start the installer. This is how it looks to me compared to you.

You have to have a PC COPY of the game for this to work, not the Mac version.

I think this kind of belongs in this topic...
I have a friend who wishes to come back to SWBF and play.  The problem is, he has a Mac now I believe.
In theory, couldn't you run the WINE wrapper program in a Mac and, with some tinkering maybe, use PC version of Gameranger to play the PC version of SWBF?  I have seen forums that say that Tunngle either doesn't work or is very buggy when it comes to WINE.  No native Mac port in sight for a long time.
Thanks!

Right, he can play, but not on tunngle. There are some other VPN programs that might work for him though, but he would need to find someone to play MP with.

The other option is to go native MAC and use GameRanger, and look for a Mac game, but that is for an old OS version.

Well, he would like to play with us again, that's why I suggested the PC version.  The only way I know of currently for PCs to play with Mac versions online was DC, which is dead.  I'm not sure of any other program that would go cross platform with Star Wars Battlefront other than Gameranger (which doesn't work right for SWBF).

So, I was hoping with the Windows version of Gameranger, and a Windows version of SWBF, he could just run both programs in Wine to play with Windows gamers.

This may not be the place to ask this, but can't he just use BootCamp on his Mac? Or does BootCamp itself have limitations on a Mac?

BootCamp requires a Windows installation, which I am under the impression he doesn't have.  Otherwise everything would work just fine.

I'm logged into GR at the moment, and it appears there are atleast 3 or 4 open servers. Whether or not the players are "intelligent" or "skilled" is still up for debate.

We would be trying to host a server rather than use the ones that may be up.  Basically, it's a long shot to get a Windows game to play on a Mac and be able to play online using the Windows GR.

The only way for the native Mac version of SWBF and PC players to play together is through LAN. DC did work but alas...

Your friend can run any version of Mac OS X and use the port mentioned in the first post. However the only way to play multiplayer is through LAN. DC only works for the port if someone has some sort of server. Led and I got it to work once I think.

So just go over to your friends house and bring your computer (or vice versa) and play via LAN. It's the best way to play since you can talk to each other in.....REAL LIFE! Da du du.
;)

Hope that helped!

That would be great.  Except he's in England.  I'm in America.  Hence the usage of VLAN.
But, how did you get it to work over LAN with VLAN?  Direct Connect days are done without a master server working, and VLAN programs are usually tailored towards Windows with the exception of GR which doesn't support cross-platform even though it says it does.

This time around it worked properly.

Hi!

I reinstalled SWBF today (I'm on a mac 10.5.8 using a mac copy of SWBF) and I can play the game no problem single player but when I try to host a game on Gameranger I get a "bad cd key" prompt and cannot play.

This is an old issue that the creator of gameranger fixed but clearly I'm having issues again and don't know how to fix it. Can anyone offer some solid advice? Following Kit Fisto's video seems unnecessary since I have a Mac disk.

Hey guys,
I luckily was able to purchase swbf again, its the pc version. Then I came across your nice guide but I´ve got a problem with the installapp: everything works fine until I have to type in my game key. In the window where my serialnumber is required Im not able to type anything, neither with the physic keyboard nor the virtual keyboard.

I use a macbook from mid 2010, 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
2GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)

I hope you can help me asap.

I have never heard of that problem before. Are you using Wine? You can always install on a friends PC and transfer the files to your Mac...

Okay in the meanwhile it worked one time that i could type my serial key in but after that the installation app keeps crashing somehow. Then I tried to install it with wine and it seemed to work but every time I had to change the cd it only went on when I choosed volume D:. I think this installation was successful but after I had clicked "play" in the launch menu it told me that I have to put in disc one what I already had because it was asked for at the final part of the installation.
With No-CD fixed exe it doesnt work either. The game is starting but before I get to the main menu or something before my whole macbook freezes.
Now Im really confused.
Could you explain what you mean by transfer it? I also own a windows 7 laptop but the game wont start on it, but installation works, so am I able to transfer the Data from the windows laptop to my mac?

Thank you for your help!

For some reason, I can't physically open Wine, I have to run a .exe and wait for it to load, but still just Wine and Window at the top. Now when I tried to update Wine, I can't delete the older Wine because it says its already opened (It's not)

Update: I was able to get the Wine File Manager open but I can't put the GameData into the ported SWBF App.
Hey, I'd install it on a friends computer (that's what I have to do now) and transferring the files you need.
That or borrow someones external CD drive.
I don't recommend pirating the game in any way.

It's not pirating if you already install it.and the CD's just there so that the game wouldn't be pirated anyway.I anyways want to preserve my CD (you know, for the future...).is it legal to get a no-CD Patch/Crack?The game is pretty old.

The first part is what Kit already said--install it and move it over.

However, the strict answer to your question is "No".  But you can look for one, just not post the information on this website.
